FROM THE DEACON’S CHAIR Dear Parishioners,

Given that the Angel Priests, Opus Sanctorum Angelorum (Work of the Holy Angles), are coming to us again, this time at Holy Rosary, I thought we would revisit the topic of Angels.

The title angel, which means a messenger, refers more to their office than to what they are, pure spirits with intellect and free will. We are told that about Lucifer (whose name means Light Bearer) who was entrusted by God with details of his divine plan, but through the sin of pride, rebelled against God taking with him a third of the angles and were cast out of heaven. The fact that Jesus, the Second Person of the Holy Trinity, became man infuriated Satan because God wished to become a man and thus elevate man above the angels.

Angels have irrevocable will. This means when Lucifer and his colleagues chose to go against the will of God, they sinned and could never seek forgiveness or redemption due to their nature and their intimate knowledge of God. Adam and Eve did not have that full understanding of God and only knew God when he called to them in the garden. When they sinned they were capable of repentance.

Most of the angels remained obedient to God. St. Thomas Aquinas, a great doctor of the Church, describes nine choirs or groupings of angels in his book Summa Theologica, which is bases on Sacred Scripture and Sacred Tradition. Below is

a list –as best as humans can comprehend – outlining from the highest (nearest to God) to the lowest (nearest to humanity) and a biblical reference:

Seraphaim (Isaiah 6:2) Cherubim (Genesis 3:24) Thrones (Colossians 1:16) Dominions (Colossians 1:16) Virtues or Authorities (Ephesians 1:21) Powers (1 Peter 3:22 & Colossians 1:16) Principalities (Romans 8:28 & Colossians 1:16) Archangels (1 Thessalonians 4:16) Angels (Romans 8:38)

Guardian Angels are commanded to watch over us and guard us in a special way in the Gospel of St. Matthew (18:10): “See that you do not despise one of these little ones; for I tell you that in heaven their angels always behold the face of my Father who is in heaven.”

We know of only three names of angels, the Archangels: Michael, Gabriel, Raphael. Each one has their own purpose before God. We are encourage to pray to our guardian angel for their intercession. There are prayers to St. Gabriel and St Raphael as well as the prayer to St. Michael, litanies to the holy anglels, and the Chaplet of St. Michael that honors him and the nine choirs of angels. Pray often to the angels because they stand adoringly in God's presence always praying for us.

In the peace of Christ, Deacon Mike Teskey

NOTES FROM THE PRINCIPAL

As I reflect on the parish's 125th an-niversary this weekend, I think of the strong partnership between Holy Rosary Church and school. Did you know that the school's very first class was held in 1891 in the choir loft? It was led by Mr. Stellbrink, the church organist. What a rich and fantastic history of Catholic faith and education we cele-brate this weekend. Happy 125th, Holy Rosary Parish!
