and have been able to serve in our communities for the
last six years. God has blessed us and sent us out with
his love and words of Hope. We are coming to the end of
our Hope Miyagi Tsunami Relief project as of March,
2017. However, even though we won’t accept any
more volunteers as Hope Miyagi, as Shiogama Church
we will continue serving our communities by visiting and
doing monthly events with our NPO "Bread of Life" Food
Bank. We would like to continue pouring water on the
seeds many of you have helped to plant in the hearts
and lives of our friends. I would like you to take a look
at our food bank ministry information and join us in
anticipation of the great harvest to come. This is going to
be our last newsletter. Thank you so much for being a
part of Hope Miyagi. We cannot find enough words to
sufficiently thank each one of you. God bless you!
House Church Updates
Watari (from Kogos)
Last April, cooperating missionary Jungmi Lee joined
our Watari house church. Church planting and the
Tsunami Relief project have been our main ministries.
Temporary housing units were closed in June, 2016, and
God has led us to a new location for our monthly events.
People who used to live close to one another and who
became good neighbors are now spread all over and
they feel so alone and desolate. Hope Miyagi events
have been helping to give opportunities to get together
again and to regularly see each other over tea and some
fun activities. The Social Welfare Council of Watari Town
has supported us since September, 2016. It is a great
opportunity for people to get connected and feel a part of
their new community. The "Bread of Life" food bank has
been blessing the community with Costco bread and
food items. We, along with volunteers, deliver food items
to those who are in need. They are happy to receive
these things and they welcome us as we visit them. We
work together as a team with the Okitas, leaders from
Keisen Sennan Chapel, to pray regularly for our dear
friends. The Okitas have been a great encouragement to
us. One lady made a decision to follow Jesus! God is
sending volunteers for Kids club! Good things are
starting to happen! This is just the beginning! Please
pray for God’s blessings and for continual support and
encouragement for Watari!
Sendai Konan (from Otomos)
Thank you for your love and support and for your
prayers! We appreciate each one of you. We met so
many friends and families in the Nipperia Temporary
housing units and we hosted events in the meeting room
every month. There were 200 units there, but in
September of 2016, all units were closed. Hope Miyagi
received words of appreciation from the town leaders for
what we have done since the tsunami. We had great
opportunities to reach out to the communities and share
love and bring the good news of Jesus Christ! We invited
the friends from Nipperia to our house church events and
in that way sought to continue our relationships. As the
years passed we didn't get to see much of those we met
through the Samaritan’s Purse project. However, through
the "Bread of Life" project, we once again have a reason
to go visit and deliver bread to those friends. May God
continue blessing this new food bank ministry. We
would like to see God using us to reach out to the
families and friends who lost so much in 2011.
Regional Reports
Sakuragi Park Ministry, Sakuragi Smile
Yasu has continued building good relationships in the
community and going to the Tuesday Park outreach.
Many came to the Sakuragi Smile Christmas party where
we shared the good news of great joy. Christ Centered
Community Church from Hawaii was there to bring the
fun of a Piñata!
Shichigahama Town
It has been a year since our Shichigahama friends
have moved to their new homes. Hope Miyagi hosts
monthly events for the new communities in two public
housing complexes, which have meeting rooms where
we can hold these events. We began to meet in the
- 3 -
meeting room of the government housing apartments in
Shobuta, but God closed the door for us to continue
meeting there. As we prayed and asked for another
place to meet, God led us to a new evacuation center
across the street from the apartment building. It even
has more space! So we ended up inviting more friends
in the community and our gathering has been blessed in
the broader sense! I learned to see that when God
closes one door he opens another! I was blessed to be a
part of Hope Miyagi in order to give the residents
opportunities to get connected with one another and to
bring encouragement to those who live by themselves.
There are friends from this community who come to
church and enjoy fellowship there. We would like to
continue these good relationships with our friends by
visiting them and also through the food bank ministry.
Thank you for remembering Shichigahama in your
prayers! (Hiromi)
Shiogama and Urato Islands
Hope Miyagi is helping the Hatanaka family and the
NPO “High-Five” on Nonoshima Island. Weeding,
planting seeds, building a deck, making a tool box,
digging the water ditch and other things. It has been a
great encouragement to the Hatanakas and to those who
live on the island.
Oshika Peninsula
(Oginohama, Kobuchihama, Yagawa)
Our friends in Oshika are Oyster farmers who are busy
shelling oysters from September to March. During the
other months, they clean the ropes and buoys for their
oyster farming and work on the many other preparations
for harvest. Other fishermen grow sea pineapples and
Wakame seaweed. They use clamshells for harvesting
oysters and then they use oyster shells for harvesting
sea pineapples. Very interesting! When we go there with
volunteer teams, there are lots of helping hands. Our
help is so small and limited; however these fishermen
are happy to see us coming to help. During the tea and
lunch break, they share their stories. It often seems
there is not enough time to simply listen to their stories.
We have been learning to make listening more of our
priority instead of just doing the work.
Hiromi, Hope Miyagi staff
It has been 6 years since the March 11 earthquake and
tsunami. With your love and encouragement in both
actions and prayers, Hope Miyagi has been serving the
disaster-hit communities, becoming the helping hands of
Jesus. I look back at our photos and blogs over the last
year of 2016 and am reminded of how God has blessed
us with teams and individuals who came and helped. We
made visits together and got our hands dirty in order to
help farmers and fishermen. Volunteers came alongside
our hurting friends and they listened to their stories. I
saw many receive encouragement through that. Hope
Miyagi sponsors a simple event every month, serving tea
and doing a fun activity together. Jesus goes with us and
he lives inside of us, listening to these friends' stories
during the event. We share his peace and a love-filled
atmosphere because of His presence. There was always
someone to go out with me as a team and that was a
huge blessing and encouragement for me. It has been 4
1/2 years since I started serving as a Hope Miyagi staff
member. I have received healing and encouragement for
my own soul through serving and meeting people. I am
very thankful God brought me to serve here. Right now
there is so much unknown for the future, but I trust Him
who led me this far, that he will direct me now according
to His perfect will. Thank you to those who specifically
supported me in my monthly needs last year. All my
needs were met and I appreciate you very much. When I
heard that Hope Miyagi will be coming to the end, it was
very sad news. I would like to continue to visit our friends
and keep in touch with them. Shiogama Church will also
continue serving the communities through the food bank.
Recovering and healing of hearts has really just started. I
would appreciate your on-going prayers for each
precious soul you have touched in the past, that they
would meet Jesus in His time.

Michio Sugawara, "Bread of Life" Food Bank
"Bread of Life" volunteers have delivered bread and
food items to those who are in need and to families who
experienced the tsunami. A new Costco store in Tomiya,
Miyagi, is providing us bread 7 to 8 times a month. A city
office gives us a call when they need food items for the
people who are in need of support. In October, we
hosted an educational outreach event for the World Food
day with Japan International Food for the Hungry. About
100 people participated.
We face difficulties in gathering funds and meeting a
target group who are really in need. We would like you to
consider helping our food bank in two specific ways: one
is to become supporting members. The second is
providing us with food items. For more information,
please take a look at our last page (in Japanese).
Prayer Requests
* People who experienced the tsunami in Shichigahama,
Wakabayashi, and Watari have moved from temporary
housing to their new permanent homes within the last
year. Things are settling down now, but their hearts
are weary after the stresses and strains of these last 6
years. Pray that Shiogama Church will continue to
encourage those who are in need.
* God will bless the relationships we have with people
who experienced the tsunami. Pray that the "Bread
of Life" Food Bank will be a help to meeting the needs
in the community.
* God will bless the Miyagi Mission Network, not only in
Miyagi but in all of Tohoku, and that he will bless the
church network throughout Japan, resulting in more
churches being started.
* For Christians who are serving in Tohoku, especially for
their physical and spiritual health.
