From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, Last Monday, the Church concluded her celebration of the Christmas Season with the Feast of Baptism of the Lord. We now find ourselves within “Ordinary Time” until we come to Ash Wednesday. In English usage, the term “ordinary” most often means something that is not special or distinctive. This leads us to believe that this period in the Church’s calendar is unimportant. Yet, Ordinary Time makes up most of the liturgical year—33 or 34 weeks! Ordinary Time is called “ordinary” not because it is “common” or “unimportant” but simply because these weeks are numbered. The Latin word “ordinalis” refers to numbers in a series. Thus we have a series of Sundays between the Baptism of the Lord and Lent which continues after the Solemnity of Pentecost until the Advent. Years ago, these periods simply were called “Sundays after Epiphany” and “Sundays after Pentecost.” It is still the designation used by those who follow the liturgy in the “Extraordinary Form” (Traditional Latin Mass). During the Sundays of Ordinary Time, we shall be following the Gospel of St. Matthew, who wrote primarily for a Jewish audience. We will find that the evangelist often cites passages from the Old Testament in order to show that Jesus is the long expected Messiah and King of Israel. He also reveals Our Lord as the divine Teacher of all nations and the Church as the instrument of witness to Christ in the world. Ordinary Time is not “ordinary” at all. Let us grow in our discipleship with St. Matthew as our guide! With affection Msgr. Gervasio

Winter Advisory: Obligation to Assist at Mass

During the winter storms, please keep the following in mind: All baptized Catholics are obliged to attend Mass on Sundays and Holy Days of Obligation. However, there are particular circumstances or conditions that may excuse a Catholic from this obligation. If you are ill, homebound, or if there are severe weather conditions that make attending Mass dangerous to your safety or that of others, you are excused from the obligation. In such cases, if you are unable to attend Mass, the Church recommends making a spiritual Communion, spending some time in prayer and following a televised Mass.

Poutan, Tan Odinè an majè pati reprezante—33 oswa 34 semèn nan lane litijik la! Tan òdinè rele "òdinè" se pa paske li "komen" oswa "san enpòtans", men senpleman paske semen li yo nimerote. Mo laten "ordinalis" refere nou a anpil nimewo an seri. Li revele nou tou GranMèt nou an kòm Profesè Diven nan tout nasyon ak Legliz la kòm enstriman kap temwaye Kris la nan lemond. Tan òdinè pa ditou “òdinè". An nou grandi an disip avèk St Matye kòm gid nou! Avèk afeksyon,

Msgr. Gervasio

Nouvèl enpòtan pou sezon fredi a: Obligasyon pou asiste Lamès.

Pandan tanpèt sezon fredi yo, tanpri kenbe nan tèt nou tou sa nou pral di la yo: Tout Katolik batize gen obligasyon ale Lamès le Dimanch ak jou obligasyon yo.

Parish School News I Think, I Thunk, I Love My Skunk!

A pretty catchy line—and a very catchy way to get the children's attention! Our Arts program is very exciting at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic School. Visual and performing arts offer children of every age the opportunity to bring beauty, meaning, and depth to their learning and understanding of the world. Mrs. Kim Bowers, OLS School Art faculty, recently culminated a grade level study of color, contrast, texture, and shadows by involving her students in a first-hand lesson on skunks! She invited local author Elizabeth Watkins Colabella to visit her Second Grade Art class and bring along her pet skunk, Blossom! Ms. Colabella read her beautifully illustrated book, I Think, I Thunk, I Love My Skunk and was able to accentuate the children's study of color and contrast with a bit of background about skunks.

Did you know that skunks live only 2 years in the wild, but can have a long and pleasant life of more than 10 years once domesticated? Most skunks are born in May, and like to stay with their mothers until the fall. (That's why we so often see them traveling together in the warmer months) They have no way to protect themselves, and only use their spray when they feel threatened. Ms. Colabella has worked extensively at Seacrest Wolf Preserve in Chipley, Florida. The preserve is a homeland for a variety of animals, so the children learned a bit about animal conservation in the session with Blossom.

With murmured Ooos and Ahhs, the children each had the opportunity to pet Blossom, but not before they shared their black and white sketches and skunk creations with her! The visit by Blossom was the final piece in a series of informative lessons that allowed children to create, learn, listen, and be involved in their learning!

Jonah Accevedo and Logan Mulvey show off their work.

Yes, Our Lady of Sorrows is a very special learning place for children. Take the opportunity to learn more about our program, and how it can easily fit into your family's life and budget. On January 29, after the 11 AM Mass for Catholic Schools, we will be hosting our Open House. Stop by to enjoy one of our home basketball games, visit a classroom, and meet some of our teachers. We love company! We look forward to seeing you!

Hi! I’m Blossom!

No one will deny that the presidential election campaign of 2016 was one of the more contentious in recent history. The inauguration of our new president and vice president this Friday should be an occasion that promotes the unity

of our people and strengthens our resolve for all to work together follow the common good. We should mark the day by prayer. We might make the following prayer from the Roman Missal our own:

O God, who arrange all things according to a wonderful design, graciously receive the prayers

we pour out to you for our country, that, through the wisdom of its leaders and the integrity of its

citizens, harmony and justice may be assured and lasting prosperity come with peace through Christ

our Lord.

Help Obtain Safe Rides to School for

Catholic School Children

Problem 1. Current Catholic school students can only obtain a ride to school for a maximum of $884 per student.

2. Many bus companies and school districts are unwilling/unable to transport students at the $884 rate.

3. The ceiling should match cost of living increases, which has not happened since the 2007-2008 school year.

What Can You Do? Ask Governor Christie to increase funding for nonpublic school transportation in his Fiscal Year 2017 Budget. If your family has been affected by this problem, or you know of families who have, tell the Governor the details. Even if the bussing problem does not apply to you, but you believe in Catholic education, please contact Governor Christie.

March for Life – Washington, D.C. 44th Anniversary of Roe v. Wade Decision

Join pilgrims from all over the United States in sending a clear message that we are committed to defending life—all life from conception to natural death. We cannot and will not accept the continuing slaughter of innocent unborn babies, a slaughter that has prevented over 50 million babies from ever being born and thus experiencing the joys of life and freedom our wonderful country provides. Both the Hamilton and St. Gregory the Great Councils of the Knights of Columbus are once again co-sponsoring a bus trip to Washington, D.C., for those who would like to participate in the 2017 Right to Life March, scheduled for Friday, January 27. Please join your fellow parishioners and hundreds of thousands of others in our quest to defend the right of all, born and unborn, to that precious gift from God—Life. The Right to Life March is a very special event, with sincere and dedicated people of all ages and backgrounds. The bus will leave Our Lady of Sorrows’ parking lot at 7:30 a.m. and return by 9:30 p.m. The cost is still only $15 per adult and $5 per child. If you are interested in reserving space or would like to know more about the trip, call Rich or Mary Morey at 588-8921. We will operate on a first-come, first serve basis, so please make your reservations as soon as possible. We urge you to consider joining us this year.
