APRIL 10, 2016 THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER

Cast the net over the right side of the boat! On this third Sunday of Easter, the Church presents unto us a beautiful passage of the Gospel according to John. The disciples went back to fishing. They caught nothing during whole night. When dawn came, the Risen Master approaches them and instructs them on how to better profit from the hard work they were all putting in. The results are amazing and once they all find themselves safe and satisfied with the catch, the Living Lord feeds them. Once again, it is in the context of eating and being satisfied that the Resurrection becomes a life experience for Jesus’ friends. While his appearing to them at down should speak to us believers of New Life and Victory over shad-ows and death, his ability to nourish them should tell us of the satisfaction the hearts of believers are to experience once in communion with Christ. As the Easter tide enters its third week, when it seems natural to forget about the glory and the rejoicing in the Lord that believers should be experiencing during this holy season and while worldly endeavor threatens to cast out of our experience the permanent joy of those who are called to discover themselves as Resurrection People, this “apparition” of the Master causes his disciples to move back into action and away from former ways of life. This must become a prophet-ic call for us all. As a Church we are called to become Missionaries of Life. By rising from the tomb the Lord teaches us the ulti-mate goal of Christian existence: Life, and life to the fullest. As Easter People we should promote the dignity and sacred-ness of life in all of its expressions. We celebrate the fact that death did not overcame life and the consequence of it is to be expressed in our continuous campaign for life as a worthwhile experience. For it is in doing so that we too are called to meet the Lord, ready to give us a hand, to teach us the right way and to satisfy our longing hearts to the full… just as it happened to the disciples in today’s Gospel. Este tercer domingo de Pascua, la Iglesia nos invita a reflexionar en un encuentro que llena el Corazon creyente de satisfaccion, luz y vida nueva. habiendo alimentado a los discipulos, Jesus Resucitado toma aparte a Pedro y mientras camina por la la playa con el, tres veces le cuestiona la fidelidad, la grandeza, la sinceridad de su Amis-tad. Esta frase expresada por los labios del Resucitado pareciera que sumerje a Pedro en el desconsuelo o por lo menos en la confusion: Maestro, tu los abes todo, tu sabes que yo te quiero… Eso era lo major que podia hacer, su carino no podia escalar las dimensiones sublimes del amor la sombra de la traicion cubria de manera dramatica el encuentro de estos dos “viejos” amigos y no permitia que Pedro respondiera a la pregunta del Maestro de manera contundente: ¡SI, te Amo! El encuentro sin embargo resulta particularmente interesante a los creyentes que desean analizar su experiencia de Vida nueva en Cristo a la luz del Amor. Eds en torno a esa ralidad maravillosamente divina que nosotros somos llamados a girar, actuar y reaccionar. Es habitando en el amor como mejor se expresa el Regalo de triufo sobre la muerte que Dios nos ha otorgado en su Hijo Jesucristo. Mientras avanzamos hacia Pentecostes en este maravilloso camino Pascual, dejemos que la experiencia de Resu-rreccion sumerja nuestras vidas en el amor y permitamos que el maestro nos cuestione como lo hizo con el amigo querido aquella manana de su aparicion en en lago. Ojala que tambien nosotros estemos listos para responder sin tardanza: Maes-tro tu lo sabes todo, tu sabes que yo te amo… Adsum, L’apparizione di Cristo a sette discepoli, sul lago di Tiberiade, segna una tappa importante nella crescita della fede pasqua-le. Come il Padre aveva mandato il Figlio nel mondo, così il Signore Gesù invia in missione i suoi discepoli. La rete trabo-ccante di pesci è la parabola vivente di un apostolato che il Risorto renderà fecondo, e di cui Pietro, a motivo dello specia-le amore che nutre per il Maestro, assumerà la responsabilità suprema. Come gli apostoli, tornati al loro lavoro dopo il tragico episodio della passione, anche noi siamo tentati alle volte di perde-re la speranza. e se la nostra fede nella risurrezione non fosse che un’illusione religiosa? Se il Cristo non fosse più presente in certe nostre comunità, così chiuse in un atteggiamento di difesa e così poco inclini all’audacia apostolica? È facile esse-re tentati di ritornare ai soliti compiti quotidiani, stabili e rassicuranti nella loro banalità. Invece no! Sulla riva di questo mondo c’è qualcuno, più attivo e personale che mai, e ci invita a gettare le reti. Non riusci-amo sempre a riconoscerlo fin dal primo incontro, ma c’è: è presente all’interno delle nostre solidarietà umane e profes-sionali, della nostra vita di credenti insoddisfatti, di una fede inerte nell’impegno di coloro che cercano la verità, amano e perdonano, di coloro che lottano per un mondo migliore e più giusto. Ed è presente nel pane che spezziamo, insieme facendo memoria di lui, per tornare poi alla realtà della vita quotidiana, sostenuti dalla forza nuova dell’agàpe. E sarà per essa che anche noi, come a Pietro, verrà il coraggio, di gettarci in acqua. La lezione di Gesù. Gesù aveva promesso agli apostoli di raggiungerli in Galilea, dopo la risurrezione. Ora egli è sulla riva, simbolo dell’eternità, mentre i suoi discepoli soffrono nell’acqua, nella difficoltà e nel pericolo. Non lo riconoscono subito. Solo la fede può farlo riconoscere, attraverso i segni che egli dà. È imparando che il Signore della gloria è anche il servo che prepara la tavola e ci invita a condividere il cibo. Gesù manda i suoi a pesca di uomini: ma è lui stesso che dirige la pesca e riempie la rete. Infine investe Pietro della sua autorità di pastore: sceglie un uomo fragile, rinnegato, incapace di amare Gesù al di là dell’attaccamento umano. Ma la fede di Pietro si fonda d’ora in poi, sull’esempio del Cristo, non più su se stesso; e sarà capace dei più alti servizi per la causa del vangelo.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION From the earliest centuries, we know that some Chris-tian women desired to vow themselves to a celibate life to pray and serve. Some, but by no means everyone, wanted a kind of monastic life. Others wanted to stay in the fami-ly home. By the fourth century, the church was celebrat-ing the “Consecration of Virgins,” a rite performed by the bishop, and involving a “veiling” of the woman. It was looked upon as a form of marriage with Christ, partly be-cause in the culture of the day a woman’s status in society was linked to a man. The prayers and ritual for the conse-cration of virgins were exactly the same as the prayers and ritual for the consecration of a bride on her wedding day. The public character of the rite gave the bishop the oppor-tunity to commend the virgin to the faithful, and to threaten with punishment anyone who tried to turn her from her commitment. Eventually, the rite fell into disuse for women living in the world, and was reserved for nuns. The Second Vatican Council directed that it be revived and restored, and in nearly every diocese, single women have embraced this form of consecrated life.

Liturgia del Cielo e della Terra La Pasqua continua nella vita della Chiesa: i due momenti della salvezza (passione-risurrezione) sono costantemente presenti nel dinamismo di questa vita guidata dallo Spirito. L’assemblea riunita: «sacramento di totalità» La visione dell’apostolo Giovanni (cf seconda lettura) ci introduce in una solenne liturgia di lode: davanti al trono di Dio appare l’Agnello «ritto.., come immolato»: cioè nel doppio aspetto della passione e della risurrezione. In suo onore si leva un inno di acclamazione nel quale si fondono le voci del cosmo, degli angeli e dei santi che stanno davanti a Dio e, in seguito, degli uomini salvati, appartenenti a tutti i popoli della terra

(cf Ap 7,9). La solenne azione liturgica assume così dimensioni veramente universali, per celebrare la salvezza pasquale operata da Dio e dal suo Cristo. Ad essa si associa, qui sulla terra, la liturgia eucaristica che noi stiamo celebrando. Concretamente, l’assemblea liturgica è composta da persone diverse per situazioni di vita, provenienza sociale, livelli di fede e di interesse religioso, per ministeri e carismi ricevuti in vista del bene comune. Ma tutti siamo uniti nella medesima azione di lode che si svolge alla presenza del Cristo glorioso. La celebrazione liturgica della nostra assemblea è così immagine e anticipazione dell’assemblea escatologica. E, nel medesimo tempo, è qui-adesso, nel momento della

celebrazione stessa, «sacramento di totalità»: rappresenta e attua il «Cristo totale» che coinvolge i salvati di tutti i tempi, gli uomini di tutte le latitudini, gli spiriti celesti, i santi gloriosi e tutta la creazione. La lode cosmica dell’Apocalisse si realizza oggi nell’assemblea celebrante, per rendere onore, gloria, testimonianza all’Agnello che ci ha redenti.

«E' il Signore!» Stiamo vivendo il tempo di Pasqua, tempo di grande gioia, di gioia perché il Signore è risorto, non solo è risorto... ma perché è presente con noi, è vivo in mezzo a noi. La Chiesa vive, noi che siamo la Chiesa viviamo della fede in Gesù, Gesù risorto. E non è soltanto la comunità di coloro che condividono gli insegnamenti dottrinali di Gesù o gli insegna-menti morali di Gesù, che ammirano gli esempi di Gesù. La Chiesa tutta crede che Dio Padre ha risuscitato Gesù, e lo ha fatto "Capo e Signore". Ma come possiamo riconoscerlo (Gesù)? Come possiamo sentire la sua presenza, sentire la forza del suo Spirito nella nostra vita? Come possiamo testimoniarlo? Alcune domande che è lecito fare. E la risposta, mi pare, una precisa risposta ci dà proprio il Vangelo di oggi, lo fa con l'affermazione stupìta, meravigliata del discepolo "che Gesù amava", Giovanni: «è il Signore!». Il Vangelo che oggi ascoltiamo ci presenta sette discepoli; tutti insieme, vanno a pescare, vanno sul mare di Tiberìade. Niente di nuovo si direbbe, fanno quello che hanno fatto tante volte, quello che hanno fatto prima di aver incontrato Gesù. Compiono un gesto per loro usuale, quotidiano, gesto in cui mettevano tutta l'esperienza, tutta la loro passione di tanti anni. Tante volte avranno sperimentato la gioia di una pesca abbondante. Ora, questa notte provano delusione perché questa volta la rete è vuota. Non hanno preso nulla. I discepoli hanno lavorato, faticato tutta la notte: questo vale per tutti i discepoli, pensando sia alla fatica fisica, sia a quella spirituale, la fatica che accompagna le nostre opere e i nostri giorni. Non solo c'è la fatica, ma anche il senso di delusione; alla fatica, all'impegno non corrisponde un risultato: in quella notte non presero proprio nulla. E nel pieno della delusione e della stanchezza compare una voce, voce che sembra conosciuta, una parola, una parola che invita a riprovare, che intende risvegliare i loro animi, risvegliare ad una fedeltà, ad una fiducia, ad un'apertura alla promessa di Gesù, del Signore che dice: «Buttate ancora le reti, riprovate ancora». I discepoli potevano cedere, cedere alla stanchezza, cedere alla delu-sione. Invece obbediscono, si fidano alla parola che viene pronunciata, la parola sulla loro vita, gettano, ancora una volta la rete. Si fidano, si abbandonano alla parola del Signore. Ed ecco, il miracolo si compie. E nel segno del miracolo sen-tono la presenza del Signore, del Risorto che non abbandona i suoi discepoli ma sempre li accompagna, che è sempre con loro nel loro cammino di vita e di fede. Le reti sono piene di pesci e reggono, non si spezzano, i cuori sono pieni di gioia e di meraviglia e reggono anche essi, reggono l'impatto di un incontro non programmato con Gesù eppure atteso, tutti volevano rivederlo, risentirlo, toccarlo di nuovo, mangiare ancora con lui... E lui, il Signore asseconda, esaudisce ancora quell'attesa del cuore, dell'anima... Ed ancora prepara loro da mangiare, spezza ancora il pane per loro, lo dis-tribuisce... Questo nel vangelo... Ma noi crediamo che la stessa cosa avviene anche per noi... noi crediamo che anche per noi duran-te la Messa, durante la celebrazione eucaristica domenicale, alla quale arrivano tanti, anche noi, qualche volta stanchi, delusi per le nostre reti vuote, per non aver prodotto, combinato molto in questi giorni, ecco, nonostante questo sulla sponda del lago c'è sempre qualcuno che ci aspetta, c'è sempre qualcuno che ha qualcosa per noi, che ci sfama, che ci incoraggia, che ci sostiene, che ci dà forza... E' questo qualcuno è Gesù che ancora spezza il pane per noi, che per chi parteciperà alla messa, lo spezzerà ancora per noi. Chiediamo che questa esperienza, l'esperienza della benedizione di Dio la benedizione sulla nostra vita, la vita che sempre si rinnova e ci rinnova, ci rinnovi alla speranza, a quel coraggio che fanno di noi, uomini poveri, ma ricchi di lui, e testimoni del Vangelo.

Third Sunday of Easter

WITNESS TO THE WORD The scene in the reading from the Acts of the Apostles today evokes memories of Jesus’ trial in the Gospels. This is the

author’s intention, so as to show clearly the link between what Jesus did, what the apostles are doing, and what we are called to do for the sake of the Name. Just as Jesus spoke the truth of the message of salvation before the high court, so Peter and the apostles fearlessly proclaim their witness to the Good News of Jesus Christ. How easy it would have been to lie, to deny Jesus; they would have escaped with their good name. Yet they understood that denying Jesus meant losing everything. They would lose not only themselves, but also the Christian community that was just beginning to come together. They took their stand to show other mem-bers of the church of Christ that the Good News is indeed a truth worth living for—and dying for.

FEED MY SHEEP John’s Gospel today also echoes an earlier Gospel scene, the scene of Peter’s denial of Jesus. Jesus goes out with the disci-

ples to fish, as he must have done many times during his life. And they catch so many fish, it seems as if they have caught all the fish in the world. Then Jesus offers Peter another chance, and this time Peter does not fail. “Yes, Lord, you know that I love you” (John 21:15). And Jesus explains the cost of that love. For Peter is being charged with tending the sheep, catching the fish. Following Jesus means not just living the Good News, but spreading the word. It means forming and tending communities, building and spreading the church of Christ throughout the world. That’s Peter’s mission, and by virtue of our baptism it’s our mission as well. We are called to live and proclaim the Good News of salvation, to live in a way that builds up the community of Christ. We are called to witness to the world the Christian way of life.
