MAY 15, 2016 PENTECOST SUNDAY

Receive the Holy Spirit; whose sins you forgive will be forgiven! On the feast of Pentecost we celebrate the outpouring of the Holy Spirit over the hearts of believers. Those who were threaten by the political and religious powers of their time, those who experienced persecution because of their faithful following of Jesus, those whose hearts were filled with anxiety and confusion were now strengthen by the gift of God’s Spirit and thus were able to set aside their fears and become capable of fulfilling the masters desires: Go out into the whole world and teach all nations, baptize them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit! Since its beginnings, the missionary action in the Church has been considered the effort of the Holy Spirit; in fact, the Church herself is understood to be born on the day of Pentecost as a consequence of God’s Spirit being sent to us by Je-sus Christ as a special gift for believers. However, such a precious gift is not to be taken as a once in a lifetime experience, God’s gift to us is to be experienced as a continuous endowment each believer in Christ is called to experience as many times as needed. On the feast of Pentecost we remember in a solemn manner the outpouring of the Spirit and thus the birth of the Church, but we must be aware that such a pre-cious gift is something God provides for us as many times as needed. Just as it happened to the apostles, when we feel exhausted, or experience confusion or pain, when we realize our human efforts are not enough, we are to raise our hearts in prayer and beg for the strength, the light and the joy of the Spirit, and it certainly will come to us. In fact, every time we celebrate the sacraments (in a very special way the sacrament of reconciliation) the gift of the Spirit is shed upon us through the forgiveness of sins. As we celebrate today this beautiful solemnity of Pentecost, let us take the opportunity to thank the Lord for the gift of such a divine Gift, and let us pray that it may come to us every time we need to be encouraged. May we all feel strengthened, en-lighten and empowered by the gift of God to humanity and may we all become a true people of Pentecost, a community of faith illuminated by the divine gift, may we all discover ourselves the Church of Christ guided by the Holy Spirit to worship God the Father. Adsum, ¡Reciban el Espíritu Santo! Al celebrar la Fiesta de Pentecostés, los creyentes cerramos solemnemente la jornada Pascual. Por cincuenta días nos hemos alegrado por la Resurrección del Señor y ahora concluimos esta caminata de Vida Nueva celebrando que desde el seno del Padre, Cristo el Señor envía a nuestros corazones creyentes el Espíritu Santo. Cincuenta días después de haberse sorprendido con la Victoria de Cristo sobre la muerte, los discípulos fueron llenos de la Fuerza de lo alto y llenos de entu-siasmo y coraje santo salieron a proclamar que Cristo Jesús -aquel a quien sus enemigos habían dado muerte colgándolo de un madero-, ahora había sido constituido Señor de vivos y muertos. En la primera lectura escuchamos que ese mismo día, los discípulos salieron a predicar con ánimo encendido y que alre-dedor de tres mil personas se añadieron ese día a la comunidad de los creyentes. Tradicionalmente este evento se ha interpretado como el nacimiento de la Iglesia Católica que viene a establecerse en el mundo como instrumento de salvación y comunidad de bautizados, animada por la fuerza de Dios que empuja nuestra actividad misionera hasta los últimos rincones de la tierra, provo-cando que el Evangelio de Jesucristo sea conocido por todos. De hecho es gracias al trabajo del Espíritu Santo que la Iglesia Cató-lica lleva a cabo todo su trabajo evangelizador, catequético y misionero. Al celebrar este día el regalo maravilloso que Dios nos ha hecho a los creyentes al derramar sobre nuestras vidas el Espí-ritu de Amor, seamos conscientes que cada vez que nos acercamos a los sacramentos (especialmente al de la confesión) la fuerza de ese Santo Espíritu se renueva en nuestra existencia. Procuremos vivir siempre con la confianza de que Dios Espíritu Santo vive en nosotros, anima nuestras desolaciones, ilumina nuestras sombras, alegra nuestras tristezas, entusiasma nuestras depresiones, refresca nuestros desiertos, disipa con valor nuestros miedos, impregna con vida nuestras muertes, nos deja saber que Dios está siempre a nuestro lado y anima nuestra vida toda. Que la Fiesta de Pentecostés nos haga despertar a la acción del Espíritu en nuestro mundo. È nata la chiesa, umanità nuova ricreata dal soffio divino, che annuncia al mondo un dono insperato, la buona notizia del perdono dei peccati: «Ciò che occhio non ha mai visto, ciò che orec-chio non ha mai udito, e non è mai entrato nel cuore dell’uomo» Non è più tempo di paura e di ripiegamento su se stessi. È tempo di lasciare che lo Spirito superi tutte le frontiere e conduca l’umanità intera dove Dio vuole. Non si può separare la Pentecoste dalla Pasqua. L’antica festa della primizia del raccolto oggi offre a tutti le ricchezze pasquali e distribuisce i trofei conquistati nella battaglia decisiva. L’opera della salvezza non è ancora giunta al suo pieno compimento, ma tutto è già stato donato nel frutto straordinario che era stato promesso dal fiore della pasqua: lo Spirito del Signore che riempie l’universo e la terra intera col suo fuoco ardente. Con l’invio del dono per eccellenza, la Pentecoste è la piena manifestazione della sovrabbondanza divina, della folle generosità del Padre, del traboccare della sua vita, comunicata all’umanità in un abbraccio eterno. Ed è anche un discorso profetico sull’uo-mo: «Sarete come dei». Ben lungi dallo svuotamento o dal ridurre la consistenza e la serietà della condizione umana in questo mondo, lo Spirito dà all’uomo entusiasmo e forza, indicandogli profeticamente il futuro: i cieli nuovi e la terra nuova, la trasfig-urazione di tutte le cose annunciata dalle ultime pagine dell’apocalisse, tutto ciò che Dio ha preparato per coloro che ama. Nella nostra vita terrena, lo Spirito è la vita eterna già cominciata. Ascoltiamo dunque quest’acqua viva che mormora dentro di noi: «Vieni al Padre». Si è alzato il vento, bisogna cercare di vivere, di navigare verso Dio, il futuro dell’uomo. Il vero maestro— Un cristiano non può accontentarsi di parole, deve concretizzare il suo amore per il Cristo, osservando i suoi comandamenti, vivendo come lui ha vissuto. Per questo abbiamo bisogno dello Spirito, che ci insegna il vero modo di amare, facendoci sperimentare la comunione in cui siamo immersi: Gesù nel Padre suo, noi in lui e lui in noi.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION “Order” and “presbyter” are not everyday words in our vocabulary, since we think of order as a quality of life rather than a collective noun, and “priest” usually does just fine in everyday conversation. Yet each word has deep roots in our tradition. At an ordination we select men for service to the community. Ordo is a Latin word drawn not from pagan religious life but from Imperial Rome. It meant a distinct body standing apart from the people, such as a body of people responsible for civil governance, senators for example. Think of the selectmen or board of governors in your civic home, and you will get the idea. The church borrowed the term to describe the place of certain people within the people of God, thus the “order of deacons,” “the order of presbyters,” and even “the order of virgins, catechumens, widows, neo-phytes, penitents,” and so on, as distinct groups within the church. Just as ancient Rome had various uniforms for the ranks and stations in civil life, so too did certain garments give clues to membership in an “order” in the church. So, our tradition favors the idea of an ordination liturgy not as receiving something so much as being received. This is clearly expressed in the liturgy. The “kiss of peace” is given only by the ordaining bishop and priests to the newly “ordained,” not by the faithful, the deacons, or the concelebrating bishops who are present.

THE FULLNESS OF THE HOLY SPIRIT

The church wakes up to an amazing message this morning. Look around and see who has been called. Listen to the voices of those who proclaim Jesus is Lord. You’ll find no race of people left out; you’ll find no language on earth unfit to proclaim the glory of God. We call Pentecost Sunday the “birthday of the church.” In many ways, the church is still being born. Only when we all know the peace Jesus offered in today’s Gospel will we really know the fullness of the Holy Spirit. St. Paul assures us in today’s second reading that “all of us have been given to drink of the one Spirit.” When we look around us in the church we should see everyone. But we don’t. Not yet. What is holding us back from fully embracing the one Body of Christ? When will we see our differences as manifestations of the same Holy Spirit?

La Chiesa vive nello Spirito di Cristo Durante il tempo pasquale la liturgia ci ha fatto meditare sulla presenza del Risorto nella Chiesa, sul dono dello Spirito, sulla Chiesa in quanto segno e annuncio della vita nuova nata dalla Pasqua del Signore. In questa solennità di Pentecoste, la prima lettura (Atti) e il vangelo di Giovanni, pur narrando lo stesso evento con procedimenti letterari e prospettiva teologica diversi, presentano la nuova realtà della Chiesa, frutto della risurrezione e del dono dello Spirito. Lo Spirito dell’alleanza universale e definitiva Le immagini usate da Luca nel raccontare l’evento di Pentecoste permettono di stabilire un parallelo tra la Pentecoste del Sinai (cf Es 19,3-20; 31,18) e quella di Gerusalemme: — al Sinai, tutto il popolo era stato convocato in assemblea; fuoco e vento impetuoso avevano manifestato la presenza di Dio sul monte; Dio aveva dato a Mosè la legge dell’Alleanza; — a Gerusalemme, gli apostoli sono «tutti insieme nel medesimo luogo» (At2,1); nella casa in cui sono riuniti si manifestano gli stessi fenomeni del Sinai (vv.

2-3); Dio dà lo Spirito della nuova Alleanza (v. 4). Questa è la novità della Pentecoste cristiana: l’Alleanza nuova e definitiva è fondata non più su una legge scritta su tavole di pietra, ma sull’azione dello Spirito di Dio. Si comprende come «senza lo Spirito Santo, Dio è lontano, il Cristo resta nel passato, il vangelo una lettera morta, la Chiesa una semplice organizzazione, l’autorità un potere, la missione una propaganda, il culto un arcaismo, e l’agire morale un agire da schiavi. Ma nello Spirito Santo il cosmo è nobilitato per la generazione del Regno, il Cristo risorto si fa presente, il vangelo si fa potenza e vita, la Chiesa realizza la comunione trinitaria, l’autorità si trasforma in servizio, la liturgia è memoriale e anticipazione, l’agire umano viene deificato» (Atenagora).

La Forza stessa di Dio.

È molto bello che l'Amore di Dio, riversato oggi sulla sua Chiesa nascente, nella persona degli apostoli, radu-nati in preghiera con Maria nel cenacolo, si manifesti in lingue di fuoco. Noi siamo sòliti dire che l'amore bru-cia, è vero: purifica rinnova, santifica e vivìfica perché quel fuoco viene da Dio ed è per tutti noi. Scese quel giorno, in quella prima pentecoste, ma ripete la sua azione per sempre, sino alla fine dei tempi. L'amore di Dio è lo Spirito Santo, la terza persona della Santissima Trinità, è l'essenza e la perfezione dell'amore, perché sgorga dal cuore del Padre e del Figlio suo, Gesù Cristo. È il Paràclito, il consolatore, l'avvocato, la verità, l'energia vitale per ognuno e per la chiesa. Ci era stato promesso come garanzia di una unione indissolubile con Cristo e con il Padre. I primi ad essere interiormente trasformati furono gli stessi apostoli: inizialmente titubanti, ignari, deboli poi resi impavidi ed araldi coraggiosi, pronti a tutto, fino al martirio. Il cammino della Chiesa dai suoi esordi, costantemente sarà guidato da quello Spirito, che supererà ogni insidia, conserverà in-tegro il deposito della fede, sarà segno visibile di unità e di pace. Le forze degli inferi non prevarranno contro di essa. Con quello stesso Spirito una schiera, che nessuno può contare, ha conseguito la santità fino all'ero-ismo. Spira ancora quello Spirito sulla Chiesa di oggi e sugli uomini del mondo, segnando il cammino dell'u-manità sulle vie della sapienza e della concordia. Molti, è vero, camminano ancora a luci spente o si affidano alla tenue luce della ragione umana, ma sta crescendo il bisogno di luce autentica, di amore vero, di solidarietà operativa, di giustizia a tutto campo. Pare che la pentecoste di quest'anno ci colga particolarmente assetati di luce e di verità. Urge quello Spirito per il nostro mondo dopo i fallimenti di ogni genere. Urge alla Chiesa, sempre bisognosa di rinnovamento, sempre protesa a nuove illuminazioni dello Spirito. Urge ai pastori e ai sacerdoti perché siano testimoni di verità con la parola e con l'esempio. Urge a coloro che governano le sorti del mondo perché diventino operatori di pace. Urge alle famiglie affinché attingano amore autentico e siano capaci di fedeltà e di indissolubilità. Urge ad ogni credente in Cristo perché non abbia a mancare l'obiettivo finale della propria esistenza. Urge a chi scrive questi pensieri affinché sappia diffondere speranza e dare luce ai cuori... «Vieni Spirito Santo, accendi in noi il fuoco del tuo amore».

LA PLENITUD DEL ESPÍRITU SANTO La Iglesia se despierta esta mañana con un asombroso mensaje. Mira a tu alrededor a ver quién ha sido llamado. Escucha las voces de los que proclaman que Jesús es el Señor. Encontrarás que ningún pueblo ni raza ha sido excluido; ningún idioma del mundo es incapaz de proclamar la glo-ria de Dios. Decimos que el Domingo de Pentecos-tés es el “cumpleaños de la Iglesia”. En diversas ma-neras, la Iglesia todavía está naciendo. Sólo cuando todos conozcan la paz que Jesús ofrece en el Evan-gelio de hoy es que de veras conoceremos la pleni-tud del Espíritu Santo. San Pablo nos asegura en la segunda lectura de hoy que “a todos se nos ha dado a beber del mis-mo Espíritu”. Cuando pasamos nuestra mirada por la Iglesia, deberíamos de ver a todos. Pero no es así. Todavía no, ¿qué barrera nos impide abrazarnos en un solo Cuerpo de Cristo? ¿Cuándo vamos a reco-nocer que nuestras diferencias son manifestaciones de un mismo Espíritu Santo?
