it’S a Coyote!The city of Chicago and

local areas, including Wolf lake and eggers Grove, have

seen an increase in coyote sightings. They look like pet

dogs but, are in fact, wild animals and should not be

approached.Coyotes are always on

the lookout for food and commonly feed on mice,

rabbits and birds. They have also been known to prey on

small dogs and are commonly attracted to bird feeders and pet food that is left outside.should one come in contact,

do not run. Yell, stand up straight and wave around.

With the special election for the 2nd congressional district seat nearing, Our Neighborhood Times presents background information on the following candidates: Anthony Beale, Debbie Halvorson, Robin Kelly and ernest B. Fenton.

ANTHONY BEALE Anthony Beale began his political career back in 1999,

b e c o m i n g the youngest member of the Chicago City Council by taking office as alderman of the 9th ward. He has held

the position ever since, winning re-election campaigns in 2003 and again in 2007. Beale sits on several committees and chairs the Council’s Police and Fire Committee. Beale is a member of the Rosemoor Community Association and maintains strong ties to the city’s Roseland neighborhood. Alderman Beale boasts that his job position involves an 80 hour per week workload, but spends his free time volunteering as a baseball coach for both Gwendolyn Brooks High school and the Roseland little league. Prior to his role as Alderman, Beale attended Blackburn College for one year before working as an IT technician for Allstate Insurance. The key issues his campaign platform has

been running on are public safety and job creation.

TOI HUTCHINSON Toi Hutchinson currently serves in the Illinois state senate

and has done so since 2008. Prior to that, she served as Chief of staff for state senator Debbie H a l v o r s o n , whom she succeeded.

Hutchinson serves on a multitude of legislative committees including ones which focus on labor issues, agriculture and transportation. Hutchinson had previously served as City Clerk for Olympia Fields Village and taught high

school english courses. Hutchinson received a Bachelor in english from the university of Illinois at urbana-Champaign.

DEBBIE HALVORSON Debbie Halvorson is perhaps the most experienced

c a n d i d a t e r u n n i n g for the 2nd congressional district seat. she served in the Illinois state senate from 1997-2009. In 2009,

Halvorson won election into the u.s. House of Representatives, where she served until 2011. Halvorson filed for candidacy

“Taylor School Goes Healthy!”

by angela Romero & edwin Salas(Two Taylor School Students)

Crunch! Crunch! Carrots are delicious! Taylor school’s brand new salad bar has just opened on Thursday, January 24th. It is a great way for the students of Taylor school to be healthy and fit; they also have more food choices. Kids all over the school took action trying the salad bar, they absolutely loved it! even teachers went into the cafeteria to pick up some salad.

We went around the cafeteria asking students what they thought about the salad bar. One of the students, Diego Robles from third grade answered, “I don’t like it, i loVe it! I love the lettuce and broccoli.” Isn’t it amazing?! When have you heard kids saying

that they love broccoli and other vegetables? little kids are actually learning that eating healthy is important. Another student, Beatriz lopez, from eighth grade answered “I think it’s good for us because it helps us to be healthy everyday”. Beatriz is a great example and role model to little kids that look up to her. Another eighth grader, Priscilla Del Real, answered “I think that more people are starting to eat healthy because of the salad bar, and I really like it.” This salad bar can set up a lifelong habit of healthy eating for the students in Taylor school. This is our goal for the salad bar, instead of kids grabbing bags of potato chips, chocolate, and other junk food they can reach for fruits and vegetables. We really think this can happen, because of the results that we had on the first day of our salad bar were outstanding!!!

4th District Senior Citizens meet to

help protectby Christa [email protected]

The 4th District Senior Citizen Advisory Council often gather together to inform the community on how to keep the neighborhood safe. One of their last meetings included a guest speaker from the Metropolitan Water Reclamation of Greater Chicago. Commissioner, Debra shore, spoke about properly disposing of unwanted or unused pharmaceuticals. Proper disposal of these items will keep them out of neighboring rivers and streams that many animals use for their livelihood as well as drinking water for household use.should any unwanted or unused medications and over the counter medicines need to be disposed of, the 10th Ward’s closest location would be the Area 2 Police Department at 727 e 111th street. To attend the next 4th District Senior Citizen Advisory Council, who meet at the 4th District CAPS Office on 2255 E 103rd Street, call the office at 312.747.1708.

The boys were amazing within the last three months as most never competed competitively or even swam. senior Captain, Victor Torres, has led his team this year to 7-3 as opposed to last year where they went 6-2. The coaching staff had their work cut out for them this year but did an awesome job led by Head Coach Andronik

Ganczenski (varsity), Coach Marisol Cholwick and JV Coach Rachel Yzeguirre. “[We] had a wonderful coaching staff this year and without them I don’t think we would have done as well as we did with both of our swim teams (girls and boys) cant wait til next year,” said coach Andronik. The Varsity team includes Captain Victor Torres, Co-Captain Henry (Hank) Smith, Marcos Marquez, Juan Montes, Andres sosa Bandon Chaves and Robert Jeronimo. At Ridgeway Chevrolet, we want good things to happen to good people. We are hosting a credit re-establishment event starting this week at Ridgeway Chevrolet. Individuals who are in need of a vehicle but have not

been able to secure fi nancing will have a new avenue to obtain fi nancial stability. If anyone needs help rebuilding their credit, this is their opportunity to purchase a vehicle and improve their credit all at the same time.

We are a local, family-owned Chevrolet dealership that has been serving Chicagoland and Northwest Indiana since 1927. Our customers are extremely valuable to us and we want to make sure

that they are well taken care of. For our credit re-establishment event, we have

teamed up with 19 banks and lending institutions that are able to work with our customers and help them achieve their fi nancial goals. Our reputation as an excellent and trustworthy dealership has helped us to maintain strong relationships with these lending institutions. Banks today are scrambling to fulfi ll quotas that were not met due to the economy. This is an excellent time to apply for a loan; if you were denied in the past, things will be different today!
