My Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Msgr. T. Mark Condon

T F S E “I ”

W D P V    This Fourth Sunday of Easter, Saint John’s Gospel gives us the words of Jesus in which he describes himself as the Good Shepherd. The Lord Jesus stresses his close rela onship with each of us who are his followers: “I am the good shepherd. A good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep” (John 10:11). Jesus is the one who leads by example. Just as he sacrifices himself for our redemp on, his disciples are called to live his way of other centered living.

The Lord Jesus does not observe our human experience from afar, making considera on of whether or not we are worth the cost of the shedding of his blood. The Lord enters completely into our human experience and shares everything we do: love, betrayal, hunger, disappointment, the company of friends, and the loss of those who are dear to him. Jesus knows what it is to be disappointed by those whom he loves and yet he con nues to love them to the end. The Lord never gives up on us. The Lord Jesus is completely human and completely God – by sharing our humanity he raises our human experience to the heights of the divine. As the Lord Jesus is always our Good Shepherd, guiding us along the right path, keeping us from harm’s way, so too are we challenged to shepherd one another with love, compassion, and mercy.

There are undoubtedly moments in our lives when we feel lost, or alone, or heartbroken, or le with feelings that are confused and a muddle – our future and our choices might seem uncertain at best. In those moments we should take not only comfort, but strength, in knowing that the Good Shepherd, Jesus Christ, leads and guides us – as we listen for the sound of his voice for guidance, he knows the sound of our voices as well and already knows what is in our hearts. The Lord Jesus tells us: “I am the good shepherd, and I know mine and mine know me, just as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I will lay down my life for the sheep” (10:14-15). Jesus lays down his own life for us and it is the supreme act of love that redeems us and gives access to eternal life and communion with the Father in the power of the Holy Spirit. Jesus follows the will of the Father and we must follow the voice of our Good Shepherd who reveals the Father’s will to us. We are the Lord’s followers and we must go where he sends us with confidence that he will give us the strength to accomplish the work that he gives us to accomplish in his name. We have a shepherd who is strong and wise, and ready to do ba le for those he has gathered to himself: “This is why the Father loves me, because I lay down my life in order to take it up again. No one takes it from me, but I lay it down again on my own” (10:17-18). We pray for the grace always to live in imita on of the Good Shepherd who calls us to eternal life. On this Sunday when we rejoice in the presence of the Good Shepherd in our midst in the person of the risen Lord, we also pray for an increase of voca ons to the priesthood, diaconate, and to the consecrated life, and for a strengthening of the call to married life. We are all called to a voca on given us by God himself. We pray that the Church will con nue to increase in voca ons to the priesthood and the religious life so that many young people are willing to give their lives over to life-long service of God’s holy people. The privilege to serve as a priest is a gi from God that all of us who exercise the sacred ministry in the Lord’s name daily pray for the strength and wisdom we need to faithfully carry it out. This Sunday is a day when we must consecrate ourselves for praying, especially, for voca ons to the priesthood so that the Church never goes without the gi of the Eucharist which sustains her and strengthens her for building up God’s kingdom on earth. In his message for a World Day of Prayer for Voca ons, our Holy Father, Pope Francis wrote:

To offer one’s life in mission is possible only if we are able to leave ourselves behind. On this 52nd World Day of Prayer for Voca ons, I would like to reflect on that par cular ‘exodus’ which is the heart of voca on, or be er yet, of our response to the voca on God gives us. When we hear the word ‘exodus,’ we immediately think of the origins of the amazing love story between God and his people, a history which passes through the drama c period of slavery in Egypt, the calling of Moses, the experience of libera on and the journey toward the Promised Land. The Book of Exodus, the second book of the Bible, which recounts these events, is a parable of the en re history of salva on, but also of the inner workings of Chris an faith. Passing from the slavery of the old Adam to new life in Christ is an event of redemp on which takes place through faith (Eph 4:22-24). This passover is a

Pastor’s Message (...continued from Page 4)

genuine ‘exodus;’ it is the journey of each Chris an soul and the en re Church, the decisive turning of our lives towards the Father. At the root of every Chris an voca on we find this basic movement, which is part of the experience of faith. Belief means transcending ourselves, leaving behind our comfort and the inflexibility of our ego in order to center our life in Jesus Christ. It means leaving, like Abraham, our na ve place and going forward with trust, knowing that God will show us the way to a new land. This ‘going forward’ is not to be viewed as a sign of contempt for one’s life, one’s feelings, one’s own humanity. On the contrary, those who set out to follow Christ find life in abundance by pu ng themselves completely at the service of God and his kingdom. Jesus says: ‘Everyone who has le home or brothers or sisters or father or mother or children or lands, for my name’s sake, will receive a hundredfold, and inherit eternal life’ (Mt 19:29). All of this is profoundly rooted in love. The Chris an voca on is first and foremost a call to love, a love which a racts us and draws us out of ourselves, ‘decentering’ us and triggering ‘an ongoing exodus out of the closed inward-looking self towards its libera on through self-giving, and thus towards authen c self-discovery and indeed the discovery of God’ (Deus Caritas Est, 6).

We pray for an increase of voca ons so that the work of the Good Shepherd will con nue in the priesthood. May the Good Shepherd strengthen all voca ons in the Church so that the gi s of faith, hope, and love are known through our own example.

Faith Formation Corner

Attention 2nd Grade Parents: As weekly mass is an integral part of our lives as Catholics, it is important that our children attend weekly mass. This is especially important as they prepare for the Sacrament of First Eucharist and equally important after they receive their Sacrament. While our parish offers many masses during each weekend for us to attend, during the next several weeks, we require that all children who will soon receive the Sacrament of First Eucharist, attend the Sunday 9:30 AM mass together as a group. Attending mass together shall begin on Sunday, February 25, 2018 and continue through each of the remaining weekends of preparation.

These dates that your children will be attending 9:30 AM mass together are as follows:

4/22, 4/29

We require at least one parent or guardian to accompany and stay with the child during Mass. When you arrive, please sign the attendance form that will be located at the front and rear entrances of the church. After Mass please bring your child to their respective classroom for their weekly instruction.

Thank you for your cooperation and support. We Are STILL in NEED of Catechists! Our ability to provide effective programming for so many of our children enrolled in our program is only made possible if we have enough volunteers to serve as catechists. Please carefully review the information in the registration letter with regard to our need for Catechists and return the Catechist Volunteer Form that was enclosed in the registration packet to the ministry center ASAP. If you would like more detailed information about becoming a catechist, please contact Trish at [email protected] or leave a message at the Parish Ministry Center 973-256-5200.

The Fisherman’s Bride Book Signing Award-winning author and parishioner Catherine Magia will be discussing her book The Fisherman’s Bride: Untold Story of the Wife of Simon Peter this Sunday, April 22nd at 2:30 PM in St. Francis Hall.

Catherine has belonged to Holy Angels parish since the age of eight.

This is the story of the nameless wife of the man who would become St. Peter, the first Apostle. It is the story of a woman’s struggle with economic hard times, her husband’s restlessness, and

oppression of the Roman Empire over her people. Then her life is changed when her mother is saved by a miracle — by a carpenter who speaks with understanding and acts with compassion. A man who can inspire the extraordinary.

Catherine will be available to sign books after the presentation.

Volunteers Needed St. Vincent’s Nursing Home & Rehab Center is set quietly away on E. Lindsley Road in Cedar Grove. The setting is a fitting atmosphere to care for wonderful human beings who are in need of assistance in their daily lives. The excellent rehabilitation program offers therapy to restore quality of life to those who have suffered a stroke or physical injury.

In addition to the employees of St. Vincent’s, the lives of the residents are touched by the kindness of volunteers. These generous and caring people transport residents back and forth to Mass and to a myriad of activities. In some cases, a volunteer may be someone’s sole visitor. Volunteers allow a resident to communicate and laugh with others, be present for special musical activities, play bingo or create a handmade poncho or an individual flower garden. In order to make these wonderful opportunities available to residents, volunteers are necessary to transport an individual and chat along the way.

If you are interested, please call Sr. June at 973-754-4831. You will never dream of how important you can be to others.
