Curriculum Matters

AFTER 12 long years and hundreds of pens and post‐it notes, it’s D‐Day for Year 12 students on 3 November when all Year 12

students begin their VCE written examinations with English. The following tips came from a newspaper article with advice to

students on how to cope with the stress of exams.

Psychologist Janine Rod said breathing exercises and relaxing music can help calm pre‐exam nerves. "Read, go to the gym, catch up with a mate, watch a movie," Ms Rod said. "Research has shown that going for a walk before study is an effective way to calm the nerves, clear the head and help feel more motivated."

Rowan Kunz, author of Secrets of HSC/ VCE Success Revealed, urges students to stop studying at 9.30pm the night before an exam. "Watch TV or read a book, or do something else you enjoy to relax your mind and help you sleep," Mr Kunz said. "You'll wake up refreshed and recharged to perform." He advised students to avoid looking at their notes on the morning of an exam. "Realising you don't know something an hour before will put you off from a psychological perspective, " he said. Nutritionists say a good breakfast is vital on an exam morning ‐ low‐GI carbohydrates and lean protein give sustained energy. Good choices are eggs on wholegrain toast, oats or muesli with yoghurt and fruit. Students with afternoon exams should avoid snacking on high sugar foods. Swap sugary treats for low‐fat

ice cream on a stick, skim milk hot chocolates, low fat dip with crackers or vegetables, trail mix and dark chocolate. Ms Rod said it was also important to avoid over‐analysing an exam. "Feel good about doing a competent job rather than demanding perfection," she said. "Once the exam is complete, don't over‐analyse what you did and didn't do." Focus on the next exam and remember there are many pathways to future success. I know the school community will join me in wishing the class of 2011 well in all their endeavours.

A NEW‐LOOK SPEECH NIGHT

The College Speech Night will take a new form this year . . . Regnet Christus Day— a Celebration of Excellence– will take place on Friday 18 November at 9.15am in the College Hall. We look forward to celebrating the achievements of your daughters with you.

OLSH wins funding for Chinese teaching and learning On 28 September, the Minister for School Education, the Hon Peter Garrett MP, announced the successful projects for Round Three of the Becoming Asia Literate: Grants to Schools. Student Wellbeing Matters

Seven ways to keep mentally healthy Last week, Mental Health Week was recognised nationally, and we were all called to raise awareness of depression and anxiety and reduce the associated stigma. We need to constantly ask ourselves: depression and anxiety don’t discriminate, do you? How can we be proactive in the area of mental health and stay mentally healthy? 1. We all relax in different ways. Work out how you relax and do it

regularly, not just when you need it. Remember that good sleep is very important.

2. Try to spend time with good and positive company; friends, family, work col‐leagues and school friends

3. Spend time regularly with yourself, away from all demands. Look after yourself by thinking of things you might enjoy such as reading a book, taking a walk and listening to some music. 4. Imagine some simple changes to your routines which may increase your positive feelings. Get out of bed earlier, meet some new people, take a walk to a cafe and read the newspaper. 5. If you are worrying about something, try to understand your thoughts and the reasons for them by writing the problem down and talking to someone about the problem. 6. Set some realistic goals for yourself and once achieved set new ones. 7. Exercise regularly, ideally about 20 minutes each day and eat healthy nourishing food.

Great opportunities—become involved

Glen Eira City Council Youth Services is recruiting for their 2012 youth programs (programs are free): Youth Leadership Team and Plugged In.

Youth Leadership Team is a group of dynamic young volunteers from the community who are interested in developing their leadership skills. The program runs from February until December and participants organise youth events such as Battle of the Bands and the Youth Art Expo. Members receive training in event management and leadership.

Plugged In is a music program for young people interested in learning about the recording process. The program is held at Glen Eira Youth Services recording studio. This program runs once a week during school terms (approximately eight sessions). Students gain valuable experience and learn how to set up and run recording sessions. The Minister for Youth Affairs Ryan Smith is looking for young people who are interested in becoming part of the new Involve committee to provide advice on important matters affecting young Victorians.

Involve Committee Are you passionate about making a difference? Do you want to be involved in your local community? If so, the Victorian government is looking for you!! Two members for this committee will come from this region, so why not someone from OLSH Bentleigh? More information about Involve can be found at www.youthcentral.vic.gov.au/involve If you are interested in any of the above programs see Ms Oro for nomination forms.

Swimming Carnival Just keep swimming!

A reminder that the swimming carnival will be held at MSAC on 28 October and that all permission slips are now overdue. Years 7 to 9 students will be travelling with the school by bus and our Year 10 and 11 students will be making their own way to MSAC. This is a compulsory school event and it is an expectation that all students are in attendance. All students must be in full PE uniform, House colours can be worn once at MSAC. A medical certificate will be required for those who are absent on the day. It is shaping up to be a great day and an enormous amount of effort has gone into the organisation of the event by staff and student leaders. So who will take the coveted trophy home this year?

Will it be Xavier, Hartzer, Chevalier or Sweeney???

This year some students from Years 7, 8 and 9 were selected to participate in the University of New South Wales ICAS Mathematics Competition and the Australian Mathematics Competition (AMC) conducted in August. When written as a decimal number, it goes on forever. Many valiant attempts were made and a showdown was held in the library, resulting in two girls reciting π to one hundred decimal places. Perhaps they would have gone further, but we only provided the value to one hundred places. The joint winners were Sarah Cleary and Lily Tan. Well done girls. Mr Howard Liston

Pay it Forward On Thursday 23 June the Intermediate VCAL girls ran an animal‐themed casual clothes day, to raise money for the World Society for the Protection of Animals, aka “WSPA”. As a part of one of our VCAL outcomes, we all had to pick a charity we would like to support and a fundraising event that would be suitable to raise money for the charity. Part one was to prepare and present an oral presentation to the class explaining our chosen charity and why we thought our charity was the best to support. Some of the charities that were put forward were: Diabetes Victoria, Sane Australia, Beyond Blue and Fred Hollows Foundation. All the charities affected us on a personal level, so it was difficult for us to choose which one to support. We, and the year 12 Senior VCAL students, voted for their favourite charity. Rebecca Pratt’s charity WSPA had the most preferential votes. Part two of the assignment was to prepare and present an oral presentation to the class explaining about our fundraising event and why we thought it would be a successful event to run. Again, we and the year 12s voted and Rebecca Pratt’s idea for the animal‐themed day was chosen. We then had to work together to organise a meeting with our principal Ms O’Loughlin for her to give the approval to run the day. The day was a great success as each student and teachers happily got involved in the day by dressing up as an animal or in animal print. They brought a gold coin to raise money for the charity. With the great contribution and effort of the school, we were able to raise over $600. Jessica Simonet and Vanessa Thurgood On behalf of the Yr 11 Intermediate VCAL girls

Parents and Friends Update

CHOCOLATE DRIVE Just a reminder to students and parents that you now have to get money back to the office for the Chocolate Drive. If you feel that you still have a demand for ‘choccies’ you can order another box but it would be good at this time of the year if you could pay for the ‘choccies’ up front with the $50 payment. The school year is soon over and it would be good not have to chase money at the last minute. Your help with this is really appreciated.

OLSH APRONS Don’t forget that we have lovely OLSH aprons for sale. They make a great pressie for family and friends and priced at just $12 for one or $20 for two or more they make a great present for Christmas without costing the earth! If you want to order an apron call Jennifer on 0400 950 341 or drop a note to school reception (addressed to the P&F) providing your order requirements, money, daughter’s name and class and we will send the aprons back via your daughter. Order forms available at the College reception.

IGA We hope that you are all using the OLSH IGA cards as they are also a great way to raise funds quietly and don’t intrude on your day‐ to‐day shopping activities. If you don’t have an OLSH IGA card or have lost your card, send us a quick note via the College reception and we will be glad to replace your card.

CATHOLIC SCHOOL RAFFLE WILL RUN AGAIN IN 2012 We are running this successful event again in 2012 and the P&F want to let you know in advance! The more tickets we sell, the more money we make for our students. More details will come out closer to the end of the year but we wanted to forewarn you all so you can start making plans to help. This was a very easy way for the P&F to fundraise. If every family bought only one raffle book we would make approx $9,000. We are charged 50 cents per ticket and can make $1.50 on each ticket sale. There are ten tickets per raffle book. Please help if you can, use the summer break to tell others to increase the potential sales we can make. This event is likely to start in February and close in early May 2012.

Ms Jennifer Knowles, P&F President

SCSA Softball

On Thursday, 13 October, OLSH's junior softball team went to Jells Park to compete in the SCSA Softball tournament. The juniors were very enthusiastic and started off with a great win against Mater Christi. The whole team played very well for the whole day but unfortunately the team did not finish with any other wins. In the end we finished up 5th but we learnt a lot about the game and are looking forward to the SESG Softball season in Term 4. The Intermediates started the day strongly with two wins and the enthusiasm continued throughout the day. We finished up with two wins, two losses and a draw which was not enough to sneak into the finals. All of the games were very close and exciting. Sadly, we didn’t make the finals but the team showed fabulous sportsmanship all day, and we had heaps of fun playing this great game. We are now concentrating on the SESG Softball season and will try to capture a flag by winning some of those close games over the next few weeks. Mrs Robyn Rayment, Sports Co‐ordinator

If we don’t get a chance to say it again before the end of the year, on behalf of the P&F Committee, thank you for your support of our fundraising initiatives across 2011. Your help has been appreciated and we hope you will be able to continue assisting us in 2012.
