Preparation for Worship
A Labor Day Prayer
Gracious God of all who love and labor, thank
you for endowing us with the ability to work,
to create, and to contribute ideas that benefit
the world. We remember in grateful prayer
today all those who labor earnestly in fields
and factories, in hospitals and hospitality, in
mining or maintenance, in transportation, in
communications, in construction. We thank
you for those who bear the heat of the day, for
those who sow and hoe and grow and mow.
We pray the blessing of Ecclesiastes 3:13 upon each worker, “That everyone may eat
and drink, and find satisfaction in all their toil−this is the gift of God.” Keep our
workers healthy, safe, and strong. Grant them work environments that allow them
to do their jobs in safety, where they are respected and valued by their superiors, and
where they are rewarded by a sense of accomplishment, and a fair and living wage.
Deliver us from seeking bargains for which others bear an unfair cost. Help us to en-
vision the unseen hands that bring groceries to our shelves and conveniences to our
lives. Grant us grateful remembrance of those who shoulder tasks that we would
shun. Let us never overlook them or underestimate their value.
For all who labor, hear our prayer, O Lord. Amen

Call to Worship
Leader: Hear the words of Jesus:
“I am the bread of life.
Whoever comes to me will never be hungry,
and whoever believes in me will never be thirsty.” (John 6:35)
Let us pray together.
Unison: God of every good gift:
We come to worship today seeking many things.
Some of us are seeking peace,
some are seeking healing,
some are seeking answers,
and others are looking for the right questions.
We trust you, that you will give us what we need:
food for our deepest hunger. Amen.
Hymn #410 God Is Calling through the Whisper
Prayer of Confession
Holy God, we open our hearts to you this day,
and offer the truth of our lives:
The fears that stifle us,
The prejudices that blind us,
The ignorance that hobbles us,
The doubt that plagues us.
Help us, we pray, so that we will
Find courage in unlikely places,
See the world with new and gracious eyes,
Move to those places where love is needed,
Have faith that you are with us.
This we pray in Jesus‟ name. Amen.
Assurance of Forgiveness
Leader: The good news is that Christ calls us to new life and enables us to begin
again and again and again and again. Friends, believe the good news of
the Gospel. In Jesus Christ we are forgiven!
Unison: Thanks be to God!

about the Teen Volunteer Program and adult volunteer opportunities.
Summer Lunch Bunch Thanks You. From Kathleen Ambroso, the Lunch Bunch
Program director, “Thank you to all those from Grace who helped with Summer
Lunch Bunch! We served 5,154 meals (and that‟s not even counting any “seconds” we
gave out)! You truly were a blessing to our community!” Thank you to Pastor Susan
for finding and coordinating this opportunity to serve the community.

Sign Up for Blood Drive. Please sign up outside the Library to indicate you are
willing to donate blood. When we have 50 signups, the Red Cross will give us a firm
date and time in November when the mobile unit will set up in Wester Hall.
Tutors Needed for Neighborhood Elementary Students. By tutoring a neighbor-
hood student, you help a child gain confidence and skills needed to thrive academi-
cally and socially. Our Tutoring Program is held at Grace on Mondays from 7-8:00
p.m., October 15 through May 20. Tutors work one-on-one with the same student
throughout the year. Subs are available if you have to miss a week. Interested? Call
JoAnn Holmes (703-644-0963) or Tammy Juba (703-644-2461).
Finance Update. As of the end of June, our Offerings from Members have fallen
below budget projections. If you are behind in your planned giving or had intended to
wait until later in the year, please consider our current financial situation. Thanks.
