WE WALK BY FAITH

The Christian Services Commission provides seasonal greeting cards as well as birthday cards to the residents of Wingate, a long term nursing care facility in Sharon.

We invite you to join us in making cards during the Coffee Hour on October 2. Thank you in advance for your assistance. The 65 residents of Wingate enjoy the home made cards and being remembered throughout the year.

Food Pantry Special Request-- The volunteers at the Ilse Marks Food Pantry have asked that during the month of October, as we continue to collect the weekly generous food donations , they would appreciate donations of toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss, as these are items that are somewhat costly and are not covered by food stamps. This will be especially appropriate as Halloween with its abundance of candy and treats is coming soon, and these items will be especially important as parents try to encourage good dental hygiene. And as always, they continue to be most grateful for your very generous donations. Thank you!

Protecting God’s Children Training The Archdiocese of Boston requires that all adults volunteering with children, young adults, elderly or disabled persons participate in a Protecting God’s Children Training Session. OLOS will be offering a PGC session on Sunday, October 16th from 2:00p.m.-4:30 p.m. in the Bullock Center.. All parents and other adults in the parish who are in-terested in chaperoning youth ministry events, teaching or volunteering with or alongside children and youth in the parish are invited to attend. To register, please e-mail Teresa Coda at [email protected]

Sign Up to Serve As the Faith Formation Year begins, there are numerous service opportunities available, whether you are a middle school student, high school student, family or adult parishioner:

Volunteer at the Coffee Hour Nursery (takes place during Adult Faith Formation Sessions that occur during Coffee Hour once a month) in the Bullock Center (October 16, 9:30am-11am). One adult and one to two middle school or high school students are needed.

Prepare and serve a meal at Conway House, a family shelter in Middleboro (October 23rd, 4pm-8pm, for middle school students and adults).

Prepare bagged lunches for men and women at Mainspring House (a new family service opportunity taking place in our very own Bullock Center on October 23rd at 11am). All volunteers will be asked to bring food items to be included in lunches, such as sandwich bread or fruit.

High School Students are invited to attend High School Justice Day, a FABULOUS youth-oriented conference about Social Justice and the issues that face our world on Saturday, October 29th (please register with Teresa by October 16th).

You can learn more about the service opportunities and sign up to take part in one or more by visiting www.olossharon.org/service-opportunities. Signing up ensures that we will have an adequate number of volunteers, as well as facilitates communication regarding permission slips, instructions, etc. Contact Teresa Coda with any comments or questions (781-784-2265, or [email protected]).

Serve through making a donation! Many of our service opportunities involve preparing meals or bagged lunches for local soup kitchens. Please con-sider donating items for this cause. We need: brown lunch bags, Ziploc baggies, bags of chips/pretzels/snacks, juice boxes/bottles of water, pasta sauce, spaghetti, bottles of salad dressing and parmesan cheese, peanut butter, packaged (non-perishable) cookies, and boxed brownie mixes. Donations can be placed in the box labeled “Service Donations” in the Bullock Center.

ECO-TIP OF THE WEEK: Use barrels and re-usable bins when cleaning the yard instead of lawn bags. Lawn scraps can be put in these containers, and dumped easily. It is better for the environment to dump lawn scraps where they can degrade naturally rather than putting them on the side of the street in paper bags to be thrown in the landfill or burned at a plant by waste management. You may not want the scraps on your lawn, but you can put them in an area where they can break down naturally.

The Catholic Voter & The Signs of The Times WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19, 5:30 P.M.

CORCORAN COMMONS, HEIGHTS ROOM CHESTNUT HILL CAMPUS

Vatican II's "Pastoral Constitution on the Church in the Modern World" encouraged believers to read the "signs of the times" in order to discern where God is to be found in the world and how we are to respond. This electoral season can be read as revealing a number of significant social issues that ought to be considered as Catholic citizens go to the voting booths. Presented by Kenneth Himes, O.F.M (Professor of theological ethics at the Boston College Department of Theology)
