From the Pastor’s Desk Dear Parishioners, Thank you for your kind attention last week with regard to the important announcement that Fr. Jean and I made regarding the transfer and appointment of Fr. Carter. I hope you will join us on Sunday, September 11, when a farewell celebration is planned for Fr. Carter to thank him for his great priestly ministry and to offer him our good wishes as he assumes the pastoral care of the people of Holy Innocents Parish, Neptune. A reception will follow the 11:00 a.m. Mass in the church hall of Our Lady of Sorrows. This sudden and unexpected change will certainly affect areas of our pastoral life—those ministries or activities for which Fr. Carter has been responsible—as well as our Mass Schedule. It has been said that there are two things that are most stressful for parish life: the change of a pastor and the change of a Mass schedule. I think we can all agree on that! I am working in concert with our deacons, staff, and parish leaders to develop a schedule that will be as undisruptive as possible. Decisions will be made considering the following: services are at two churches; the seating capacity of our churches; the trends in attendance; and the fact that in emergencies, illness, or vacation, all Masses may have to be celebrated by one priest. I hasten to add that our schedule must take into account Canon Law, which limits the number of Masses a priest can regularly celebrate on a given day. A few years ago, a parishioner informed me, “If my Mass is ever cancelled, I will go to the neighboring parish.” I suppose there are other parishioners of like mind. I should never want them to make such a move! I hope they would keep in mind that the Faith in Our Future process asks that all parishes make adjustments to their Mass schedules considering the factors that I have noted above. Changes and adjustments will have to be made in our area and throughout the diocese. I thank you in advance for your understanding, support, and loyalty at this time of transition for us all! With Our Lady and St. Anthony to accompany us we can do great and good things! With affection, Msgr. Gervasio

Mesaj ki soti nan biwo Kire-a Frè-m ak Sè-m yo, Mesi pou atansyon w avek bel anons enpotan ke Pe Jean ak mwen te fe semen pase konsenan transfe ak nominasyon Pe Carter. Mwen espere Dimanch 11 Septanm nap nan selebrasyon pou nou di l orevwa. e di l mesi tou pou gwo ministe sasedotal li epitou ofri l konpliman nou pandan li pral asime travay pastoral li a fidel nan pawas Sts Innocents, nan Neptune. Apre Lames 11:00 a nan sal sal pawasyal OLS la, pral gen resepsyon. Chanjman britsoukou sa a ke nou pat atann setenman pral afekte kek area nan lavi pastoral nou—ministe oswa aktivite ke Pe Carter te responsab yo—ensike ore Lames nou yo. Kom yo toujou di gen 2 bagay ki ki pi boulvesan nan lavi yon pawas: 'Le gen yon lot Kire ak le ore Lames chanje'. Mwen panse ke nou tout dako sou sa. Mwen pral travay dekonsè avek dyak nou yop, amploye nou yo ak dirijan pawas yo pou devlope yon ore ki pral nan avantaj tout moun. Desizyon yo pral pran pandan nap konsidere pwen kle yo: sevis nan tou 2 Legliz yo, kapasite akey tou 2 Legliz nou yo, vale moun ki vinn Legliz, epi anka ijans, maladi, vakans nan chak Lames, nap kapab gen yon Pe. Te mwen prese ajoute ke Dwa Kanon an bay yon limit konbyen Lames yon Pe kapab selebre yon jou. Kek lane desa, yon pawasyen te di m: "Si ore Lames mwen konn vini an chanje, mwen pral nan pawas ki sou kote a". Mwen sipoze gen kek pawasyen ki panse konsa. Mwen pa ta vle yo fe yon demach parey! Avek Notre Dame ak St Antoine kom konpayon nou, nou kapab fe anpil bagay. Avèk afeksyon,

Msgr. Gervasio

Announcement Made at Masses Weekend of August 6-7

Last week, Bishop O’Connell began a telephone call with Msgr. Gervasio by saying, “Tom, I am calling to make your life a little more complicated.” The call was not so much about Monsignor as another. The call was to inform him of his intention to appoint Fr. Todd Carter as Administrator of Holy Innocents Parish, Neptune, effective September 13. This great honor and duty Fr. Carter has accepted. Due to the shortage of available priests, the bishop is unable to appoint a replacement for Fr. Carter. This vividly “brings home to us” the challenges that the diocese is facing. This is why Faith in our Future is such a serious process. This change will affect our own pastoral ministry and we will address this in the coming weeks. We shall want to congratulate Fr. Carter on his appointment and for the confidence the Bishop has placed in him. Today we offer to him our profound thanks for his ministry among us from the day of his ordination….a ministry truly exceptional in its love and fidelity to the Church, its people, and in its witness of prayer. Our loss is great but it will be Neptune’s gain. In the coming weeks we shall arrange an opportunity for all our parishioners to thank Fr. Carter and to wish him well as he opens the next chapter in this priestly ministry! May Our Lady and St. Anthony accompany him down Route 33…to Neptune and his new flock!

“A life not lived for others is not a life.” Blessed Teresa of Calcutta

Important Notice August 15—Our Lady’s Assumption

The usual obligation to attend Mass is removed this year. Masses of the Day will follow the Weekday Schedule.

2016 Summer Bible Camp the Best Yet! During the week of August 2-6, our parish hall was transformed into a cave thanks to the artistic efforts a great group of parishioners—teens and adults. The cave became a haven of education and formation in Sacred Scripture for the children of our parish. This year’s Summer Bible Camp was the most successful ever with the participation of 48 youngsters and a dedicated team of five group leaders and fifteen young volunteers! Many thanks to our Religious Education director, Mariyam Francis; our group leaders, Abeer Aman, Alexis Duffy, Clara Hodsden, Charmaine L’Oiseau, and Lisa Schulz. We are also grateful to the Cave Quest volunteers: Isabella Bassett, Raven DeRosa, Meagan Dixon, Olivia Feijo, Gabrielle Hodsden, Elizabeth Holmes, Lily L’Oiseau, Olivia Matakonis, Shannon McCoy, Talia Mendola, Giovanni Monti, Anthony Naro, Max Neyraval, Nolan Riddell, Diana Schulz, Gloria Schulz, Joseph Stillwell, and Sophia Tozzi.

Solemnity of the Assumption Monday, August 15, is the Solemnity of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a feast that came to be celebrated as early as the fifth century. It is the patronal feast of our own Diocese. Usually it is celebrated as a holy day of obligation. However, according to recent norms approved by the bishops of our country, since it falls on a Monday, the obligation to attend Mass is abrogated (rescinded). Nevertheless, love for our Blessed Mother should spur us to honor her in our daily prayers and our attendance at Mass in any event. We shall follow the weekday schedule (7:00 and 8:00 a.m.)

I invite everyone to ask for the grace that our Church be like Mary. May it be a Church which reflects Jesus, which is entirely related to Him, which has no meaning in itself except for its relationship to Him, and which, therefore, manifests Him and lives Him. And let us ask, too, for each of us the experience of this same mystery in our own lives. It is a mystery of combat and of struggle. In fact, the Apocalypse speaks of a mysterious struggle. To be with Christ, to be in the Church, means combat. An easy existence is not promised or foretold. To be with the Lord in His victory over death also means to be together with Mary in all the humble and joyful service which she renders to humanity. Think of Lourdes, of Fatima, of all the places in which the Madonna has appeared to assure us that she continues to be near the daily life of the Church.

The Thought-Full Thursdays Program is a series of presentations designed to enlighten the faithful and provide an opportunity for spiritual growth and development. The challenge for being Catholic in the 21st Century is to be informed and to maintain our faith with an open heart and mind. The 2016 Fall Season will focus mainly on Pope Francis and the virtue of mercy. One session will be designed for a panel of clergy and other theological educators to answer questions about the Church. Please join us for the “Thought-Full Thursdays” Program for the fall of 2016, which will start at the end of September and run through October. Look for more information in future bulletins.

A Summertime Reminder! Our way of life, with its emphasis on personal freedoms and on what is causal and comfortable, is bound to find its way into the choices we make in the realm of the spiritual. Our manner of dress can be a witness to our faith—a way of recognizing our church as the dwelling of the Most High and a privileged place of prayer. Various modes of attire denote the importance we attach to a particular place and to the people we encounter. Were we invited to a dignitary’s residence or even going to dine at an upscale restaurant, I doubt that any of us would consider wearing what is often seen at Mass. While not necessarily advocating very formal attire, coming to worship in clothing suited for a basketball court or the sands of the Jersey shore hardly seems appropriate for the Lord’s House. A non-believer in our midst could easily conclude that for many Catholics, worship is hardly an important event! What message do we want to give? Everyone is welcome in the Lord’s House, to be sure, but we should take the time and effort to remind ourselves and our fellow Catholics that Mass—our meeting with the Lord—is important! Appropriate attire also provides a respect for those who worship with us and preserves the modesty that we are called to practice. Not a few would play down the importance or need for such a notice, contending that these are but trifles that do not matter in the eyes of God. After all, Our Lord does not judge the exterior but the interior. This is true, but Our Lord was concerned with little things, observant of many details of worship. Externals do matter because they often reflect what we possess interiorly. We need the help of external signs as reminders of what is important. The aim of my message is not to upbraid any parishioners but meant only to summon us all to think a little more about giving witness to the sacred nature of our church and to respect all those who enter its doors. Think about it! Msgr. Gervasio

This year we will use the classic on contemplative prayer, Beginning Contemplative Prayer, by Kathryn Hermes, FSP, for our continued instruction.

I so hope you can and will, as this monthly program will be rich in grace. We will focus on a different kind of prayer each month and you will receive materials and/or books to help you practice and enjoy it for the month.
