Educating Under God’s Word for Serving God in His World The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge. Proverbs 1:7
My nephew and nieces invited me to join them in filling out a National Hockey League Stanley Cup Bracket Challenge a few days before the NHL playoffs began on April 11. It’s similar to the NCAA b-ball tournament bracket…but with only 16 teams included…and it’s about hockey…and something that the Minderhoud Canadians get really excited about. Without much effort, I convinced my boys to fill one out too in order to compete with the rest of the clan. So, there we sat in the kitchen agonizing over which team will defeat which team, checking stats, guessing how many games each series will last, and how many goals will be scored in the finals. When we thought we were finished, we weren’t. We second guessed ourselves and proceeded to make more modifications. We wrestled with this for a while which was actually quite silly because it’s just hockey that ultimately has no major impact to our lives. But decisions about the future really can be agonizing - particularly if they are of great impact to your life. What high school do I attend next year? How will that decision impact the future?

How will I fit in? What are we going to do about the CSI pension problems? How will that impact retirement? How will it impact the SCS budget and tuition? What if this doesn’t turn out as I had hoped? Is this what God has planned for me to do? An article I read recently spoke to the issue of desiring certain outcomes that we want to see in our life. What if those desires don’t materialize? How do I handle that disappointment? The author came to the realization that sometimes our predicted plans don’t materialize because God loves us enough to turn down our requests. Sometimes it would have been most unfortunate for us if the Lord had granted that request and, in His infinite wisdom, He knew that this would not be the right thing for us. He continues by saying that we don’t always understand God’s plans but we should be thankful that God does what is best for us whether it contradicts our wishes or not. We need to understand that even a reasonably good parent says “no” to a child’s demands sometimes and God is far more than just a reasonably good parent.
The reality of life is that we can come to expect confusing and disappointing experiences to occur during our lifetimes. We thought that we had things all figured out and lined up only to find out that we didn’t. The author encouraged us to welcome these times as opportunities to grow in our faith as difficult as that might actually be. Hold fast to that faith because to think that God has betrayed our best interests is one of Satan’s most effective tools against us. Press on. Remember to praise God in these times as did David. “Yours is the greatness, power, glory, victory, majesty, and the kingdom, O Lord, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you and you rule over all. And now we thank you, our God, and praise your glorious name” (1 Chronicles 29:11-13). “God Makes Sense Even When He Doesn’t Make Sense, Part 4”. Dr. James Dobson

Classroom Spotlight: Mr. De Groot
“It always goes to those who don’t deserve / it’s the opposite of how you feel / when the pain they caused is just too real / Takes everything you have to say the word / Forgiveness.” These lines in the first verse of our theme song for the month, “Forgiveness” by Matthew West, sum up the main theme for the Parable of Unmerciful Servant in Matthew 18:21-35. Jesus has just finished explaining how important it is to have humility in the church. Jesus has just finished explaining how to (humbly) deal with sin in the church. Then Peter, bold as always, stands up and asks, “Lord, how many times shall I forgive
my brother or sister who sins against me? Up to seven times?” (v. 21). Jesus answers with a parable of a man who has been forgiven an unimaginable amount, but who refuses to forgive a sizable (though much smaller) debt owed to him. The man is punished for his unforgiving spirit and his canceled debt is called back in. Jesus then ends with an astounding quote, “This is how my heavenly
Father will treat each of you unless you forgive your brother or sister from your heart.”
Forgiveness isn’t just a good option for the believer; it is one of the very fruits by which we are assured of our salvation.
We have been spending the month exploring this theme in devotions and doing some soul searching. Are we a forgiving people? We are called to be. And yet, it is so easy to hold onto something that someone else did to hurt us or wrong us. A word that has come up almost every month in Jr. High devotions is “Perspective.” That word continues to hold importance this month as we realize that the correct perspective allows us to see that because we have been forgiven an unimaginable amount, we can forgive even great offenses.
7th Grade News… In 7th grade, the most
exciting learning tool that we have been engage this year is a whole lab of new computers. The 7th grade students have latched on to the new technology and never cease to amaze me with how quickly they become adept users of new applications and media. We have also been digging into the themes and technique in J.R.R. Tolkien’s classic Fantasy Novel The Hobbit in Literature class, and we just finished an intense unit on writing formal research papers in 7th grade English. The 7th graders tend to throw themselves into any topic at hand which is always exciting to watch as they create and discover in all their classes.

Building Debt Update We continue to keep in front of the society the financial end of this expansion. The numbers below we feel are all key as we work together to complete the last piece of this monumental task, which is paying for it. The total spent on the building is $3,335,935. Our intention throughout the project has also been to contribute $200,000 to the Foundation which brings the total amount needed to $3,535,935 (not including future interest accruals). Our unpaid balance is currently funded by debentures issued to society members, and some internally borrowed funds. We are very thankful for the financial support received at this point in the project, and we are very grateful that approximately half of the total is already paid for as we begin using the new building. We ask that you continue to watch these numbers as we report them monthly, and prayerfully consider opportunities to continue to help us reduce the debt and complete this project. Your annual pledges that are still coming in will be going towards paying off the debentures now that the bank loan has been paid off. As this happens, you might not see a lot of movement in the numbers below, because the debentures we are paying come in differing amounts. Some are $20,000, some are $25,000, and other various amounts too. We will be compiling your pledge fulfillments or extra gifts in order to pay off those debentures. So please keep on fulfilling those pledges even if you don’t see the numbers below change often. Once we pay off a debenture or two, you will see larger drops in the data.
Project Total: $3,535,935
% of Financial Contributions Received by Pledge and Actual Funds: 73.23% (was 73.19%)
Total Funds Borrowed: $1,053,000 (the same as last month) – through debentures, internal borrowing
$Daily Interest: $64.66 (the same as last month)
We are super excited to announce that the bank loan has already been paid off!! We are now prepared to
start paying back debentures!! Thank you VERY MUCH for your faithful fulfillment of your pledges!! We ask that
you continue in fulfilling your pledges so that we can start paying off the debentures that were generously given
to the school to use.
Please remember:
If you have made a past pledge, we continue to request your faithful fulfillment of that pledge so that we
can begin to reduce the amount that has been borrowed and thereby reduce the amount of interest
being paid.
Perhaps you have not yet made a contribution or a pledge towards this project. If not, we’d be glad to
speak with you about partnering in this endeavor. Please contact one of the Board members listed on
the back of the School Bell, and we’ll set up a time to visit.
Perhaps you are interested in taking your original pledge and extending it for a few more years. If so,
please contact Mr. Paul Anema who is heading up our Capital Campaign Committee.
Another way to assist would be to send contributions to our Foundation. Is that something that you
would consider?
Thank you very much for your support and commitment to Christian Education in Sanborn, IA!!
Eighth Grade Science Fair
Thursday, April 19 is the date for the annual Science Fair. Every year this event is held in conjunction with the spring program and Grandparent’s Day. The eighth grade class has been diligently working on their projects for the last several months. This is an excellent opportunity for the students to explore areas of science that are in line with their interests. The students are busy researching, investigating, putting the finishing touches on their display boards, and journaling. The students wrote a short description of their project to share with you.
Lyndsey Moser - The title of my science fair project is pHysics is pHun. I am researching the pH level of water to determine which water is better for you. I am determining which waters are acidic, alkaline, and neutral. I am testing ten different waters: Smart Water, Dasani, Ice Mountain, Lifewater, Fiji, Deja Blue, Tap Water, Reverse Osmosis water, school’s water, and well water.
Extreme Lengths!! Riely Andringa and Levi Schreurs enjoy being in the outdoors, they also enjoy shooting guns so they decided to do both of those with their project. These boys were wondering if the length of a barrel on a rifle will affect how far it can accurately shoot. Come and see their results on April 19, 2018.
Shayla Van Beek - Slime TIme- For my Science Fair Project, I am testing the amounts of borax in slime and the effect it has on slime. My hypothesis is that more borax in the water will make the slime thicker and tougher because the borax molecules will attach the glue molecules more tightly. To test this I will be making five batches of slime: one with the standard amount of borax, two with less borax, and two with more borax.
Makenzie Iwema - My science fair project is about mouthwash. The project is called Mouth Matters. I am testing 5 different kinds of mouthwash to see which one kills the most germs. I am testing Listerine, Crest Scope, Crest Pro-Health, Oil Pulling, and Thieves Essential Oil in Water. Come to the program on April 19, 2018 to see the results, so you can take better care of your mouth and understand why.
Grace Hofman - My project is titled Hyper Grass. For my experiment, I grew grass and watered it with beer, sugar water, coffee, and tap water. The purpose of my investigation was to find out how different liquids would affect the growth of grass.
Much effort goes into these projects so please come and allow them to share their findings with you on April 19. What an amazing way to use their talents to praise and glorify God.
Interscholastics

Sanborn Christian is always looking for those who would be willing to become a substitute bus driver. Two things that tends to prevent interested parties from accomplishing this goal are: they do not know what it all entails and they are unsure of what the steps are needed in order to get the license. The following are the steps for hiring new school bus drivers:
Step 1 - Licensing – must have the CDL class A,B, or C with passenger (P) endorsement and school bus (S) endorsement Step 2 - Licensing – if driving a vehicle of 15 passengers or less, must have the Chauffer’s class D with the “3” endorsement (a CDL will also work, but class D3 is the minimum for 15 passenger or less vehicles) Step 3 - Must pass the DOT physical using a certified medical examiner found on the National Registry of Certified Medical Examiners. Step 4 - If the driver is an insulin dependent diabetic, the driver must have a waiver signed by the certified medical examiner. The waiver can be found here: Insulin Dependent Driver Waiver Step 5 – Must have a pre-employment drug screening Step 6 – Must pass the criminal background check process as outlined in Iowa Code 321.375 Step 7 - Must be added to your school’s driver authorization list with the authorization printed out for the driver to carry at all times when transporting students (authorizations must be updated sometime between July 1 and August 15 each subsequent year) Step 8 - Must complete the 17-hour “New Driver STOP Training” (14 hours online with 3 hours of face-to-face training)
o Register and pay for classes with your local community college o The 14 hours of online training will be complete upon passing the certification test o The certification test must be proctored by someone at the school district o New drivers receive a 6-month grace period during which they can drive while completing the training o Training can continue for up to 12 months, but after the initial 6 months drivers are no longer allowed to drive o Authorization expiration dates will be six months after initial hiring date o Upon completion of training, the authorization expiration date will be 8/15 of the upcoming year
Step 9 - Optional – may take the “3-Hour Annual In-service” (not required of new drivers during the first school year in which they were hired)
If you are interested, please contact either Jeff Van Beek, Jim Iwema, Anthony Minderhoud or any of the other school board members.

NICSTO Tax Credit (Northwest Iowa Christian School Tuition Organization)
Explanation for DONORS The state has recognized the need to support taxpayers who wish to support Christian education. Starting immediately, Iowa taxpayers can receive a tax credit up to 65% of their donation that supports families who need tuition assistance and deduct 100% of the gift on Federal Income Tax. How does it work?
1. You must owe Iowa state income tax. 2. You must make out a check to NICSTO (Northwest Iowa Christian School Tuition Organization)
and designate it to Sanborn Christian. 3. Complete the “Contribution Memo” and send it with the check to Sanborn Christian. 4. NICSTO will send you a letter of receipt for your Federal Tax information. 5. In early January, you will receive a tax credit certificate to attach to your Iowa tax form.
Your money will be used for families who qualify for NICSTO at Sanborn Christian School. Really? Yes! The NICSTO program has been around for years and has been a benefit to both the recipient (SCS) and the donor (you). This is a great tax benefit to those who will be paying taxes on their income. NO LIMIT on your contribution amount! When? All donated money will need to be sent to SCS by December 7, 2018. Please prayerfully consider donating to this fund! All donations are greatly appreciated! If you wish to donate, please fill out the donor sheet (included in the School Bell) and return it to SCS by December 7. Contact Anthony Minderhoud or one of the finance committee members (Jeff Van Beek, Jim Iwema or Chris Kuperus) if you have any questions. Thanks!
Example: If you contribute $1,000 to NICSTO, you will receive a 65% tax credit or $650 on your 2018 IA income tax. In addition, you may claim that $1,000 deduction on your federal income tax. If you are in the 25% tax bracket, you could benefit by $250. So in reality, $900 of you $1,000 gift will come back to you!!
Now is the time to make a contribution to NICSTO. Don’t wait until December to donate. If you wait too
long, our allotment will get filled up quickly once December comes.
