CANONIZATION OFBLESSED

MOTHER TERESABlessed Mother Teresa will becanonized today 9/4 by PopeFrancis. This day also marks a

special jubilee for workers and volunteers of mercy. MotherTeresa was born Agnes Gonxha Bojaxhiu August 26, 1910, inSkopje, Macedonia. After joining the Sisters of Loretto at age17, she was sent to Calcutta, where she later contractedtuberculosis and was sent to rest in Darjeeling. On the way,she felt what she called “an order” from God to leave theconvent and live among the poor. After she left her convent,Mother Teresa began working in the slums, teaching poorchildren and treating the sick in their homes. A year later, someof her former students joined her, and together they took inmen, women and children who were dying in the gutters alongthe streets. In 1950, the Missionaries of Charity were born asa congregation of the Diocese of Calcutta. In 1952, thegovernment granted them a house from which to continue theirmission of serving Calcutta’s poor and forgotten. Almost 19 yrsago, at 87yrs old, she died of a heart attack on 9/5/97. On10/19/03, six years after her death, Mother Teresa wasbeatified by St. John Paul II. Let us ask this great woman offaith to intercede for a world at war, nations filled with fear, terror and dread. May this tiny woman and towering spiritualgiant help us to open the doors of our nations, communities, homes and hearts to welcome strangers and offer themhospitality and love. May soon-to-be St. Teresa of Calcuttapray for us and teach us how to love God and neighbor in unityand harmony. May she teach us how to be the face of mercyand charity in our world today. St. Teresa of Calcutta, pray for us.

LITURGY CORNER100 yrs ago the first Monday in Sept was not aholiday. Working people in NYC walked off theirjobs so they could meet and march together. This

was one moment in a long struggle for the rights of workingpeople. Labor Day became a holiday to honor the sacrifice andamazing courage of workers who had no standing at all untilthey all stood together. It then became a holiday for us all toremind us that human work can’t be bought and sold. Itbecame a holiday to acknowledge the right and even the dutyof working people to organize unions and to stand in solidarity. We need to know what it means today to stand in solidarityand to think about other people as brothers and sisters. Weneed to know what it means that what hurts one will hurt usall, that what is of benefit to one is of benefit to all. Laborunions did not begin with grand schemes for millions ofworkers. They began with a few people saying, “If you treatmy co-worker like that, you won’t have me to push aroundanymore.” In place after place, mostly poor and powerlesspeople saw that their only power was solidarity with oneanother. That is what is asked of us now. Labor Day beganas a celebration of courageous solidarity. We can continue thecelebration! Have a blessed week! Lisa

FAITH AT HOMEEach year around this time there is a flurry ofactivity for many people. That flurry of activity hasto do with returning to school. Some parentswelcome it, and some students consider it a

nightmare. Strange how one word can evoke such a diverseamount of emotion. For new parents it is the beginning of thepassage in life where children separate themselves from onefamily and begin to form friendships with a new family (theschool). If we think about it, we all still go to school, some in amore formal setting than others, but we all go to school, theSCHOOL OF LIFE. No matter what age or circumstances wefind ourselves in, experiences in life have taught us andcontinue to teach us to grow and mature, to be who we are...Education is a gift that belongs to all of us and opens the doorto a wealth of knowledge. Knowledge is a gift that brings uswisdom and understanding. Wisdom and understanding aregifts that bring us courage and wonder and awe in thepresence of God. As we prepare to begin this journey, I askthis prayer for everyone...Spirit of God fill us with the fire ofyour love, guide us to know and love you more. Teach us touse these gifts wisely so that we can become all that we canbe, The People of God May all of you have a safe and joy-filled“First Day of School”. Enjoy you week! Lisa
