Thoughts From Fr. Tom,
Today’s Gospel tells the story of the ten lepers being cleansed by Jesus. The lepers were considered outcasts and had to live separate from others. They trusted in the healing Jesus could bring and they followed his instructions to go show yourselves to the priests so they could once again belong. But the story goes further when one of the lepers, a Samaritan, returns to thank Jesus. He was an outcast as both a leper and a foreigner. Yet, Jesus singles him out for his gratitude and his faith. We separate ourselves from the community when we choose to sin and turn away from God. But we do not have to remain outcasts because of the healing Jesus brings to our lives. With faith, we always have reason to be grateful. For what do we need to be grateful today? In what ways can we share Christ’s healing with others? Next weekend, October 15-16, the Diocese has asked us to kick-off the Diocesan Annual Catholic Appeal (ACA) in our parish. The ACA helps support various ministries in our diocese, including outreach ministries, faith formation, and all the programs admin-istered by the diocese. The ACA also directly benefits the parishes of our diocese through the services we receive throughout the year. Bishop Johnston is doing a great job of making a stronger connection between the diocese and parishes. We are all asked to prayerfully consider making a contribution in support of the ACA. The kick-off next weekend will include a video from Bishop Johnston that we have been asked to show at all the Masses. There will also be financial pledge cards in the pews that can be filled out at your convenience. All registered households should also receive a detailed mailing from the diocese explaining the needs, the total goal, and how funds will be dispersed. You can send in your pledge directly to the diocese or we can forward it for you. Each parish has also been given a contribution goal so please help us reach ours by supporting the work of the diocese through the ACA. Your generosity is appreciated. A quick update on our Future Projects. The new speaker system and upgrade to our sound system is scheduled to begin the week of October 17. If all goes as planned, the project will be completed by the end of that week. As far as the parking lot projects by the Ear-ly Childhood Center, the city asked us to make several revisions to the project but those have been submitted and approved. The revisions have increased the cost a little but we will still be able to move forward. We are working with the contractor and hoping for a mid-October start date. Thank you again for your contribu-tions to the Future Projects Fund which makes it possi-ble for us to complete these projects. Many Blessings!

Our parish will support the 2017 ACA the weekend of October 15-16. Bishop Johnston’s video will be shown at all Masses to enable our faith community to gain a deeper understanding of his hope for our Diocese.
In addition, financial pledge cards will be available in the pews and at Divine Donuts after Masses. We ask every parish family to prayerfully consider a gift of 1% of their income to support the ACA. Together, with your generosity and belief in God’s word, we can make a difference for our Diocese.

Children’s Liturgy of the Word is an age-appropriate Liturgy of the Word offered for children in Kindergarten through Third Grade during Mass. No registration is

Just before the Liturgy of the Word begins at Mass, the children are invited to go with the Children’s Liturgy Leaders from the church to the Mulligan Room. As a volunteer, you would process out with the children and during this special time, lead them through prayers, songs and readings that are
simplified for children. All materials are provided. For more information or to volunteer, contact Diana Hennessey in the Children’s Faith Formation Office, [email protected] or 251-1146.

Golf Tournament Committee Co-Chairs, Dr. Robert Reddig and Mrs. Katie Reddig, as well as committee members and the many volunteers needed to make this event run smoothly! We would also like to thank the wonderful sponsors, OLP’s Panther Partners, and donors for their generous contributions. Finally, thank you to all the golfers for your participation, sportsmanship, and support of our school. Queridos Hermanos y Hermanas:

THE YEAR OF MERCY Catholic Relief Services brings mercy to the world Often we aren’t sure how to respond to the many disasters in our world. Catholic Relief Services carries out the commitment of the Bishops of the United States to assist the poor and vulnerable overseas. CRS responds to major emergencies, fighting disease and poverty, and nurturing peace-ful and just societies. As part of the universal mission of the Catholic Church, we work with local, national and interna-tional Catholic institutions and structures, as well as other organizations, to assist people on the basis of need, not creed, race or nationality. During this Year of Mercy, they offer this prayer for mercy in the world:
Vessels of Mercy
God of Mercy, As you have forgiven us So you send us forth to bear your message
of mercy to all.
Give us willing feet and gentle hands. Bless us with listening ears and searching eyes.
Endow us with understanding minds. Ordain us with compassionate hearts.
In our acts and in our words make us vessels of your mercy to reach out to the
broken on behalf of the Father who wipes away our debts as lovingly as he wipes
away our tears and calls his children home.
Help us lift your people in body and spirit. And so make every year a year of mercy.
Amen.
