On Sunday, January 17th I preached on 1 Corinthians 12:1-11. Most of you know that this is oneof the passages in which St. Paul writes about the gifts of the Spirit. During the sermon I mentionedthe fact that this list is only a representation of spiritual gifts and not an all-inclusive list. The giftsmentioned in this list were included specifically to drive home a point to the Corinthian Church. Weknow that there are other spiritual gifts and that all spiritual gifts are a valued gift and treasure foruplifting the people of God. I also mentioned that I thought it was interesting that Paul does notinclude music as a spiritual gift on his lists. The singing of hymns is mentioned in Mark 14:26,Matthew 26:30 and 1 Corinthians 14:26 so we know that hymns have been a part of Christianworship from the very beginning.

I then asked the congregation to imagine what our Sunday morning worship would be like if we didnot have the organ, choir or praise band. How different worship would be without music. OnSunday, February 7th, my “prophesy” about music came true. Due to our second major snowstorm of the season, we did not have music at our worship services for that day (we didn’t havemany people either). Several people commented on how strange worship seemed without theorgan and singing of hymns (didn’t we just consider this in a sermon?). Sometimes we take forgranted how important various aspects of worship can be for us.

Our first Lenten Mid-Week program featured our Praise Band. If you did not attend this program, you definitely missed out. Many people came expecting that it would be the normal handful ofpeople who play regularly at the 10:00 Service on Sunday morning. However, our Praise Bandgathered together a variety of people who are truly gifted in the Spirit to lift us up in our faith. TheBand included teenagers, middle-agers and seniors. There were guitars, saxophone, trumpet, banjo, piano, harmonica and an accordion as well as several soloists. I know that many of us (yes,me too) were overjoyed and proud at how well these members of our church came together andtruly praised the Lord by offering up their gift in the Spirit through music.

The fond memory of that evening will be with me for a long time as it reminds me that our spiritualgifts are not real until we use them. Our Lord has given everyone a portion of the Spirit accordingto His will. The Spirit does not activate that gift until we choose to step forward and offer up to Godwhat he has first given us. We all should take a moment and look into who we are and what Godhas given us to be sure that our spiritual gifts are not going to waste. We might surprise ourselvesas well as others when we see how gifted and blessed we truly are through the Spirit of God.

May the Spirit of God descend upon your heart, and activate the gifts of the Spirit within you to buildup our brothers and sisters in Christ and to praise God in His great glory!

Grace and Peace,

Pastor Andy

Hi Snowbirds! Do you believe all this white stuff? And, to top it off, here weare sitting watching athletes perform in (of course) snow and ice. TheOlympics sure has been stimulating. For those of you who crochet and knit, this is our kind of weather. Stuck in the house, we have our hobbies to keepus going. And going some of us have been. Many are reporting thecompletion of more prayer shawls.

This chairperson could not attend our last meeting on Friday, February 5th.I was ill with a head cold. Many thanks to Beverly Bethany for stepping in andpresiding for me. In attendance were Barbara Anconetani, Val Colasuonno,Sally Miller, Mary Raws, Ellie Nolan, Terry Paradise, Vicki Ruzzi, and SarahWhelan. Shawls were received from Barbara Anconetani (3), BeverlyBethany, Val Colasuonno, Mary Raws, and Marie Thatcher (3). MarieThatcher has also made 2 others which she has presented to sick neighbors. What a group of industrious women. They continue to assist the Lord in Hiswork. We will keep Pastor Andy busy as he presents our prayer shawls todeserving recipients.

One of our members, Elaine Alspach, was hospitalized (twice) and is homerecuperating after surgery. Get well soon, Elaine. We miss you. God Bless You as you recover.

We are meeting Friday, March 5th, at 10:00 AM, downstairs next to thekitchen. As usual, we will have patterns available for both knitting andcrocheting. You are welcome at any time. If you just want to stop in and seewhat it is all about, please do so.

The Trinity Youth Group had its share of success and disappointment inFebruary. The February Youth Night had to be cancelled due to (can youbelieve it?) snow.

However, the Shrove Tuesday pancake supper was a success with over 15junior and senior youth helping . They worked hard to set up, prepare, andserve the food.

On February 28, the youth participated in a the IHOC walk for the homeless. We at Trinity can be very proud of our future leaders. Ten youthparticipated, and raised $840.50 to support this worthy cause. And, for thesecond year in a row, they were recognized at the event with a giant cookieas the top fund raising group. WAY TO GO GUYS!!

A Facebook Fan Page was also launched in February. For anyone with aFacebook account, the page can be found by searching "Trinity LutheranRunnemede Youth Group" . This page will be used to announce events,changes/cancellations, and post pictures.

The next Youth Night, weather permitting, is scheduled for March 13, 7-9:30pm. We will be watching the movie "Napoleon Dynamite" and unveiling ournew Ping Pong table. Come join us, and bring a friend.

The next youth planning meeting will be held March 8, 7-8 pm. We arealways looking for ideas and those who want to be involved in this importantMinistry.

Notes

A special thank you to Mr. Kraemer who accompanied us on Sunday,February 21st even though he had hit one of his fingers with a hammer. Isthat dedication or what? We are very grateful for his patience andhelpfulness each week and each time we sing.

Looking towards March we will be singing twice: Sunday, March 21st at allthree services as we do “I’m Gonna Follow Wherever You Go” and again aspart of the program Wednesday evening, March 24th. There we will besinging two songs: “Happiness Is To Know the Savior” with a solo by EmileeSchipski and a repeat of our February song: “If Jesus Came to My House.”Other groups participating will be both bell choirs, the Senior Choir andsoloists doing both vocal and instrumental numbers. It should be a greatevening for all!

Although our group isn’t as large as in some years in the past, we have agreat bunch of dedicated parents who bring the children and children whoparticipate. Many thanks to all. It is fun to learn to lead the congregation inworship and we are learning about the parts of the service so we can usebulletins.

Thanks to Miss Lisa for her helpfulness. It was nice to see Mr. Antonio withher, as well.

Hope to see you and yours for these special times.

Love to all, Mrs. Schmidt

I hope to have more to report to you regarding wheelchair purchases, the Spring Fair/June Day andtotals for our February church fund drive for the Home.

We’ve continued to receive nice donations for things for the Home - arts and crafts items, whiteelephant table items, jewelry, etc.

Our bingo ladies informed us that they were again in need of over the head necklaces for prizes.Just 15 minutes prior to that request, one of our congregants handed me a good sized bag ofjewelry items. It contained a nice amount of over the head necklaces as well as other items to bedonated to the Home. The Lord was good and faithful to provide the much needed “prizenecklaces” before I even knew there was a need. Thank You, Lord! Thank you Trinity for yourcontinued faithfulness to the Lutheran Home.

God is good and faithful to provide!

Sincerely,Sandy Counsellor
