By ONT [email protected]
On Wed Feb 20th,2013, a forum was held at OLG at which congressional candidates Larry
Pickens, Robin Kelly, Joyce Washington, Debbie Halvorson, Anthony Beale, John Blyth, Victor Jonathan, Clifford Eagleton and Leland Jones fielded questions from community members. Each question was presented by an
individual local resident who gave a testimonial stressing the personal importance of the issue at hand. The candidates were given a minute to respond to each topic raised. Candidates gave some issues in-depth responses, while others
gave short replies, and some topic questions were dodged all together by some candidates. What follows is a chart which summarizes candidate responses for those who could not make the event.

IT’S a COYOTE!The city of Chicago and
local areas, including Wolf Lake and Eggers Grove, have
seen an increase in coyote sightings. They look like pet
dogs but, are in fact, wild animals and should not be
approached.Coyotes are always on
the lookout for food and commonly feed on mice,
rabbits and birds. They have also been known to prey on
small dogs and are commonly attracted to bird feeders and pet food that is left outside.should one come in contact,
do not run. Yell, stand up straight and wave around.
Look larger and louder than appearing to be.

Lions Bridging the GapBy Christa [email protected]
On Tuesday, February 5, 2103, representatives of the Girl Scouts, Boy scouts and Cub scouts of the East side were invited to attend a meeting of the East Side Lions and present their achievements of the past year. The Lions members heard first hand of the scouts good deeds
in the neighborhood that included coats, mittens, and toy drives, serving as color guards, raising money for the American Cancer Society, along with cleaning up the neighborhood. The scouts displayed woodworking projects they made and showed off the numerous patches they have earned for all of their hard work. The East Side Lions presented each group with a donation the scouts can use to continue their
efforts in the neighborhood.
The East side Lions also took the time to explain to the youth the service the Lions members have provided to the community, including those who are blind and those with disabilities. The Lions host many fundraisers so that they can provide winter coats to area children, sponsor ill children at a summer camp, and provide wheelchairs to
those in need. Currently they are sponsoring a poster contest for area 6, 7, and 8th graders for drug awareness.
Next up for the Lions is there annual Pancake Breakfast held on Sunday, May 5, 2013 from 8:00am-1:00pm at the St.Francis Desales Parish Bingo Hall 10201 s. Ewing Ave. Chicago, IL

Former pro basketball player acquired to grow athletic program, enrollment and
visibility.
st. Francis de sales High school announced today that Greg M o d z e l e w s k i has been named the school’s new athletic director as part of the school’s c o n t i n u i n g strategy to take the athletic program -
and the school’s overall advancement efforts - to the next level. A Chic ago native and graduate of Loyola Academy, Modzelewski played basketball at North Park university and Plymouth state University while pursuing a degree in business. Recently, after a career that encompassed more than two decades of international experience as a professional basketball player, coach, and team owner, Greg returned to the Chicago area with a primary focus of making a difference in the community and having a positive impact on people’s lives. “Having worked with numerous schools and athletics programs abroad, Greg brings a number of core competencies and a level of enthusiasm
that is essential to the growth of our athletic program,” said Ray Nedohon, the school’s president. “Greg has made a career out of successfully reconstructing organizations within the performance sports segment, most often from the ground up. His background and passion are just what the Pioneers need right now.” Now entering his second year as school president, Ray Nedohon indicated that bringing Modzelewski on board was the latest in a series of initiatives to bolster the school’s enrollment and brand recognition within the community. In July, Nedohon hired Rodney Lopez to serve as the school’s Advancement Director, and in the past year, private support for the school has grown significantly. With current enrollment at approximately 200, the school expects a strong showing at the 2013 High school Entrance Exam on January 12th and its first enrollment increase in a number of years as early as this January. 10th Ward Alderman John Pope echoed his support for the school’s current progress and the latest addition to its administrative team. “I am pleased with the efforts the leadership at st. Francis de sales High school continues to demonstrate as it elevates this community anchor,” said Alderman Pope. “The addition of Mr. Greg Modzelewski to lead the athletic program speaks volumes about the school’s commitment to excellence. Greg’s successful
career both on and off the court will serve as an invaluable asset for the school and the entire community.” Most recently, Modzelewski was recruited to rebuild an underperforming basketball program at the University of Northumbria in Newcastle, England. There, he was responsible for identifying key areas for improvement and implementing comprehensive change strategies. As a result, the basketball team was promoted in its first season and advanced to the playoff finals over the next four consecutive seasons. Often seeded an underdog, the team successfully won the “Playoff Championships” twice and the “Cup” once. Becoming known as “the playoff specialist,” Greg attracted late-developing student-athletes and doubled the number of teams in intermural competitions. More importantly, in pursuit of their academic, personal, and athletic goals, more than 90% of the student-athletes graduated, and with his continuous mentoring have successfully positioned themselves in high level professional careers. As a result, his strategy was replicated across the university’s other sports programs. Modzelewski’s approach to sports management includes a community-based marketing strategy, devised to attract participation, sponsorship, and diverse audience support. While representing Great Britain Basketball and playing professionally
for the Newcastle Eagles in the 1990’s, in his spare time, Modzelewski designed and delivered marketing strategies and community outreach programs that generated interest from public and private investment through sponsorships and partnerships. He laid the foundation for the most successful basketball team and professional club in the United Kingdom over the past decade and his community outreach initiative evolved into a nationally recognized program that is presently being rolled out across the country. Coming to st. Francis de sales was a perfect fit for Modzelewski given the school’s exciting new trajectory and his personal and professional interests. “I was honored to be offered the opportunity to take over the athletic program and join the St. Francis de Sales family,” he commented. “I remember the school’s athletic reputation from my own high school days, and recent discussions with the administration about the school’s new vision made it an easy decision. All of the elements of a solid program are there, and the school is really heading in a positive direction. As I build out the program infrastructure, I look forward to interacting and collaborating with all of the school’s stakeholders, including student-athletes, coaches, faculty, staff, alumni and the entire community.”
