Day of Recollection for WomenOn Saturday, April 13, we will have our monthly Day of Rec-ollection for Women in the church at 9 a.m. It will consist of Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, two preached medita-tions, a talk by a lay woman on some practical aspect of living the faith, an opportunity for the Sacrament of Reconciliation, and Benediction. All women are welcome. Prior to the Day of Recollection there is Mass at 8 a.m. which is open to everyone.

Good Friday abstinence and fasting: Those who are 14 years and older are obliged to observe the laws of abstinence by abstaining from meat on Good Friday, April 19. Also, all adults 18 and older, up to the beginning of their 60th year, are bound by the laws of fasting on Good Friday: We are limited to a single full meal (meatless). Two other meals suf-ficient to maintain strength may be taken according to one’s needs, but those two meals together should not equal another full meal.

PALM SUNDAY OF THE PASSION OF THE LORDPastor’s PageThis week we celebrate Holy Week, in particular the Sacred Triduum (Holy Thursday, Good Friday, and Easter Sunday), the holiest time of the year. We come to the core mysteries of our faith of the Passion, Death, and Resurrection of Our Lord Jesus Christ. Let us ask the Holy Spirit to help us enter into this week the best we can. I strongly encour-age everyone not to treat this as any other week but seize time every day for some more focused prayer.

We might want to pick up the Gospels and read the last few chapters of each, which detail what Our Lord underwent and how others responded. We could reflect on many dynamics that are man-ifested throughout the week. We might want to reflect on praying about the Eucharist and our response to this most precious gift (if possible, pray in the presence of the Lord in the Eucharist in Adoration). We might want to read and reflect on the priesthood of Jesus Christ, how we share in the royal priesthood of Christ, and the importance of the min-isterial priesthood so we can live what we have received in baptism. We may reflect on the call to serve others and the new commandment of Christ to love one another as he has loved us.

The Gospel accounts bring to light different dynamics of temptation and sin, especially how we see the falling of Judas and Peter, and their different responses to their falling. Of course, this week we will ponder the mystery of suf-fering, humility, trust in God’s Will, the cross, how Our Lady accompanied Jesus in his cross and death. Ultimately, we want to ponder the heart of Jesus Christ and what he underwent through his Passion, Death and Resurrection, and that he is alive (his life has conquered death).

Along with personal prayer we should try to participate in the different litur-gies offered this week. Participating in them not only gives us opportunities to reflect on these many mysteries and dynamics of Christ’s victory over sin

and death, but praying with others in the liturgies allows the Holy Spirit to stir our hearts by these experiences. If you have conflicts in your schedules with some of these liturgies, wherever you are during that time, do the best you can to meditate on these mysteries.

Knowing Holy Week is falling on school vacation, if you are travelling, look up the local Catholic churches (you can use masstimes.org) to see when their Masses and Good Friday Service are so you can still participate in them even though you will not be here. This can be a great teaching moment for you and your family when celebrating Holy Week at another parish.

Holy Week detailsOn Tuesday, April 16, there is the annual Chrism Mass at the Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption in Fall River at 4 p.m. At this beautiful Mass, all the priests in the diocese renew their ordination promises. Also, Bishop daCunha will bless the oils of chrism, catechumen, and sick that we will use for the different sacraments through-out the year (the oils blessed from last year will be burned). All are welcome to attend. If you have never been to the Chrism Mass, I highly recommend it. No Confessions that Tuesday.

On Holy Thursday, April 18, the Mass of the Lord’s Supper will be at 7 p.m. when we celebrate the institutions of the Eucharist and the ministerial priest-hood. Lent ends at this point. Bishop daCunha will be coming to celebrate this Mass with us (he has expressed the desire to join us, knowing that as a par-ish we have had to face several challeng-es this last year, and he wants to come pray with us so we are aware of his love and support). Also on Holy Thursday, all holy water fonts are emptied, and before Mass, the Blessed Sacrament is removed, so we will consume hosts that were consecrated at that Mass. Our reg-ular Adoration in the chapel will end at 5 p.m. and will not resume until Easter Sunday. It is at this Mass that the bishop

Father Kevin Cookwill wash the feet of 12 parishioners. At the end of Mass, we will process around the church and repose the Blessed Sacrament in the Adoration Chapel. Ad-oration will go until 11 p.m. After Mass, for anyone interested, we will be going to the Seven Churches to spend time in adoration, and after gather in the lower church for pizza and desserts. If you are interested in taking part please notify Fr. Kevin so we can plan accordingly.

On Good Friday, April 19, we remem-ber Our Lord’s Passion, in particular from noon to 3 p.m. It is a good time to foster quiet prayer. If you are working, do your best to maintain the awareness of Christ’s sacrifice during that time. In the church from noon to 1 p.m. we will have the meditation on the Seven Last Words of Christ. The Good Friday Service will be at 3 p.m. and I hope we will have the relic of the True Cross for veneration of the cross. Confessions will be offered from 4:30-6 p.m. At 7 p.m. we will pray the Stations of the Cross. It is also a day of fasting and abstinence from meat.

On Holy Saturday, April 20, there are Confessions from 3:15-4:15 p.m. The Easter Vigil is at 8 p.m. The Easter Vigil is the most solemn Mass celebrated during the year. Even though it is long, it is beautiful and I encourage all to join us for it if you can. We will have several adults being baptized, confirmed, and receiving the Eucharist for the first time. Our Easter Sunday Masses will be at the regular times and on this wonderful day we renew our baptismal promises as we are renewed with the joyful awareness that Christ is Risen!

— Fr. Kevin

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

Those who oppress the poor revile their Maker, but those who are kind to the needy honor him. Proverbs 14:31

Today is Palm Sunday and the beginning of the holiest of Christian weeks. We see Jesus riding into Jerusalem on a colt with the multitude of his disciples welcoming him and calling out, “Blessed is the King who comes in the name of the Lord.” May our hearts and home always find a welcome entry for Je-sus, the “King who comes in the name of the Lord.”“He who carries God in his heart bears heaven with him wherever he goes.” — Ignatius of Loyola

If you know anybody who needs help, contact the Society of St. Vincent de Paul, 401-603-8888.

The next meeting will be Tuesday, May 14, at 7 p.m. in the lower church. New members are welcome.

The Chaplet of Divine Mercy is prayed in the adoration chap-el Monday through Saturday at 3 p.m.

A rosary for priests and all vocations is prayed in the adora-tion chapel every Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

A novena to St. Anne for the protection of children is prayed every Friday at noon in the adoration chapel.

A statue of the Blessed Mother, located in the first confes-sional in the adoration chapel, can be borrowed for one week. Please use the sign-out sheet.

Divine Mercy Sunday Holy Hour: On Sunday, April 28, Divine Mercy Sunday, there will be a holy hour in the church at 3 p.m. (the hour of mercy). We will have Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, a talk, praying of the Divine Mercy Chaplet, opportunity for Confession and silent Adoration, and Benediction. It is always a beautiful experience, so please mark your calendar to come.

Building a Culture of Vocations: Every month we pray for different vocations to support those who are respond-ing to the Lord’s call. In the month of April, let’s pray for Bish-op da Cunha, Deacon Rick Varier at St. Theresa of the Child Jesus in South Attleboro, Deacon Ryan Healy as he prepares for ordination to the priesthood, Steve Booth, a seminarian of our diocese who will be ordained a transitional deacon May 11, Joseph and Charlene Mullen for the gift of the bond of marriage, and Sr. Perpetua.

Tenebrae Service in Norton: St. Mary’s Parish in Nor-ton will celebrate Tenebrae on Saturday, April 13, at 7 p.m. Tenebrae dates back to the early church. There are seven “shad-ows” that represent seven stages of the Good Friday events. At each stage there will be a scripture reading, a meditation, a time of silent prayer, and a song. At each stage, a candle will be extinguished until the church is in complete darkness. Ten-ebrae will be led by parish lectors and members of St. Mary’s Choir and the Boston Black Catholic Choir. We invite you to join in as we reflect on this mystery of Redemption merited for us by the death and resurrection of Christ.

Roe Act – A Radical Abortion Bill Information from Mass Citizens For Life, 529 Main St., Suite 205, Boston. Go to masscitizensforlife.org to sign a petition op-posing this radical abortion act. These are the provisions of the Massachusetts ROE ACT, filed in the MA Senate as S1209:• Removes all parental involvement: Children will be able to go to an abortion clinic for any reason without parents being notified. • Gives abortionists carte blanche to kill: Their decision “may be exercised in the light of all factors —physical, emotional psychological, familial, and the person’s age — relevant to the well-being of the patient.” In other words, if you feel that the cost of college is a strain on your family, and you tell the doc-tor, you can get an abortion up to birth. This means that if the doctor decides you have a genetic risk for diabetes or for a child born with a disability, abort at any level of development.• Legalizes infanticide and removes the requirement to save the life of a 7-, 8-, or 9-month-old child who survives the abortion. If the baby is born alive during a late term proce-dure, he or she can be killed there on the operating table.• Makes abortions performable outside of a hospital, so this effectively legalizes back alley abortions. Roe will require that “Healthy Start” funds be used to pay for abortions on middle class women that do not have Medicaid/MassHealth. Ironical-ly, “Healthy Start” is a program begun to lower infant mortali-ty rates and serve underprivileged and at-risk mothers.
