Tactile measurement.Highly accurate metrology with robust scanning systems

The tactile method enables accurate measurements, both for intermediate inspection and 100% inspection in the production process.

The complex scanning systems of these measure-ment instruments and machines measure surface characteristics, contour, form, position and dimen-sional tolerances of each work piece. Different scanning systems can be used depending on the measuring task, work pice geometry, and access

to the measurement location. For example, probes with perfectly machined diamond styluses for roughness measurements, ruby balls for form mea-surements, or wear-resistant, dirt-repellant carbide measuring probes for dimensional measurements.

nHow to measure precision shafts to sub-micron accuracies in sec-onds?High-precision non-contact optical shaft metrology is an invest-ment which can pay off both in the SPC measuring stations oper-ated by the workers and in the fully automatic systems for 100% inspection.

The hardware and software for these systems are optimized for use in a production environment and provide gauging component capability with maximum reliability over long periods of time. The non-tactile, optical sensor system operates totally without wear and without the danger of collision. Ideal for worker self-inspection, the systems are supported by intelligent and user-friendly man-machine interfaces.

The characteristic high reliability and precision of these measuring systems is particularly beneficial to the aerospace industry. Examples of existing applications are carrier shafts for aircraft engines and drive parts in helicopters, including a measuring system for rotary parts with diameters up to 30mm and lengths up to 200mm. In other applications, these shaft measuring systems have a measuring capacity for diameters up to 480mm and lengths up to 2500mm.

The nearly universal application for shaft-type work-pieces, offers maximum flexibility, and the potential to replace a number of con-ventional gauging components. Dimensions such as lengths/distances can be measured as can geometry elements (angles, radii,, etc.) and form and position tolerances (roundness, run-out) in a single pass.

Combining these evaluations into a single measuring program, the operator can generate relevant information for quality assurance during the production process with one measurement from one measuring system. This is a big advantage, for example, compared to a situation where conventional measuring machines would have to be reset and where large numbers of measurements exist. Flexible work-holding devices with Morse tapers enable quick loading of new work pieces with negligible set-up times.

Offering long term gauging capability with accuracies in the um-range in very short cycle times, measurement results are available within a few seconds. With conventional measuring systems, complete measurement of work pieces often last several minutes.

Measuring PrincipleThe workpiece is automatically scanned opto-electronically using the silhouette principle. The complete workpiece contour can be evaluated quickly and precisely by the high measuring resolution per single measured value. The outside contour data of each work-piece is recorded during the rotational movement. Any standard measurement functions can be combined depending on the measur-ing program which then follow an optimized, automatic measuring run.

Simple to useUser control of the measuring systems is simple. Measuring programs can be created within minutes. The creation of part measur-ing programs, display of, and further processing of the measurement results takes place simply and intuitively by means of a graphi-cal user interface (GUY ) in Windows XP. Depending on the measurement task, the worker can very quickly combine any standard measuring functions in one automatically optimized measuring run.

To create a new test program, the measuring system is loaded with a work piece, which is then scanned completely and saved in the program memory. This only lasts a few seconds. New added test characteristics can be selected by clicking with the cursor. This capa-bility also guarantees future value for a wide range of applications, and the high measuring speed ensures very high productivity.

The calibration states of these measuring systems are monitored automatically by integrated, high-precision step discs and tempera-ture sensors, which also form the basis for intelligent temperature compensation. Integrated step replace an additional setting master for daily use. The active temperature compensation takes play automatically with every measuring run. The measuring system moni-tors itself for negative ambient influences. This offers high safety and optimum comfort in production applications.

These systems offer a wide variety of flexibility for automatic or manual self inspection, and are proving their reliability at various manufacturing sites around the world.
