political, social and economic structure of the
Ranch Era through hands on activities. Our
dedicated docents lead students in making
tortillas, adobe bricks, cattle branding, bird
identification, animal and plant adaptations and

●How You Can Participate●
You can help preserve access to this treasured
site and protect the beauty and rural character
of the Nipomo community for years to come
by becoming a financial supporter, a DANA
Amigo and/or a volunteer. For some, a visit to
Rancho Nipomo is an opportunity to
experience what life was like in the mid-
1800’s. For others, it is the first time they have
ever taken notice of the natural environment
around them. DANA Amigos help afford these
experiences for our children and visitors of all
ages. Volunteers help make these experiences
come alive.
It was the exchange point for the first regular
mail route between San Diego and San
Francisco and a polling location during the
election that helped decide the issue of
California’s statehood. In 1857, it was a regular
stagecoach stop and by 1881, the Pacific
Coast Railway ran across the rancho. The
Dana family -- the Captain, his wife, Maria
Josefa Carrillo (of Santa Barbara) and the 13 of
their 21 children who survived to become
adults -- were known for their generous
hospitality. They shared food, lodging and
horses with weary travelers. Merchants
conducted business on the rancho, and friends
and neighbors gathered there for political and
social functions.
●Education Programs●
Rancho Nipomo hosts over 1200 school
children a year for our Cultural and Nature
Education programs. These programs offer
students the opportunity to explore their local
natural environment as well as experience
with all the senses, the past and discover the
●Welcome to our Rancho●
Rancho Nipomo Heritage Park is a 130-acre
historic park, museum and nature center
located on the Central Coast of California
near Old Town Nipomo, that offers its guests
all the rich, rustic ambience of old Mexican
California. At the center of the park is the
Dana Adobe, a 13-room historic home built in
1839 by Captain William (Guillermo) Dana on
one of the largest Mexican land grants in
the United States.
●The Story of the Rancho●
Captain Dana’s adobe home is the oldest
residence in San Luis Obispo County. It
was the only stopping point between Missions
San Luis Obispo and Santa Inez along the
historic El Camino Real, and the only house
between San Luis Obispo and Los Alamos on
the road to Santa Barbara. The Dana home
was the center of agriculture, politics and
commerce for those who lived and traveled
along the 100-mile stretch of territory nearby.
Rancho Nipomo hosts over 3,000
visitors annually for tours, educational
programs, weddings, concerts and
events that showcase the opulent multi
cultural history of our California. Over
1200 school children a year participate in
