Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Mercy Family,

Greetings and Peace of the Lord be with you! As we continue our Lenten pilgrimage together and navigate through these unprecedented times of hardship, pain and isolation in our lives; we are yet encouraged to know that our all-loving, all-knowing and all-merciful God

is in the eye of the storm. We are a people of faith, hope and charity! In today’s Gospel message we are reminded that we were all born blind and were groping in spiritual darkness. It was on the day of our baptism that we began our spiritual journey of faith in the likeness of Jesus Christ. The new life we receive at baptism gives us the power to bring His love and healing to everything we do and every person we meet. Each of us is meant to be a beacon of light showing others how to live and giving direction to their lives by our good example. The light of Christ is most especially being reflected in and through us today and all the days ahead.

In light of our present situation, I want to ensure you that we are all sharing the disappointment of not being able to celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and receive Communion with you duringthis timeframe, as well as being able to administer the precious Sacraments of God’s grace to you when needed. It is indeed a sacrifice for each one of us. The priests are, however, celebrating private Masses each day at the scheduled times on behalf of the People of God to maintain a spiritual Communion with the entire parish faith community (family). Moreover, the special intention for that particular Mass is being honored and revered during the sacrifice. The priests are praying for your safety, health, and well-being most earnestly during these days, and we thank you for your kind prayers for us as well. Please note the lower Church will remain open each day from 6:00am to 5:00pm for private prayer and devotions. We also ask you to maintain a certain physical distance of at least six feet from one another as per the current protocols. The directives we received from the Diocese of Rockville Centre can be found elsewhere on this website, and will be updated periodically as information becomes available. The Rectory Office will be closed during the unforeseeable future, please call the priest duty phone at (516) 782-1557 for emergencies, or if you have any other deep concerns. We are also looking at other ways and ideas in which we can minister to each other during these most difficult and challenging times.

The Second Vatican Council had this beautiful phrase; our homes are a “Domestic Church.” Perhaps this is a wonderful opportunity to increase family prayer time by watching Holy Mass on the television or praying the Rosary together; prayer at the hinges of each day (morning and evening) and before every meal; or other spiritual ways to keep connected to God and love of neighbor. I am a firm believer that prayer is one of the most powerful things we can do at this moment in time to help us and the world to calm the storm. God will protect us and rid us of this dreadful virus as we return to Him with all our hearts, minds and strength; He will give us peace as we genuinely take care of one another.

I would like to offer an Act of Spiritual Communion Prayer (to be said at Communion time when watching the Mass on TV or on the computer): My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally; Come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You are already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen.

Lastly, I would like to add some inspiration words from our Auxiliary Bishop, Richard Henning; “This long Lenten Season will be unlike any before in our lives. Right now, thousands of lives depend upon the decisions and actions of each one of us. If we heed the counsel of our medical professionals, they need time to cope with the storm that is breaking upon them – and they need us to help them slow the spread of the virus to buy that precious time. They, and we, need every medical resource for the care of those most vulnerable to this virus. Our isolation, our sacrifice of even that most dear to our hearts, will help make certain that those resources are there for those who need them most.”

“Lent is about prayer, fasting, and almsgiving – know this, this extraordinary moment is an act of charity. We have not closed our Churches in fear; we are embracing a cross for love of our [neighbor]. We will not be able to exercise our ministry in the usual way, but we can exercise ministry nevertheless. Please, help the People of God understand the nature of this moment and the sacrifice that has been asked of us all.”

May our Lord Jesus, the Divine Physician, heal us of every illness and affliction; and in His great mercy forgive us, watch over us, and save us; and may our Blessed Mother Mary, Our Lady of Mercy, keep us always under the mantle of her love, care and protection into eternity.

With my sincere prayers, I remain truly yours in Christ,

Father John McCarthy

What you need to know about coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)

What is coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19)? Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a respiratory illness that can spread from person to person. The virus that causes COVID-19 is a novel coronavirus that was first identified during an investigation into an outbreak in Wuhan, China.

Can people in the U.S. get COVID-19? Yes. COVID-19 is spreading from person to person in parts of the United States. Risk of infection with COVID-19 is higher for people who are close contacts of someone known to have COVID-19, for example healthcare workers, or household members. Other people at higher risk for infection are those who live in or have recently been in an area with ongoing spread of COVID-19. Learn more about places with ongoing spread at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/transmission.html#geographic.

Have there been cases of COVID-19 in the U.S.? Yes. The first case of COVID-19 in the United States was reported on January 21, 2020. The current count of cases of COVID-19 in the United States is available on CDC’s webpage at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/cases-in-us.html.

How does COVID-19 spread? The virus that causes COVID-19 probably emerged from an animal source, but is now spreading from person to person. The virus is thought to spread mainly between people who are in close contact with one another (within about 6 feet) through respiratory droplets produced when an infected person coughs or sneezes. It also may be possible that a person can get COVID-19 by touching a surface or object that has the virus on it and then touching their own mouth, nose, or possibly their eyes, but this is not thought to be the main way the virus spreads. Learn what is known about the spread of newly emerged coronaviruses at https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/about/transmission.html.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?Patients with COVID-19 have had mild to severe respiratory illness with symptoms of• fever• cough• shortness of breath

What are severe complications from this virus? Some patients have pneumonia in both lungs, multi-organ failure and in some cases death.

How can I help protect myself? People can help protect themselves from respiratory illness with everyday preventive actions.   • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.• Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with

unwashed hands. • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20

seconds. Use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol if soap and water are not available.

If you are sick, to keep from spreading respiratory illness to others, you should• Stay home when you are sick. • Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the

tissue in the trash. • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects

and surfaces.

What should I do if I recently traveled from an area with ongoing spread of COVID-19?If you have traveled from an affected area, there may be restrictions on your movements for up to 2 weeks. If you develop symptoms during that period (fever, cough, trouble breathing), seek medical advice. Call the office of your health care provider before you go, and tell them about your travel and your symptoms. They will give you instructions on how to get care without exposing other people to your illness. While sick, avoid contact with people, don’t go out and delay any travel to reduce the possibility of spreading illness to others.

Is there a vaccine? There is currently no vaccine to protect against COVID-19. The best way to prevent infection is to take everyday preventive actions, like avoiding close contact with people who are sick and washing your hands often.

Is there a treatment? There is no specific antiviral treatment for COVID-19. People with COVID-19 can seek medical care to help relieve symptoms.

On Stewardship Spirituality

We have reached the midpoint of the Lenten Season, Lae-tare Sunday, and it is time to Rejoice! So, set aside time to rejoice: give thanks to God, reflect on our Lenten offerings (never too late to start!), and pray. Stewards are people of prayer.

Up to the Mountain—reflections by Bishop Barron In the account of the Transfiguration, we heard that Jesus took Peter, James and John with him “up to the mountain to pray.” Mountains are a standard in the Bible as the place to encounter God. The mountain symbolizes transcendence, otherness, the realm of God. While we don’t have to literally go to a mountain to pray, we should acknowledge the symbolism when we do. In order to commune with God, you need to step out of your everyday, workaday world. So while we may ‘pray on the go’ or consider all ‘our work is our pray-er,’ now is an ideal time to become a people of prayer. It is time to re-joice, go higher or beyond your normal world. Your mountain might be church, a special place in your house, the car, or a corner of nature. But it has to be someplace where you have stepped out of your ordinary, everyday world. Choose today to go up to the mountain to pray. Meet God in a higher place. ~Email us at [email protected] for more on Stewardship!

Now you are light in the Lord. Live as children of light, for light produces every kind of goodness and righteousness and truth. Try to

learn what is pleasing to the Lord. — Ephesians 5:8-10

Join us for the OLM Lenten Retreat on the remaining

Wednesdays of Lent. Come, deepen your under-standing of your faith as we

explore Bishop Barron’s Catholicism.

St. Paul calls us to reflect the light of Christ: “Awake O sleeper… and Christ will give you light.” To really reflect this light, we need to seek it, recognize it and hold onto it. That is what Lent is about—what Steward-ship is about—our willingness to see that it is time for us to be the light, commit ourselves to lives that bring us closer to God and to holiness. Light is an important symbol throughout the Bible, representing knowledge, wisdom, happiness and holiness. Christ came into the world to give sight to those who are spiritually blind—to all of us. At this midpoint of Lent, we need to rejoice, take the light of Christ and share it, spread it through stewardship with everyone we know, everyone we meet!

BECOME A SHEPHERD & HELP STOP HUMAN TRAFFICKING

How I wish that all of us would hear God’s cry: ‘Where is your brother?’ (Gen. 4:9). Where is your brother or sister who is enslaved? Where is the brother and sister whom you are killing each day in clandestine warehouses, in rings of prostitution, in children used for begging, in exploiting undocumented labor? Let us not look the other way.”

– Pope Francis, Evangelli Gaudium

An Act of Spiritual Communion My Jesus,

I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and

unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

“Sacred art is true and beautiful when its form corresponds to its particular vocation: evoking and glorifying, in faith and adoration, the transcendent mystery of God—the surpassing invisible beauty of truth and love visible in Christ, who "reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature," in whom "the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily." This spiritual beauty of God is reflected in the most holy Virgin Mother of God, the angels, and saints. Genuine sacred art draws man to adoration, to prayer, and to the love of God, Creator and Savior, the Holy One and Sanctifier.”

The Our Lady of Mercy Joseph F. Lamb #5723 Knights meet on the 1st, 3rd and 4th Thursday evening of the month at 7:30 PM in

the school cafeteria.

We are Catholic gentlemen who exemplify the principles of the Knights of Columbus:

charity, unity, fraternity and patriotism.

We are a dynamic group of your fellow parishioners, from founders of the parish to young men new to our parish. Together with our Pastor, Fr. John, we strive to enhance our

parish community. We have painted the lower church and the convent dining room, raised money for children with disabilities, contributed to cancer research, cooked breakfast for the bi-annual Parish Blood drives, sponsored Parish Dinner Dances,

St. Patrick and Italian Nights and, of course, the annual Halloween Party. We sponsor the

Altar Servers' Recognition Breakfast, Communion Breakfasts and more.

Evangelization is our mission in the Church. It is the mission Jesus gave us when He said, “Go and make disciples of every nation…” (Matt. 28:19).

If we have been baptized into the Body of Christ, and given the Holy Spirit to share in Christ’s mis-sion, we must do what He did: seek out the lost, gather people together, and share the good news of salvation. At the end of Mass, we are sent forth like the Apos-tles: “Go, and proclaim the Gospel with your life.” The spiritual and corporal works of mercy also embody this call. The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is an opportunity to support the ministries that help us as we build up the Body of Christ.

In 1931, Our Lord, Jesus Christ appeared to

Sister Faustina Kowalska. She saw Jesus clothed in a

white garment with His right hand raised in blessing.

His left hand was touching His garment in the area

of the heart, from where two large rays came forth, one red and the other pale.

Jesus said to her: “Paint an image according to the pattern you see with the

signature: Jesus, I trust in You… I am offering people

a vessel with which they are to keep coming for graces

to the fountain of mercy. That vessel is this

image with the signature: ‘Jesus, I trust in You’ . ”

In the Jubilee Year 2000,

Pope John Paul II canonized Saint Faustina and declared

the Sunday after Easter to be known as

“Divine Mercy Sunday.”

Catholics Care. Catholics Vote. Participate in political life.

In their statement on Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, the U.S. Catholic bishops remind Catholics about the call to participate in political life. "In the Catholic tradition," they write, "responsible citizenship is a virtue, and participation in political life is a moral obligation" (no. 13).

Visit www.faithfulcitizenship.org today to read the statement, watch videos, and access

ALMSGIVING The foundational call of Christians to charity is a frequent theme of the Gospels. During Lent, we are asked to focus more intently on "almsgiving," which means donating money or goods to the poor and performing other acts of charity. As one of the three pillars of Lenten practice, almsgiving is "a witness to fraternal charity" and "a work of justice pleasing to God."

(Catechism of the Catholic Church, no. 2462).

As we continue to struggle with the effects that COVID -19 is having on our

community, let us continue to work together through prayer and precaution to help ensure that our community and church

will be vibrant for future generations.

Not unlike weekly giving to your parish offertory, gifts to the Catholic Ministries

Appeal are essential to our mission. As such we are processing mail as quickly as possible with limited staff, but we are also encouraging you to give online at

https://www.drvc.org/donate/cma/ if you are able.

If you would like to call us to make a gift or text to give, please call 516-678-5800 ext. 257 and we will get back to you as

soon as possible.
