Building Bridges of Understanding
Educate...Advocate...Engage...
The Atlanta ChapterFrom our Chapter President and Executive Director This year marked the start of the second century of the American Jewish Committee, and we are proud to be part of an organization that so effectively fosters democracy, pursues justice and uplifts Jewish people in Atlanta and throughout the world. Locally we continue to contribute to the national mission by building ever stronger and more effective bridges of understanding across religious, ethnic and national boundaries by way of education, advocacy and engagement. This Annual Report provides a taste of what has been an outstanding year. In the realm of religious communal relations our Atlanta Chapter has been very active. We hosted an extraordinary immigration forum that promoted better knowledge and understanding of the local and national immigration debate. We established what many of us anticipate will be a long-lasting friendship with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship, and took our first steps to finding common and productive ground with strongly Pro-Israel Evangelical leaders. We also once again sponsored the Atlanta Black-Jewish Coalition’s Marvin C. Goldstein Project Understanding Retreat for young Jewish and African-American leaders. In the area of Jewish continuity, access outdid itself during the past year. As the following pages attest, the programming was outstanding. Indeed this past year the national AJC office fully executed its plan to implement the Atlanta access model and name across the country.
Perhaps no program contributes as much to Jewish continuity and pride as the Atlanta Jewish Film Festival. In this, our seventh year, attendance jumped 30% to 9,000 “tushes in seats.” Our revenue grew as well: as we received support from an unprecedented number of sponsors, including the National Endowment for the Arts and the Academy for Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (yes, the Oscar people!). We found our audiences want more movies, more days and more locations. We will work to meet these desires and expectations. Internationally, our Jewish “State Department” role took on new and broader dimensions locally. We held substantive meetings with four U.S. Ambassadors and 15 Consuls General, visiting with several of them on multiple occasions. Also, our launching of the Africa Institute and continuing our Latino outreach initiative, along with our many other initiatives like Project Interchange, further burnished our State Department image and effectiveness. On top of these noteworthy activities, we are very proud of our record-breaking Annual Campaign. With very special dinner honorees and a century of achievement as a foundation, it is no wonder we surpassed our fundraising goal by 20%, raising more than $1.2 million. Finally, as we now enter the second year of AJC’s second century, we want to say thank you to all of you -- our members, donors and supporters. Because of you the Atlanta Chapter continues to excel and break new ground in building bridges of understanding through education, advocacy and engagement and, by doing so, makes a very positive difference every day in Atlanta and throughout the world.
Sincerely,
Kent Alexander Judy C. Marx President Executive Director

Intergroup Relations
AJC locally and nationally has been the leader in “building bridges of understanding.” Our members educated and engaged many religious and ethnic communities within Atlanta to discuss Jewish values and our connection to the challenging issues of today. Through our relationships and networks, we continued our advocacy work with new and pre-existing coalitions.
Immigration Forum “Immigration: The Facts, the Challenges and the Moral Response” was convened in December by The Atlanta Chapter, the Catholic Archdiocese of Atlanta and Leadership Atlanta drew several hundred of Atlanta’s civic and religious leaders. The program looked at one of the most debated topics in the U.S. today from the perspectives of legal, education and healthcare experts.
(L. to r.) Rabbi Mario Karpuj, Archbishop Wilton Gregory, Karen Wildau and Laura Kurlander, share a laugh after the community symposium.
Building Bridges of Understanding AJC continued developing relationships and building networks with diverse religious and ethnic communities.
The Atlanta Chapter hosted its third annual pre-Thanksgiving interfaith and interethnic luncheon. We read from America’s Table®, to celebrate our most prized civic virtues and values. This year we invited Atlanta’s Consular Corps and were delighted at the presence of Dr. Remedios Gomez Arnau, Consul General of Mexico and Dean of Atlanta’s Consular Corps along with Congressman John Lewis.
Ambassador Andrew Young’s first stop in Atlanta, following his unfortunate comments, was the AJC Office to express his regret and seek ways to rebuild solid relationships with the Jewish and Korean communities. At the meeting, he met with leaders of the Atlanta Chapter as well as leaders of the Korean and African American communities. (L. to r.) Kent Alexander, Ambassador Young and

Interreligious Outreach Following months of planning, AJC came together with the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship to learn about each other’s religions and try to see from each other’s points of view. Our Baptist-Jewish Dialogue was a tremendous success and we look forward to continuing this partnership with additional programs in the upcoming year.
(L. to r.) Professor Loyd Allen of Mercer University, Beth Halpern of the Weber School, First Vice-President Sheri Labovitz and Rev. Wayne Martin of the Cooperative Baptist Fellowship.
Indo-Jewish CoalitionWe continued engaging with our friends in the Indian community, hosting Ambassador Raminder Singh Jassal, former Indian Ambassador to Israel and current Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington D.C., to learn about the India-US-Israel relationship. We also sent three emissaries from the Indian community in Atlanta to Israel with Project Interchange in May.

Black-Jewish Coalition The Atlanta Black-Jewish Coalition has emerged as a central platform for education, outreach and advocacy in our community. As participation reaches new heights, the Coalition continues to build on its original mission by providing a forum for meaningful dialogue and action. This year the Coalition hosted the biennial Marvin C. Goldstein Project Understanding Young Leadership Retreat that brought together 18 Black and 18 Jewish young leaders for a weekend, to learn about their similarities and differences. We were once again honored to host Congressman John Lewis as he shared his personal and historical experiences.

International Affairs
AJC is a global leader in “Building Bridges of Understanding.” In
Atlanta, we hosted Diplomatic briefings to educate our members, advocated
to our Consuls General on issues ranging from the genocide in Darfur to the
global threat of Iran, as well as educated the Consular Corp about the Jewish
community locally and world wide. We also engaged new international
communities in Atlanta, with the incorporation of the Africa Institute into
our yearly programming schedule.
Diplomatic Meetings AJC, was invited to private meetings with top level diplomats from all over the world.
The Atlanta Chapter was honored to host His Excellency AbdulAzziz Kamilov, Ambassador of Uzbekistan to the United States, and Honorary Consul General of Uzbekistan Larry Kurlander, for a special tea where we discussed Uzbekistan’s role in global politics.
We had a private briefing with His Excellency Giovanni Castellaneta, Ambassador of Italy to the United States, prior to leaving his post, we hosted Carlos Layus, Consul General of Argentina to the Southeastern United States for a special discussion about the Jewish community in Argentina, and we had lunch with Shoji Ogawa, Consul General of Japan to the Southeastern United States, in his private residence.

Africa Institute In its inaugural year, the national leadership of the Africa Institute met with presidents, foreign ministers and ambassadors of twenty African nations. In Atlanta, we hosted four significant events: a kick-off program featuring Africa Institute Founder and National Chair, Stanley Bergman, with attendees including leadership from the African-American and African Diaspora communities, a luncheon for His Excellency Perezi Kamunanwire Ugandan Ambassador to the United States, a briefing with former Israeli Consul to Kenya Oren Rozenblat, co-sponsored a film with the Southern Center for International Studies and GoodWorks International about Rwanda, and has actively advocated to end the genocide in the Darfur region of Sudan.

Iran: “The Far-Reaching Repercussions”AJC has worked relentlessly to help awaken the world to the dangers of the extremist regime in Iran and its far-reaching repercussions. The issue topped our agenda at diplomatic meetings throughout the year. The Atlanta Chapter was fortunate to host an insider briefing with Daniel Kutner of the Israel Center for Political Research. 2006-2007 was another banner year for access. In addition to being adopted as AJC’s national model for young professionals, Atlanta’s access continued to develop opportunities for new Jewish leaders to grow and “build bridges of understanding.” Through outstanding programs that touch all aspects of AJC’s mission, access continued to engage the young professionals of the Jewish community.
Summer Shmooze & Sangria was our most succesful party yet, bringing together a large crowd of young professionals at Loca Luna. It was a great end to an amazing year for access. Í

The Atlanta Chapter provided the largest training in the United States, bringing together both emerging and experienced leaders to gain the knowledge and the skills for our community engagement.
Laura Kurlander listens intently as other participants share their interethnic and interreligious experiences at an EngagingAmerica session.
AJC prides itself in preparing emerging Jewish leaders to engage in key issues that reflect the Atlanta Chapter’s mission of “building bridges of understanding.” Both locally and nationally, AJC has played a significant role in developing Jewish leadership since 1906. This year we hosted two leadership programs that provided education and advocacy opportunities for our members.
