Mental health has become extremely high profile over the last year and we wanted to do some work around how to deal with worries without actually talking about mental health. With children so young, sometimes raising awareness of mental illness can actually cause them to worry more. The week started with the children listening to a story “The Huge Bag of Worries” by Virginia Ironside. It is a story which teaches the children about talking about their worries. A problem shared is a problem halved. Please talk to your children about the day and maybe talk to them about who they would talk to if they were worried. It is important that they have somebody to talk too. It might be you but remember it doesn’t have to be. The other highlight of the week was Year 2’s trip to The Look Out. When I asked a couple of children what they had learned, they said “science stuff”. To be fair to them, when I asked Mrs Jackson she did confirm that it covered nearly the whole science curriculum. It sounded really exciting launching hydrogen rockets, playing tunes with light beams etc.

22nd June 2018

Dear Parents,

We started this week with our first ever “Good to Talk” day. Mental health has become

extremely high profile over the last year and we wanted to do some work around how to deal

with worries without actually talking about mental health. With children so young, sometimes

raising awareness of mental illness can

actually cause them to worry more.

The week started with the children listening

to a story “The Huge Bag of Worries” by

Virginia Ironside. It is a story which

teaches the children about talking about

their worries. A problem shared is a

problem halved. Please talk to your

children about the day and maybe talk to

them about who they would talk to if they

were worried. It is important that they have

somebody to talk too. It might be you but

remember it doesn’t have to be.

The other highlight of the week was Year

2’s trip to The Look Out. When I asked a

couple of children what they had learned,

they said “science stuff”. To be fair to

them, when I asked Mrs Jackson she did

confirm that it covered nearly the whole

science curriculum. It sounded really

exciting – launching hydrogen rockets,

playing tunes with light beams etc.

It is getting to the time of year where things are getting really busy. Please make sure you keep

an eye on the dates at the end of the calendar as unfortunately they do have to change

occasionally.

Have a lovely weekend,

Mr Holdsworth

RE Inspection

Next Tuesday we have our Section 48 inspection. This is a Diocesan inspection which

Catholic schools should have about every 5 years and our last one was in 2012 so we are

definitely overdue. I will be sending home a questionnaire and envelope so that you can feed

back to the inspector. Please could the questionnaires be returned by Tuesday morning.

Thank you

Mr Holdsworth

Chess Champion

Following a term of chess matches, run by

Miss Mansfield, we finally have our school

chess champion. It was an extremely closely

fought match between last year’s winner

and the new champion. The tournament was

very competitive but there was an extremely

emotional finish with both boys giving each

other a hug. This culminated in Benedict

ODonnell (last year’s champion) presenting

Barnaby Watts (this year’s champion) with

the trophy in today’s Good News assembly.

As Mr Weatherill said, “Chess was the

winner!”

Our Lady’s School Trust

Dear Parents,

As our Financial Year has drawn to a close, we as Trustees would like to thank all the families, who have been donating to The OLS Trust .

We are extremely grateful to have such a lovely and supportive community of parents, families

and friends in our school! ❤

Because your support is so precious to us, we would like to show you how your donations help the school (and subsequently our children) throughout the year.

And so, below you will find our Receipts and Payments Statement for 2017/2018 period for your information, followed by a more detailed explanation.

Please also take a note of the Gift Aid figure: this is what we managed to claim for the previous financial period on top of your donations. This was possible purely thanks to many of you signing up for the Gift Aid Scheme, where HMRC gives us 25p extra for every £1 you donate to The Trust

Smartboards 🖼: £3,968 was paid for a new smartboard installed in Reception classroom

Internet Safety Scheme: £750 was paid for The Digital Leaders Project

ICT resources 💻: £6988 is the amount we paid for 7 new computers for the ICT suite as the old equipment had slowly become outdated and inefficient.

Curriculum resources📖:

£1350 for new Geography Books

£928 for New Spelling Scheme (including the new spelling booklets)

Marketing: £277 is what we paid for new OLS Trust brochures design and print

----------------------------------------------------

New financial period:

Following our last meeting, The Trust agreed to pay a 10% contribution towards the cost of putting up the new top playground shelter and canopy by Reception and demolition of the old ones. The amount we wrote the cheque for was £4,080.

We have also agreed to pay for a new digital screen for the hall 📽, as the current one has gradually become unfit for purpose due to its age and obsolete technology. The estimate net is £3000 and once an actual invoice is in place, we will be making a payment.

If you have any questions regarding the above information, or indeed any aspects of the OLS Trust, please do not hesitate to talk to any of Trustees- we are more than happy to assist you with your queries.

-------------------------------------

We are hoping to put up a new information board outside, which we will use to introduce ourselves and keep in touch with you.

The plan is to make it a more regular thing to communicate to you how your contributions are used by the Trust, so please watch this space!

Your OLS Trust Team

Thank you

I would just like to express my thanks to the Trust and PTA. We have had two new purchases

this week: the Bell Tent which is a lovely outdoor space paid for by the PTA and a new 85

inch screen in the hall paid for by the Trust. I regularly go round other schools and very few

have the resources our children have. I would love to take the credit and say it was down to

shrewd financial management but if I’m honest it wouldn’t be like this without parents

contributing so much.

Thank you

Mr Holdsworth

Squash Camps

Over the past two years we have been working with Sam Mueller introducing a squash club

and then bringing squash into the curriculum. It has been a great success so please have a

look at the information below.
