God’s ways are trustworthy 2 Today’s Readings: Is 55:6-9; Ps 145:2-3, 8-9, 17-18; Phil 1:20C-24, 27A; Matt 20:1-16A

In our First Reading from the Book of Isaiah, God reminds us that He does not think in the same way that we do. “For my thoughts are not your thoughts.” That is quite clear in our Gospel today from Matthew, which relates the Parable of the Workers in the Vineyard.

In the Gospel parable, God (who is represented by the landown-er ) does something which from our human perspective may seem unfair and unjust. What we must keep in mind is that the landowner did not treat anyone unfairly. He may have seemed more generous to some than to others, but again that is from our perspective.

We can be absolutely certain that God will never be unfair to us. The Lord may bestow greater blessings on others, some of whom again from our perspective may seem less de-serving. God is a righteous God. Through stewardship we acknowledge that everything comes to us from God. All our blessings may seem to be more or less than we deserve, but if we are grateful for what we have and what we are, we will then recognize God’s generos-ity and His grace.

The important thing to us should not be and cannot be whether we are first or last. What is central is that we are part of the Kingdom of God. That should be sufficient for us. We get into trouble when we conclude that God should think the way we do.

Pick up the brochure

Welcoming the Refugee and Migrant “Fear of the stranger and a desire to protect one’s own family or

community from the unknown are ingrained in human behavior,” begins the new brochure published by Catholic News Service, now available in the church vestibule and the parish office.

“From ancient times till today there is also the impulse to ex-tend hospitality and protection to those who are displaced, home-less or in great need. The Catholic Church is consistent and forth-right in support of migrants and refugees, calling all the faithful to welcome and protect them.”

The brochure includes teaching from Scripture, the history of migration, ways that we can help, and a prayer for our country. Pick up your copy today and share it with a friend!

Time to support Walk for the Hungry

Support our “celebrity walkers” by placing your name on sponsor sheets on the patio beginning this weekend. Sign up as a walker yourself and ask family and friends to support you. Among local faith communities, OLA fields the largest contingent of walkers.

Save the date of Saturday, Oct. 14, for the 44th Annual Walk for the Hungry, hosted by Inland Valley Hope Partners. The event has changed to a Saturday and begins at 10 a.m. to reduce problems with the hot weather and stressed walkers.

This year’s walk will include a farmer’s market showcase, a food drive, free popcorn and family fun. For details, visit the website inlandvalleyhopepartners.org.

The latest session of our stra-tegic planning process identified five Core Values which declare what matters most, shape the cul-ture at OLA, clarify our expecta-tions and guide our mission.

OLA’s Core Values are Spirituality Integrity Discipleship Life-long Learning Fellowship/Community Spirituality places God at the center of our live and celebrates our Catholic identity in a

commitment to prayer and communal worship, peace and lovingkindness. Integrity means being committed to the highest standards of accountability and transparency in our financial administration and leadership development. Discipleship is following Jesus in our commit-ment to the poor, ministry to families, and evangelization to the community through generous giving and a well-mobilized lay leadership. Life-long Learning means a commitment to the teaching of Catholic principles to all ages in a way that shapes their values and guides their actions. Fellowship/Community is placing a priority on hospitality, a welcoming environ-ment and personal relationships within our culturally-diverse parish and school.
