From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners: Happy Feast Day! Today our parish celebrates its patronal feast, imploring Our Lady of Sorrows to continue to watch over our community and its mission. United to this work of intercession on our behalf is of course the ever faithful Saint Anthony of Padua. It is a prayer of special joy, solemn prayer and community fellowship as we celebrate the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass and also enjoy our annual parish picnic!

Holy Mary, Mother of the Lord, you remained faithful with the disciples fled.

Just as you believed the angel’s incredible message— that you would become the Mother of the Most High,

so too you believed at the hour of his greatest abasement. In this way, at the hour of the Cross,

at the hour of the world’s darkest night, you became the Mother of all believers,

the Mother of the Church. We beg you: teach us to believe,

and grant that our faith may bear fruit in courageous service

and be the sign of a love ever ready to share suffering and to offer assistance.

Pope Benedict XVI With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Catechetical Sunday—September 17

Today we celebrate Catechetical Sunday and impart a special blessing to our catechists as they begin a new year. How grateful we are that so many of our parishioners devote themselves to this important ministry of the Church—to share the faith with our young members. The 2017 Catechetical Sunday theme is Living as Missionary Disciples. Catechetical Sunday is an opportunity for all to rededicate themselves to this mission as a community of faith.

(Rain date/time: 6 p.m. on Thursday, October 5). All parishioners are invited to bring their pets to the Peace Garden at Our Lady of Sorrows (outside, to the left of the Lower Church Hall doors) for this special blessing. As Fr. Kevin E. Have You Enrolled Your Preschooler

or Kindergartener in "Cherubs?"

What is Cherubs? Cherubs is the name of our early childhood religious education program for three-, four-, and five-year-olds.

When are classes? Cherubs sessions are held on Sunday mornings from 9:30 to 10:30 from October to May.

Where are the classes held? Cherubs classes are held in the parish elementary school building in ‘age appropriate’ classroom settings.

What about class size? Cherubs class sizes are usually small (8-12 children) so learning opportunities are optimal.

Why send my child to this program? Children who attend early childhood religious education classes are better prepared to begin formal religious education classes in first grade. During Cherubs classes, the children are introduced to Scripture stories, songs, prayers, and practices, as well as fun-filled, faith-filled crafts and activities.

Where do I sign my child up? The Religious Education Office of the Parish has all the details. Please call 587-4372 to obtain registration forms or download them from www.ols-sa.org.

Weekly OLS School News It has been a terrific 2nd week of school! As we began our first full week of classes, you could feel the enthusiasm and energy in the building. The students look terrific in their updated school uniforms, and everyone is settling into the school routine. Our preschool students have been outstanding examples of the joy we feel in the building. They are always excited to take a walk in the building, and their classroom activities show how much fun learning can be! The kindergarten students have already learned how to walk quietly in the hall, how to work in their groups and take turns at their tables, and what cool things they can learn in computer, PE, Art, and Spanish can be! The picture below shows the 2nd grade identifying and searching for vocabulary new vocabulary words—and it is impressive to see them succeed so quickly.

With the beautiful weather the students were able to get outside at recess and enjoy our playground and fields. The 6th graders really know how to play soccer, and the 8th grade boys demonstrated their basketball skills on a daily basis. Take a look at the picture and you can see their determination!

We ended the week with our first school mass honoring our Patroness, Our Lady of Sorrows. It was a beautiful tribute to Mary, led by the 8th grade class and their homeroom teacher, Mrs. Emde. This mass is always a joyous way to begin the school year. Next week we will begin our Friday weekly mass at 8:15 a.m. Please feel free to join us as we gather to worship as a school and parish community.

Peace and blessings, Mrs. Maureen Tuohy, Principal

The OLS-SA Reading Group will be reading Scott Hahn’s Consuming the Word for our first

book of the new academic year. Why not join us in our study of this important book on one of the major foundations of our faith. The group will meet every other Thursday night at 7:00 in the Church Library beginning on September 21. Fatima Centennial The Gift of a Plenary Indulgence

Pope Francis has granted the faithful the opportunity to obtain a plenary indulgence* during the centennial celebration the Fatima apparitions. There are 3 ways to obtain the plenary indulgence: 1. Make a pilgrimage to the Fatima Shrine in Portugal. 2. Visit any church where the image of Our Lady of Fatima is exposed on the days of the anniversary of the apparitions, the 13th of each month from May through October 2017. 3. The elderly and infirm may unite themselves spiritually to the celebrations of the 13th of each month from May to October 2017. The faithful who follow one of these three ways must also fulfill the ordinary conditions:

Go to Confession and Communion Be interiorly detached from sin Pray for the intentions of the Pope Recite the Creed, Our Father, Hail Mary, & Glory Be They should also pray before the image of our Lady of

Fatima invoking her help

* "An indulgence is a remission before God of the temporal punishment due to sins whose guilt has already been forgiven, which the faithful Christian who is duly disposed gains under certain prescribed conditions through the action of the Church which, as the minister of redemption, dispenses and applies with authority the treasury of the satisfactions of Christ and the saints." (Canon 992 and Catechism of the Catholic Church, 1471) A plenary indulgence is a complete remission of temporal punishment due to sins and is limited to one per day. An image of Our Lady of Fatima will be exposed in the Sanctuary (SAC) and at the Shrine of Our Lady (OLS) during the Centennial.

The Celebration of Mass with the

Anointing of the Sick

7:00 p.m. Wednesday, October 18

Our Lady of Sorrows Church By the sacred anointing of the sick and the prayer of the priests, the whole Church commends those who are ill to the suffering and glorified Lord, that he may raise them up and save them.” (CCC 1499)

Who may receive this sacrament?

Those awaiting a surgery of a serious nature.

The elderly who are notably weakened, even if not seriously ill.

Sick children may be strengthened through this anointing.

Our parish invites all those Catholics who may be ill to this sacred encounter that they might know that Christ, who often visited and healed the sick, loves them in their illness. I Love Coming to Mass… I Just Wish I Could Hear Better!

Help May Be on the Way…. Despite numerous upgrades to the sound system, acoustics remain a challenge at St. Anthony Church. Not a few people struggle to hear clearly which makes full participation at Mass frustrating. Help may be on the way! Monte Bros. Sound Systems, New York, has provided a way to address the challenge! The parish would be willing to have installed a hearing assistance receiver that will activate a parishioner’s personal neck Loop/Lanyand with earplugs. In order to keep costs down and preserve the devices’ sanitary use, we would ask those parishioners interested to purchase their own device. This would be ordered through the parish, at cost, and would be credited as a church contribution. Before going forward with the installation, we would like to gauge the level of interest there is. The personal device with ear buds would cost $ 171. The personal device for those with hearing aids would be $201. We hope people would find this a worthwhile investment! Please indicate your interest by returning the form below or by sending an email to Monsignor Gervasio at [email protected]. I would be interested in purchasing a personal hearing device for use at St. Anthony Church Name _____________________________________________ Phone ____________________________________________ Email _____________________________________________

A Prayer for Recovery after Disaster God our Father, in the wake of disaster, visit our places of

desolation with your consolation. Bring strength to the weary and courage to those who feel

overwhelmed. We believe that you hold our concerns in your Fatherly care, and

that you entrust us to one another as sisters and brothers. Mobilize your people near and far to feed the hungry, shelter the

displaced, and protect those in deepest poverty. As we rebuild what is ruined, may we recover together as a

stronger community. We ask this through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Food Pantry Partnership—A Work of Our Cohort

Our weekly practice of bringing donations of food for the needy is a concrete way to fulfill the corporal work of mercy “to feed the hungry.” We would like to expand this good work by partnering with the parishes of St. Gregory the Great and St. Raphael-Holy Angels to support the Food Pantry that operates at St. Raphael Campus.

Beginning September 17, receptacles will be located at the doors of our churches for specific non-perishable food items and toiletries. It our hope that our participation in this effort will be a great help to meeting the needs of those who don’t have enough to eat or who lack financial resources. We shall also continue to provide assistance to Trenton’s Mount Carmel Guild.

Below are items requested per month.

Thanks for your generous support of this effort!

Enhancing Our School’s Life in the Spirit

We are pleased to announce that as part of our ongoing effort to strengthen our school’s program of spiritual and catechetical formation, we have arranged that our students attend Mass weekly rather than just monthly. Beginning September 22, an additional Mass will be offered on Fridays at 8:15 a.m. at Our

Lady of Sorrows Church when school is in session

Masses on the First Fridays of the month will be given special emphasis with the students participating in various ways while the Masses of the other Fridays will take

on a simpler celebration. The celebrant will offer a brief homily. It is our hope attending Mass more frequently our students will become more familiar with the Sacrifice of the Mass and that their love for the Lord will grow ever stronger.

All parishioners are welcome to these Friday Masses during the school year.
