STATEMENT BY ARCHBISHOP PETER SMITH
23rd May 2017
Following the events that took place in Manchester Arena yesterday
evening I would like to extend my sincere condolences to all the victims
of this attack, in particular, those traumatised by the unexpected loss of
relatives and friends. There are no words sufficient for the grief of losing
a family member and the devastating nature of this event surely serves
only to increase that pain.
Although nothing can prepare us for such loss, I pray that you will find
consolation in each other, and peace in the knowledge that Christ is there
for all of you at every moment in your lives, no matter what you
face. The Catholic community here offers its prayers for you and your
loved ones today.
At this time, I encourage all people to renew their efforts to nurture
respectful dialogue, with a view to fostering peace and trust in our
communities. The answer is not in violence or arms, but in reaching out to
others, openly discussing differences and endeavouring to forgive past
actions. It is by these measures that we have the opportunity bring about
the light of understanding and avert animosity.
I would like to add my thanks to all those who have already expressed
their gratitude to the emergency services for their swift action and care for
those caught up in this tragedy.
With assurance of my prayers

follow the Mass Order for the day and insert elements of cultural
diversity in some sections. This will be followed by a Reception in
the hall and we invite everyone to give whatever support they can, to
make it a success.
We encourage you to wear your cultural/native attire, bring along
flags from your native country if possible, to be presented during the
offertory, food, etc and provide whatever support you can like setting
up, clearing away etc.
We have put a box on the table at the back of the church for you to
pledge what you will do. Please complete the slips of paper provided
and place in the box.
Please also note that your details will be kept in strict confidence and
would only be used to contact you for future activities. We have also
put a sheet on the wall to sign up for those who prefer this option.

CROYDON CITIZENS ASSEMBLY
Tuesday 30th May 6.45pm - West Croydon Baptist Church
‘Citizens’ is a community based organisation whose members
include churches, mosques, schools and colleges. We organise
actions together about issues that matter to our communities to make
change. This includes supporting refugees, as we did, to get the
young people across from the Calais camps last October and
supporting projects for affordable housing. This Tuesday we are holding our general election assembly and have
invited Gavin Barwell and Sarah Jones. We are asking for their
support on several issues should they be elected. As a citizen of
Croydon this is your chance to have your voice heard and hear what
your representatives have to say on key issues.
If you would like to know more call Anna on 07905 294034
