32nd Sunday in Ordinary Time NOVEMBER 6, 2011

Jesus tells a story in the Gospel today. Ten young women were waiting for the bridegroom to come. As part of the wedding ceremony they were sup-posed to carry bright burning oil lamps. The bridegroom ran late, and the lamps began to go out. Some of the smart ones had extra oil with them, and they refused to share with the ones who had not brought enough. As a result, the unprepared women were shut out of the feast. Jesus tells us to be like the smart ones. As a child I was always upset by this story. It con-tradicted what I had been taught, that Jesus likes the ones who share. But I was missing the point. It’s not really about OIL. The oil that keeps the light burning represents something else: wisdom and virtue. And in the end, each person has to give an account of their own character before God—it is the character they have built for them-selves by thousands of daily decisions over the years. It is not something they can quickly borrow from another person. Jesus is telling us to wake up—to seek wisdom now. Because who knows when we will be called to give our account to God? And in the Old Testament reading we hear some wonderful news. “Wisdom is readily perceived by those who love her, and found by those who seek her. She hastens to make herself known in antici-pation of their desire.” This encourages us to seek Wisdom with all our hearts. She is waiting to give herself to us. Wis-dom will guide us in all those big and little deci-sions for which we will answer on the Last Day. Try asking God for Wis-dom and see what hap-pens! God wants to give you every good gift Reflection by Dr. Sarah

THE NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS INFORMATION NIGHT! Monday, November 14 in Room 6

6:30-7:30pm Our parish priests will be available to answer any questions you have about the changes to the English translation of the Mass. A short

informational DVD will also be shown.

CHANGES AT MASS BEGIN NOV 26 -27!

NEW TRANSLATION OF THE MASS Reminder: in Advent we will begin using the new translation of the Mass at the English masses. Don’t worry! We will give you a complete handout when we want you to start using the new responses. Three of the changes we have already talked about: 1) Instead of “And also with you” we will say “And

with your Spirit” 2) During the Confession, we will use the phrase, “through my fault, through my fault, through my own most grievous fault” instead of “through my own fault”. Latin: mea culpa, mea culpa, mea maxima culpa. There are some other small changes in the Confession. 3) During the Nicene Creed there are also several translation changes. The first one you will notice is “I believe” instead of “We believe”. This gives us a chance to affirm our faith as individuals. Another very noticeable change is from the phrase “one in being with the Father” to “consubstantial with the Father”. Consubstantial is used by the Latin trans-lation of the Creed (consubstantialem). It means of the same being as the Father—the Son is God, exactly as the Father is God. ALSO, you will find a change at the invitation to re-ceive Communion. Instead of “Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word and my soul shall be healed”, we will say: “Lord, I am not worthythat you should enter under my roof, but only say the wordand my soul shall be healed.” The new line comes directly from the Gospels, par-ticularly Matthew 8:8, in which the faith-filled centu-rion begs Jesus to heal his paralyzed servant: “Lord, I am not worthy to have you enter under my roof; only say the word and my servant will be healed.” This beautiful Biblical text expresses the centurion’s un-worthiness on account of sin. When Jesus encounters the centurion’s humility, he says, “Amen, I say to you, in no one in Israel have I found such faith” (Mt 8:10). Jesus’ praise for this response shows us that it is the right one—we can never be worthy to receive God Himself in the Eucharist. It is all “Grace upon grace” as St Paul says! It is a privilege to be able to use the words that Jesus praised at this moment in the mass. GOLDEN AGERS OUTING

Ella espera darse a nosotros. Sarah

CHÚA NHẬT XXXII THƯỜNG NIÊN

THIRTY SECOND SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME
