Divine Mercy Sunday Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church April 19, 2020

    Dear OLSH Family:

Pope John Paul II designated this Sunday after Easter as Divine Mercy Sunday. Weeks and weeks ago now the national Divine Mercy shrine in Mas-sachusetts cancelled its big annual day this week-

end. What does it mean that so many can’t get to Confession and Mass on this very day? That Lent ended the way it did with livestream Masses? That so many cannot receive the Eucharist, not just here, but around the world. That used to be a thing Americans knew happened in the world but didn’t have to expe-rience themselves. And yet, here we are. Priests with empty churches and hearts longing for the Lord In the sacraments. But isn’t a sign of God’s great mercy toward us that we have the Church – and by that I don’t mean just the physical building, but the Word of the Lord and the fact that Masses are still being said and that God is drawing us all into a deeper interior life? I know it’s hard – whether you are in a crowded house or alone, there are challenges. Some of you have lost your jobs, lost loved ones. It is a test of trust in the Lord. At the same time, Easter teaches us that nothing can keep God from loving us. Not even death! And not even a cancelled Divine Mercy celebration can keep us from giving thanks for that tremendous love. It’s not a great Easter basket or lilies He gives us as an Easter gift. It’s eter-nal life that God, who is Love Himself, offers us!

And it can be no coincidence that John Paul II, a man of courage, who stared down evil on a global scale gave us this gift from God of Divine Mercy Sunday. We, too, have the opportunity to do the same. In God’s great mercy, He gives us power in prayer. Some of the great saints asked bold things of the Lord. God knows who He is and what He’s about and He wants us to, too! He wants us to know who He is and who we are in Him as Chris-tians, our greatest identity. So pray the Divine Mercy chaplet (thedivinemercy.org and other sites can help!) for an end to coronavirus and all evil and for the conversion of the greatest sinners, and to end all the evil and lukewarmness of faith in our own hearts. We can have a very powerful Divine Mercy Sunday even without stepping foot into a church.

With love and prayers, Fr. Francis

    Prayers to the Virgin

    Mary for Protection

O Mary, you shine continuously on our journey as a sign of salvation and hope. We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick.

At the foot of the Cross you participated

in Jesus’ pain, with steadfast faith.

You, Our Lady of New York, know what we need.

We are certain that you will provide, so that, as you did at Cana of Galilee, joy and feasting might return after this moment of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform ourselves to the Father’s will and to do what Jesus tells us: He who took our sufferings upon Himself, and bore our sorrows to bring us, through the Cross, to the joy of the Resurrection. Amen.

We seek refuge under your protection, O Holy Mother of God. Do not despise our pleas – we who are put to the test – and deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin Amen.

    For the Children

    Sharing the Gospel

The disciples must have been very surprised when they saw Jesus alive again. They got to see him, listen to him, and touch him. We don't get to see him like the disciples did after Easter. But Jesus calls us blessed when we believe in him. One day we'll see him again in heaven.

    Prayer

Jesus, I can hardly wait to see you in heaven.

    Something to Draw

Draw a picture of Jesus smiling at you from heaven.

    Mission for the Week

Tell a friend why Jesus is special to you.
