Prayer of Pope Francis for Protection and Help

O Mary, you always shine on our path as a sign of salvation and of hope.

We entrust ourselves to you, Health of the Sick, who at the cross took part in Jesus’ pain, keeping your faith firm.

You…know what we need, and we are sure you will provide so that, as in Cana of Galilee, we may return to joy and to feasting after this time of trial.

Help us, Mother of Divine Love, to conform to the will of the Father and to do as we are told by Jesus, who has taken upon himself our sufferings and carried our sorrows to lead us, through the cross, to the joy of the resurrection. Amen.

Under your protection, we seek refuge, Holy Mother of God. Do not disdain the entreaties of those of us who are in trial, but deliver us from every danger, O glorious and blessed Virgin.

Online Giving Will Help Sustain Our Church

Meeting your giving goal will help support our church’s many ministries dedicated to strengthening our church’s community and community at large.

Online Giving allows you to make donations, payments and pledges via your smart device or computer to our church. Search the App Stores for Online Giving or go to www.OLGapp.com and register with our parish.

Set up your gift today or consider an additional gift via our website on your smart device. Visit www.holyangelsrc.org and click on the “Donate” tab to make a one-time or recurring donation.

For parishioners who want to avoid credit card and bank transaction fees, we strongly encourage the free bank bill-payment services that many local banks offer. For example, both Bank of America and Chase offer Bill Pay services that allow the account owner to set up a weekly automatic payment via check in a set amount to the parish. This paper check is then mailed by the bank to the parish on the date the account holder sets. This works very well and is easy for most parishioners to set up and use.

On April 15, 2020, the Holy Father, Pope Francis, accepted the resigna on of Bishop Serratelli, who has faithfully served our diocese for sixteen years, and appointed Father Kevin J. Sweeney, Priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn, to serve as our eighth bishop. Born January 17, 1970, the son of Irish immigrants, his mother arriving in the United States in 1951 and his father in 1970, and ordained June 28, 1997, Bishop-Elect Sweeney is the Pastor of Saint Michael Church, in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. During these days before his ordina on and installa on as Bishop of Paterson, we keep Bishop-Elect Sweeney in our prayers and ask for an outpouring of the grace and power of the Holy Spirit upon him. A date has not yet been set for his ordina on and installa on because of the current crisis. The Holy Father has appointed Bishop Serratelli to serve as Apostolic Administrator un l the installa on of our new bishop. We thank God for the ministry of Bishop Serratelli and we look forward to welcoming our new Bishop in person.

Today we hear one of the most beau ful gospel readings of the Easter Season. The disciples, filled with fear, are locked away trying to keep away those they believed might harm them because of their faith in the Lord Jesus. In the midst of that fear, “Jesus came and stood in their midst and said to them, ‘Peace be with you’” (John 20:19). Pope Saint John Paul II designated this Second Sunday of Easter as the Sunday of Divine Mercy. Having conquered sin and death, Jesus shares his presence once again with the disciples and he reveals to them his life giving mercy.

Here is the joy of Easter, the Lord stands in our midst and offers us the gi of peace – a gi that only he can give. Jesus stands among the disciples and stands with us as well but not just to give us a feeling of peace and contentment. The Lord charges the first disciples and us as well to be his messengers and to do his work in the world. There is urgency to the message that Jesus speaks to the disciples: “As the Father has sent me, so I send you” (20:21). The disciples did take the message of the Risen Christ in their midst and preached it to every corner of the word. Pope Francis spoke of the joy of Easter:

The Church throughout the world echoes the angel’s message to the women: ‘Do

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 3)

not be afraid! I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised. Come; see the place where he lay’ (Mt 28:5-6).

This is the culmina on of the Gospel, it is the Good News par excellence: Jesus, who was crucified, is risen! This event is the basis of our faith and our hope. If Christ were not raised, Chris anity would lose its very meaning; the whole mission of the Church would lose its impulse, for this is the point from which it first set out and con nues to set out ever anew. The message which Chris ans bring to the world is this: Jesus, Love incarnate, died on the cross for our sins, but God the Father raised him and made him the Lord of life and death. In Jesus, love has triumphed over hatred, mercy over sinfulness, goodness over evil, truth over falsehood, life over death.

That is why we tell everyone: ‘Come and see!’ In every human situa on, marked by frailty, sin and death, the Good News is no mere ma er of words, but a tes mony to uncondi onal and faithful love: it is about leaving ourselves behind and encountering others, being close to those crushed by life’s troubles, sharing with the needy, standing at the side of the sick, elderly and the outcast, ‘Come and see!’ Love is more powerful, love gives life, love makes hope blossom in the wilderness.

With this joyful certainty in our hearts, today we turn to you, risen Lord!

In the midst of this sending of the disciples by the Risen Lord we meet the figure of Thomas “called Didymus, one of the Twelve” (20:24). Thomas is not present when the Risen Lord appears to the other disciples and so the disciples naturally want to share the news of the presence of the Risen Jesus among them with Thomas, one of their own: “We have seen the Lord” (20:25). But Thomas does not accept the message, he doubts: “Unless I see the mark of the nails in his hands and put my finger into the nailmarks and put my hand into his side, I will not believe” (20:25). Perhaps Thomas was so shaken by the death of Jesus on the cross that he could not imagine that Jesus would rise from the dead. Thomas wants to have assurance that Jesus is really risen before he places faith in this message that he has heard from the other disciples.

And so a week passes and the disciples are once again indoors; it would seem that the message and appearance of the Risen Lord has yet to calm all of their fears. And so Jesus appears to them once again: “Jesus came, although the doors were locked, and stood in their midst and said, ‘Peace be with you’” (20:26). Jesus does not give up on the disciples and he is not deterred by Thomas’ apparent lack of faith: “Then he said to Thomas, ‘Put your finger here and see my hands, and bring your hand and put it into my side, and do not be

unbelieving, but believe’” (20:27). Jesus is telling the disciples to accept this gi of new life and freedom from sin that he has won for them through his death and resurrec on. Finally, Thomas is moved to faith: “Thomas answered and said to him, ‘My Lord and my God!’” (20:28). Jesus does not chas se Thomas for his lack of faith, for his need to touch the physical wounds of Jesus, he does not praise him either but he does single out for special men on those “who have not seen and have believed” (20:29). That is us.

We have the gi of faith in the Lord Jesus and we share that faith with others through our faithful living of the Gospel message. Jesus conquered sin and death and calls us to personal friendship, communion with him: “that through this belief you may have life in his name” (20:31). During the Easter season we celebrate this gi of newness of life that we receive through the Lord Jesus and we recommit ourselves to being his messengers to others. The gi of our faith in the Lord is not a treasure that we keep locked away rather it is a gi that we want to give to others as a gi . We celebrate this Easter season with joy and we pray for an increase of faith, hope, and love so that we might be faithful followers of the Lord.

In these difficult days we can some mes wonder where the presence of God is. Why doesn’t God act to end these days of suffering for so many who are ill, for their families, and for so many caregivers, doctors, nurses, first responders, who labor so relessly to care for them. We do not have a good explana on for sickness and suffering. But what we do know is that God’s presence is always with us. We are certain that Jesus con nues to pour forth the healing rays of his heart which are mercy and love. We thank God that so many receive the gi of peace from the Lord and share that peace with others. In that way, the joy of Easter brings Christ Light into places that would otherwise be covered with darkness. Today we offer a prayer for the Sunday of Divine Mercy:

Eternal God, in whom mercy is endless and the treasury of compassion — inexhaus ble, look kindly upon us and increase Your mercy in us, that in difficult moments we might not despair nor become despondent, but with great confidence submit ourselves to Your holy will, which is Love and Mercy itself. Amen.

I do not like to turn to subjects that will only add to your concerns as we pass through this dark valley. I ask however, that you please do as much as you are able to in maintaining your generous support of our parish.

In order for us to maintain at least a minimal staff, and keep the lights on, we require a weekly income. You can make contribu ons through your own bank through their bill pay

op ons, through online giving at www.OLGapp.com, or through our parish website: www.holyangelsrc.org. Thank you for your generosity.

Financial concerns are one concern but certainly not the most important or the only one. The first concern is always you and your families. Please know that during these days I remember you and your families each day at private Mass. It is reassuring to celebrate Mass, even when no other person is present, because in the confines of the quiet church, the song of the angels reverberates in the silence and is our promise of deliverance from these hardships: “Holy, holy, holy Lord God of host. Heaven and earth are full of your glory.” Our parish dedicated to the Our Lady of the Holy Angels relies on the powerful intercession of our Blessed Mother and her band of angels to see us through this storm. I have no doubt that she will and that the angels will guide our steps.

I pray that this me of constant apprehension and confusion will soon pass. In the mean me, we rely upon the protec on of the angels, and I commend to the care of the Blessed Virgin Mary as I ask God’s blessing upon you and your families.

God bless you and your families.

Sincerely in Christ,

Monsignor T. Mark Condon Pastor
