St. Mary Magdalene Mary Magdalene, sometimes called simply the Magdalene or the Madeleine, was a Jewish woman who, according to the four canonical gospels, traveled with Jesus as one of his followers and was a witness to his crucifixion, burial, and resurrection. She is mentioned by name twelve times in the canonical gospels, more than most of the apostles. Mary's epithet Magdalene most likely means that she came from the town of Magdala, a fishing town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee.

St. Bridget of Sweden; born as Birgitta Birgersdotter, also Birgitta of Vadstena, or Saint Birgitta, was a mystic and saint, and founder of the Bridgettines nuns and monks after the death of her husband of twenty years. Outside of Sweden, she was also known as the Princess of Nericia and was the mother of Catherine of Vadstena. She is one of the six patron saints of Europe, together with Benedict of Nursia, Saints Cyril and Methodius, Catherine of Siena and Edith Stein.

St. Sharbel Makhluf Mar Charbel Makhlouf, O.L.M., was a Maronite monk and priest from Lebanon. During his life he obtained a wide reputation for holiness and he has been canonized by the Catholic Church. He is known among Lebanese Christians for his miraculous healings in answer to prayers said at his tomb, located at the Monastery of St. Maron, and for his ability to unite Christians and Muslims.

SS. Joachim and Anne , are the parents of the Virgin Mary. There are no mentions of them in the Bible or Gospels. What we know comes from Catholic legend and the Gospel of James, which is unsanctioned. Even the early Church fathers expressed skepticism about the Gospel of James in their writings. but tell the same story, that Mary was promised to Joachim and Anne by an angel, was consecrated to God, and she remained a virgin all her life. Mary had good, faithful parents who raised her with a love and devotion to God like none other except Jesus Christ Himself. Joachim and Anne serve as role models for parents and both deserve to be honored and emulated for their devotion to God and Our Lady Mary, the Mother of God.

St. James, son of Zebedee, was one of the Twelve Apostles of Jesus, traditionally considered the first apostle to be martyred.

Ladies, it would be greatly appreciated if you would blot your lipstick before drinking from the chalice. The stain of some lipsticks is very diffi-cult to remove from the altar linens.

BREAKFAST

The Knights of Columbus will be hosting a parish breakfast today, Sunday, July 21, from 8:00 am until 12 noon, in the OLA Hall.

CENACLE ROSARIES

The Cenacle Rosaries and Chaplet of Divine Mercy for peace and ending of the culture of death are prayed each Sunday from 1:30 to 2:30 pm in the church chapel. All are welcome to come and pray.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY REFLECTION July 21, 2019

Martha’s hospitality was made edgy because of her becoming burdened with the cooking and serving. Martha is settling to be a servant where Jesus is looking for disciples. Mary’s hospitality was gracious because she focused her attention on Jesus: “she sat beside the Lord at his feet listening to him speak.” The surprise is that Jesus affirms that the “better part” is to sit and listen - both

metaphors for discipleship. The “better part” is to be a disciple! Before we can carry on the mission of Jesus as disciples we must become disciples by sitting at the feet of Jesus listening to him. Practically speaking, this means being attentive to the Scriptures during Mass. It also means taking the time to be with Jesus in

prayer - not just saying prayers, but being quiet and listening to how Jesus speaks to our hearts. (Living Liturgy, p.176)

OLA’S GOOD SHEPHERD MINISTRY Casserole cooking is a simple way to give of your time and talent. This ministry provides

LITURGY CORNER

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION There’s a different pace to a summer Sunday, especially on those days when we dream of air conditioning and wave any available paper to stir the air. Yet we persist in gathering, even with so many breaks from the usual routines. We distance ourselves not only from routines, but from schedules and familiar well-worn paths. These are playful days and contemplative days. We see long-lost friends and visit almost-forgotten places. We have more leisure than any people before in the history of the world, and we need it because our lives are so care-worn and tiring. More of us walk barefoot and look up at the stars or dip our toes in the lake or sea, sing around campfires, read novels on the beach, and eat comfort food with our fingers. We see how beautiful life can be, and are more aware than usual of how God is always breaking in with signs of love. In Genesis today, Abraham and Sarah practice hospitality to their visitors, who turn out to be God dropping in. During the summer months, God practices hospitality in return, inviting us into a season of celebration. Keeping Sunday holy is a good habit to cultivate in these days when our spirits are especially receptive to God’s deep desire for us to know divine love.

A MINDSET OF SERVICE There’s a lot of traveling, delivering, and visiting going on in our readings today. In Genesis Abraham cares for the needs of three mysterious travelers. The psalm responds, celebrating the kind of righteousness that Abraham practices. Then, in his letter to the Colossians, Saint Paul describes his own ministry as almost like a delivery service: he, God’s steward, brings the word of God to their community. Finally, Luke’s Gospel shares the well-known story of Mary and Martha, and the different ways they welcome Jesus into their home. Amid all this coming and going, we are invited to pay attention to the ways we tend to the needs of others. Each of us can ask, How am I present to God and others in my life?

HOSPITALITY Christians should offer their brethren simple and unpretentious hospitality. —St. Basil
