Numbers 11:24-30

24 So Moses went out and told the people the words of the Lord; and he gathered seventy elders of the people, and placed them all around the tent. 25 Then the Lord came down in the cloud and spoke to him, and took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders; and when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do so again. 26 Two men remained in the camp, one named Eldad, and the other named Medad, and the spirit rested on them; they were among those registered, but they had not gone out to the tent, and so they prophesied in the camp. 27 And a young man ran and told Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28 And Joshua son of Nun, the assistant of Moses, one of his chosen men, said, “My lord Moses, stop them!” 29 But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? Would that all the Lord’s people were prophets, and that the Lord would put his spirit on them!” 30 And Moses and the elders of Israel returned to the camp. NRSV

John 7:37-39 37 Now on the last day of the feast, the great day, Jesus stood and proclaimed, “If anyone thirsts, let them come to me and drink. 38 Those who believe, as the Scripture says, out of him shall flow rivers of living water.” 39 Now he was referring to the Spirit, which those who believe in him were about to receive; for as yet the Spirit had not been given because Jesus was not yet glorified. Leigh Congregation

UPDATE: LADIES HIGH TEA

WOMEN'S CONFERENCE SPONSPORSHIPS We are happy to announce that Rebecca (Leigh Memorial),Ofa (Leigh Fijian) & Belinda (Wesley Lodge/ Westmead) have accepted their nominations to be our young adult reps at the Uniting Women's conference in September. Well done to all of these wonderful young women!

SUNDAY SCHOOL @ LEIGH

Today, we are having our 'mini heritage walking excursion' plus morning tea at a local café! Our walk will include stops at the Vestry Museum, the Lawry Chapel Memorial & St. John's Church. Parents/ caregivers are invited to join us.

HERITAGE SUNDAY Church services will be held at both Leigh Memorial & Westmead on Sunday 22 June. NB: Morning teas at both locations will follow the services. Heritage Snippet 6: Did you know...that Leigh Memorial Church has six, 129 year old sandstone 'gargoyles' perched firmly on its now empty steeple parapet? Look up and you'll see these very strange, protective creatures which were typically used in 'Victorian Gothic Revival' architecture. The word "gargoyle" comes from the Latin gurgula or 'throat', ie. most gargoyles have 3rainwater pipes inside their throats, which funnel moisture away from rooves and buildings.

LEIGH CONGREGATION - PLEASE NOTE:

Sunday morning, 29 June,

will be Keith's final service as our Leigh Memorial Minister, so we're planning a very special time of sharing, remembering,

celebrating and saying thanks - followed by morning tea. Further details to follow.

Westmead Congregation Adult Fellowship at Westmead enjoyed a most interesting afternoon on Tuesday, when Rillis Davies from the Bible Society came to tell us the latest news on what the Bible Society is doing in many places around the world. China was the feature country this year and we were all ''on the edge of our seats" listening to the amazing work going on there. Most bibles are printed in China with the encouragement and support of the Chinese Government. Fund raising is needed to provide the paper for the printing . Afternoon tea followed the Chinese theme and was a feast. This is a big week for our university students, with many assignments being prepared and very little sleep. Best wishes to you all. Especially thinking of Rev. Veitinia, Rev. Keith, Faith.

Good to know that Nancy is recovering well after her operation and hopefully may be home soon.

Flora is mending after another fall. That has to be it now Flora!

Our dear friend Satik has now moved to Lillian Wells nursing home. We will keep her in our prayers.

May has been quite unwell, and is looking forward to getting her strength back. We all look forward to seeing you buzzing around May, but take it slowly.

Baby Eleanor is progressing well.

Karen's father is very ill in Orange hospital at present. We are thinking of you and the family Karen.

Lovely to have the entire Tindall family in church last Sunday - Martin, Alice and girls. Martin was able to bring the congregation up to date with his work in Tonga, recruiting and training workers from Tonga to come to Australia to do fruit picking work on participating farms in Queensland.

Adult Fellowship members were "on the edge of their seats" listening to news of the Bible Society in China.

Many thanks from Jen and Jai. Jen and Jai who stayed at Wesley Apartments for 14 months while their daughter received treatment for Leukaemia, wish to thank Parramatta Mission for all the support shown to them during their stay. Jen and Jai have donated clothes, toys and two prams for us to give to those who need it the most. What non perishable food they had was donated to Meals Plus. Jen and Jai especially wish to thank Belinda and Dianne for the little extras that would just appear at the right time (these extras included Coles and fuel vouchers and were taken from the Hospitality account). They also wish to thank Trish and the Westmead congregation for the Welcome Pack and meal packs and the general support that was given during their stay. Sadly their precious daughter Indie lost her battle with leukaemia in May. Belinda and Trish farewelled Jen and Jai from the apartments and they left looking towards a brighter future. They would like to return to Westmead one day to visit the apartments hopefully with a new baby.

PARRAMATTA MISSION COMMUNITY CARE NETWORK BOARD The Community Care Board has determined that the minutes of their meetings may be made available to any interested congregation members. The only exception would be matters of a sensitive or confidential nature. A copy of the May Board minutes is available by contacting Robert key on 9624 1797 or [email protected]

Time Out Café is progressing nicely. A most rewarding activity for the volunteers who participate each Tuesday and Thursday. Visitors to the Café are finding it a peaceful and pleasant place to rest a while. If you are in the area at these times, please come and say hello.

Reflections

There are many theories used to analyse an organisation. Two include agency theory and stewardship theory. Agency is the arrangement in which one or more people engage other people (the agent) to perform a service on their behalf, and may delegate some decision making authority to the agent. Agency is a transaction. The theory can help to explain the use of power to criticise and complain because our agent in our opinion is not doing what we want. Agency speaks of our staff, our minister our clients in the possessive sense rather than as a collective working together. Agency theory contrasts with stewardship theory. Stewardship has its genesis in Judean/Christian thinking. Stewardship is understood as we have been given care of the creation for and with God. Stewardship theory is about transformation, inclusion, human dignity.

Agency theory says we get a minister to do a job for us, the ministry agent. We get staff to do a job for us. Stewardship theory says we call a minister, employ staff and engage volunteers to work in mutual partnership, working together to achieve the goals. Instead of employing agents to do our work at arm’s length, we have inclusion. Motivation is primarily intrinsic in stewardship, rather than extrinsic in a transaction. Stewardship is looking after the resources of social, economic and environment. Stewardship recognises that all of us, whether congregation members, staff or volunteers, are here for a time during which we steward the resources and ensure they are well cared for those who follow when we are no longer here.

Congregations often operate out of an agency strategy even while espousing stewardship. They can be operating as transactional even while espousing transformation, be exclusive even while naming inclusion and dignity as core values. The language and the treatment of other members, ministers, or congregation leaders and church councillors, staff and volunteers can betray the real motivations and unstated foundational world view.

Stewardship is where our relationships are not transactions but partnerships in which each contribute to the whole with mutual accountability. Stewardship leads to building community. Of course there is always an element in relationships that are both transactional and transformational, agency and stewardship, the issues is which one is predominant? Where there is inclusive language, reciprocity, mutuality, partnership, and when controlling behaviour is low, stewardship is in the ascendency.

Pentecost, which is today, celebrates the Spirit of God upon all people in a mutual way in which all are called to live and work together in the stewardship of God’s good creation.

Blessings, Keith Hamilton
