“After sunset, as evening drew on, they brought Him all who were ill, and those possessed by demons. Before long the whole

town was gathered outside the door.” —Mark 1:32-33

Job faced reality head on and declared: “Life on earth” is “a drudgery” (Jb 7:1). He described life as being “assigned months of misery” (Jb 7:3). Nights are long; days are short (Jb 7:4, 6) and, when we reach the end of them, we are without hope (Jb 7:6).

The only Answer to the drudgery of human existence is Jesus. Jesus is the only Hope for humanity, but the only Hope we need. Jesus walks into the typical town filled with suffering, sick, and even demon-possessed people. He both announces the Good News and creates it. He begins by healing a woman with a fever, and before long He’s healed many sick people and driven out countless demons (Mk 1:31-34). It is Good News when Jesus comes to town. He turns a miserable little village into a paradise of health, happiness, and true freedom.

In transforming the village of Simon and Andrew, Jesus began by grasping the hand of Simon’s mother-in-law. A new life and a new town begins with someone putting a hand in Jesus’ hand. This is not just a handshake; it is expressing a total commitment to Jesus. We let go of everything we are holding on to for meaning and hope in life, and we hold on to Jesus, and only Jesus, for dear life. Then the Good News for ourselves and our town begins.

“Al atardecer, después de ponerse el sol, le llevaron a todos los enfermos y endemoniados, y la ciudad entera se reunió delante de la puerta”

(Marcos 1:32-33).

Job se enfrentó con la realidad y declaró: "La vida en la tierra" es "servidumbre" (Jb 7:1). La pintó como "herencia de meses vacíos" (Jb 7:3), las noches largas y adoloridas, los días cortos, y cuando se acaba, sencillamente llegamos a su fin (ver Jb 7:4-6). La única Respuesta a la servidumbre de la existencia humana es Jesús. Jesús es la única Esperanza para la humanidad y solo la única que necesitamos. Jesús entra al pueblo típico lleno de gente sufrida, enferma, e incluso poseída por demonios. Él anuncia y crea la Buena Nueva. Comienza curando a una mujer con fiebre, y al poco tiempo ha curado a muchos enfermos y expulsado a innumerables demonios (Mc 1:31-34). Es una Buena Nueva cuando Jesús viene a la ciudad. Convierte al pequeño pueblo miserable en un paraíso de salud, felicidad y libertad verdadera. Al transformar el pueblo de Simón y Andrés, Jesús comenzó por tomar la mano de la suegra de Simón. Una vida renovada y el desarrollo de nuevos pueblos comienza con alguien que coloca la mano en la de Jesús. Esto no es solo un apretón; significa compromiso total con Jesús. Our Faith Catechism of the Catholic Church 1501 and 1503 Illness can lead to anguish, self-absorption, sometimes even despair and revolt against God. It can also make a person more mature, helping him discern in his life what is not essential so that he can turn toward that which is. Very often illness provokes a search for God and a return to him. Christ's compassion toward the sick and his many healings of every kind of infirmity are a resplendent sign that "God has visited his people" and that the Kingdom of God is close at hand. Jesus has the power not only to heal, but also to forgive sins; he has come to heal the whole man, soul and body; he is the physician the sick have need of His compassion toward all who suffer goes so far that he identifies himself with them: "I was sick and you visited me." His preferential love for the sick has not ceased through the centuries to draw the very special attention of Christians toward all those who suffer in body and soul. It is the source of tireless efforts to comfort them.

El Señor Jesucristo vino a cada uno de nosotros personalmente. Vino a sanar nuestros corazones heridos y a nuestros cuerpos del pecado; Vino para que no nos desesperemos, sino que confiemos en él. Las lecturas de hoy nos recuerdan esto. En el libro de Job, Job no ve al Señor en su desesperación, pero nunca niega al Señor: "así me han tocado en meses de infortunio". Salmo: Alaben al Señor, que sana los corazones quebrantados. En su primera carta a los Corintios, San Pablo predica el evangelio, para salvar a muchos: “Me he hecho todo a todos, a fin de ganarlos a todos. Todo lo hago por el Evangelio ". En el evangelio según Marcos, Jesús revela su propósito: “Vayamos a los pueblos cercanos para predicar también el Evangelio, pues para eso he venido ".

The Lord Jesus Christ came to each one of us personally. He came to heal our wounded hearts and our bodies from sin; He came so that we would not despair, but trust in Him. The readings today remind us of this. In the book of Job, Job does not see the Lord in his despair, yet he never denies the Lord: “So I have been assigned months of misery.” Psalm: Praise the Lord, who heals the brokenhearted. In his first letter to the Corinthians, St. Paul preaches the gospel, to save many: “I have become all things to all, to save at least some. All this I do for the sake of the gospel.” In the gospel according to Mark, Jesus reveals his purpose: ‘Let us go on to the nearby villages that I may preach there also. For this purpose have I come.”

A slave Arab slave merchants took care, not to clothe her, but to give her a new name. “Bakhita,” they called her, Arabic for “fortunate one,” a horrible joke of a name for the child born in 1869 in a village of Darfur, in South Sudan. She became human merchandise passed from hand to hand in the markets of El Obeid and Khartoum. One day, while serving her master, a Turkish general, she was “tattooed” with 114 strokes of a knife, the wounds covered in salt so that the scars would remain visible. The light Bakhita survived, and one day, a ray of light entered her hell. Callisto Legnami, the Italian Vice-Consul, bought her from some traffickers at Khartoum. Bakhita put on a dress for the first time and entered a house. The door closed behind her on ten years of unspeakable brutality. The respite lasted for two years when the Italian functionary, who treated her kindly, was obliged to return to Italy because of the Mahdist wars in Sudan. Bakhita remembered the moment: “I dared to ask him to take me with him to Italy.” Callisto Legnami agreed, and in 1884, Bakhita landed in the country where an unimagined destiny awaited the former slave. She became the nanny of Alice, the daughter of the Michieli family, who were friends of the Legnamis and lived in Zianigo, near Mirano in the province of Veneto. The “little brown sister” In 1888, the couple she worked for had to leave for Africa, and for nine months, Bakhita and Alice were left in the care of the Canossian Sisters of Venice. Now that her body was clothed, Bakhita began to clothe her soul. She came to know Jesus, learned the faith, and on January 9, 1890 she received the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and First Communion from the Patriarch of Venice, along with the name Josephine Margaret Fortunata (the latter is the Italian translation of the Arabic “Bakhita”). In 1893 she entered the novitiate of the Canossian Sisters. Three years later she professed her vows and spent the following 45 years as the cook, sacristan, and especially, the doorkeeper of the convent at Schio. There she got to know the people of the town and the people in turn learned to appreciate the gentle smile, the goodness and faith of the moretta, the “little brown sister,” while the children wanted to taste this “sister made of chocolate.” “I would kiss their hands…” All Schio was in mourning when Sr. Josephine Bakhita died of pneumonia on February 8, 1947. Her life had truly become “fortunate,” as she said herself: “If I were to meet those men who abducted me, or even those who tortured me, I would kneel and kiss their hands, for it that hadn’t happened, I would not be a Christian and a religious today.”

The little girl had never worn a dress until the day two scowling men appeared in the fields, blocking her path and holding a knife to her side, kidnapping her much as one might snatch a hen from its coop. The day when her life turned into a nightmare, that terrified 9-year-old girl forgot everything, even her name and the names of her parents, with whom she had had a happy life.

Esclava Por ello, los traficantes de esclavos decidieron llamarla "Bakhita", que significa “afortunada”, un nombre atroz que sonaba a burla para aquella pequeña que se había convertido en una mercancía que pasaba de mano en mano en los mercados de El Obeid y Khartoum. Un día, mientras prestaba servicio para un general turco, le hicieron un “tatuaje” grabado a fuego en su piel, con 114 cortes que fueron cubiertos de sal para que la herida cicatrizara con relieve. La Luz Bakhita sobrevive a todo esto y un día un rayo de luz ilumina aquel infierno. St. Josephine Bakhita, you were sold into slavery as a child

and endured untold hardship and suffering. Once liberated from your physical enslavement,

you found true redemption in your encounter with Christ and his Church.

O St. Bakhita, assist all those

who are trapped in a state of slavery; Intercede with God on their behalf

so that they will be released from their chains of captivity.

Those whom man enslaves, let God set free.

Provide comfort to survivors of slavery

and let them look to you as an example of hope and faith.

Help all survivors find healing from their wounds.

We ask for your prayers and intercessions for those enslaved among us.
