A LETTER FROM OUR PASTOR, FR. JOHN McCARTHY

Dear Parishioners and School Community of Our Lady of Mercy Family, As we continue our Easter Season and navigate through these very challenging times of hardship and separation; we can also face these trials courageously and find hope in the midst of our suffering as we join together in spiritual communion on this beautiful Feast Day of Pentecost. Today, we celebrate the birthday of our Church, because it was on the first Pentecost that the infant Church was launched on course and took on the missionary role. Sacred Scripture tells us that while the Apostles

were huddled together in prayer with our Blessed Mother Mary in the Upper Room, suddenly there was a roaring wind and the Holy Spirit descended upon them in the form of tongues of fire. This extraordinary action gave these timid and frightened men the courage to rush into the streets and fearlessly preach the Word of God to everyone, friend and foe alike! The Spirit of the Lord was poured out and transformed the Apostles to boldly announce the Good News message of the mighty acts of God and our salvation secured in the power of His Son Jesus’ resurrection. Ever since that time in Salvation history, the Holy Spirit has been a permanent presence and a tower of strength in guiding, guarding and directing its course into the future. The action of the Spirit continues in our own time, especially as we endure the present trials of this dreadful pandemic to give us courage, strength and healing. It was the same Spirit that was first evident on the day of our Baptism into Christ. It was on that special occasion that the seed of eternity was planted within our being bringing us into a loving relationship with Almighty God, who invited each of us to become His adopted sons and daughters. Pentecost, and the coming of the Holy Spirit, is Jesus announcing that God our Father has breathed His life into our bones giving us an opportunity to share in His eternal life. Heaven has been placed within our reach as we make room for the Spirit of the living God to dwell within us in the present. The start-ing point for accepting the gift of the Holy Spirit is to increase our prayer life, which helps put us into a more intimate and loving relationship with God. Notice the Spirit came upon the Apostles while they were in prayer! Without an attitude of prayerfulness, it is most difficult to discover our special talents and the unique role we are called to play in the mission of the Church. Once we discover our own particular gifts then there is also an obligation on us to use them in building up the Body of Christ on earth. The story of Pentecost invites us to reflect upon our openness and our response to the fresh outpouring of the Spirit in our own lives each day. Let us continue to shares our stories with one another and storm the gates of Heaven together with our prayers, particularly for those who are suffering with this corona virus, directly or indirectly; and especially for those who have unfortunately succumbed to it as we ask God to grant them eternal life. On this Pentecost Sunday, let us give thanks to our Father in Heaven for fulfilling His Easter promise. May that same Spirit lift us up from this dreadful pandemic very soon and unite all nations on earth to the glory and honor of the Risen Lord in our midst; and may our Blessed Mother Mary, Our Lady of Mercy, keep our parish and school community always under the mantle of her love, care and protection. With my sincere prayers, I remain truly yours in Christ, Father John McCarthy

Dear OLM Family, I pray that all of you are holding up during the ongoing challenges that the pandemic presents. Be assured that you and your loved ones have been in my prayers. Given the situation with the pandemic, many have been asking about Ordination this June. The status of this year's Ordination date is unclear at this point. Every Diocese has been handling it differently. I am touching base, as well, at this time to call to your attention that just before the lockdown took place, an area of my personal formation came to light that would benefit from some additional attention. Therefore, Bishop Barres has asked that I step away from continued formation at this time. Be assured that I am greatly indebted to each and every one of you for all of your past support in every and all ways. At this time, I would be very grateful if you would continue to support me with your prayers. Know that all of the OLM Family remains in mine. While I will not be getting ordained this year, we still have much to look forward to as the Church on Long Island will be gaining two great priests this year, Rev. Mr. John Crozier and Rev. Mr. Rafal Borowiejski. Please pray for them as they approach ordination in this time of great uncertainty. May the peace of Christ be with you and your families especially during this time. To Christ through Mary, Paul Clores

The Easter Season –

a time for

Sacraments!

The Easter season usually offers us a wonderful time to celebrate many of the gifts that God bestows on us through the Sacraments. This is usually the time when many of our parishioners and family members, are receiving the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation, First Holy Communion and Holy Matrimony.

But what about this year? The special limits placed upon us because of COVID19 means that these great times of celebra-tion and joy will need to be postponed until such time that it will be safe for us to gather once more around the Table of the Lord. Then we will be able to join as the family of believers and do what is so very important…be strengthened by God’s love given to us through the Sacraments.

In the meantime: let us pray for those (especially our younger parishioners) who must wait a while longer before they receive God’s Sacramental graces – that they will use this “extra” time to continue growing in their relationship with Jesus and His Body, the Church.

Let us pray for ourselves, that we may be invigorated by the Holy Spirit’s gifts and continue to witness to the Good News, that Christ is Risen!

May I ask you to especially pray for vocations?

Pray for those who are being called to the Sacrament of Marriage. Ask God to help them be open to His love that overflows through them to their spouse; and that they will generously model God’s faithful, generous love to the rest of us.

If everything is back on track as God Wills, in June we will have the ordination to the priesthood for our Diocese. Our need is great! God continues to call! So let us encourage, support and pray for those who are being called to priesthood, deaconate and religious life – that they will be generous in their response to God’s invitation.

Lastly, remember that each of us who have been fully initiated into the Church (have received Baptism, Confirmation and Holy Eucharist)…and who have also realized our call to a vocation of love (Marriage, Holy Orders, Religious Life, Single Life)…may be examples that inspire others to follow Jesus, so that together we will continue to build up His Kingdom here, on earth.

LIFE NEWS - JUNE 2020

Life News - 3 - June 2020 FEDERAL LEGISLATION As of May 7, the next COVID-19 response Bill was being craft-ed. It would send out more money to allow laid-off workers to keep their employer medical plan, as per the 1985 COBRA Act. But just like the prior HR.6201, (See LN, 5/20, p3) Nancy Pelosi is trying to exempt this new bill from Hyde Amendment rules, which ban Federal funds paying for abortions. Rep. Bradley Byrne [AL-1] wrote that Pelosi is keep-ing the House shut down while she negotiates multi-trillion-dollar bills with the Administration. Then she calls the 434 ‘non-essential’ House members back to vote yes or no on the bill. There are no committees, debates, or amendments. There is no chance for members to actually ‘represent’ their constituents. (See: www.ALtoday.com/archives 5/4/20) The Federal Emergency Management Agency issued a Civil Rights Bulletin re Crisis Standards of Care during the current pandemic. Decisions on treatments, or denials thereof, must be made on a bias-free, individualized judgement of objective med-ical evidence, and the wishes of the patient. HHS’s Office of Civil Rights recently put out similar guidelines, in response to reports that medical care rationing was being considered. The Supreme Court, in early May, heard oral arguments telephonically for the first time. C-SPAN broadcast them live. Their graphics during the May 6 Little Sisters case only men-tioned contraceptives, not abortifacients or sterilization. Justice Ginsberg summarized the proabortion position with questions that stated ObamaCare requires all women can get free con-traceptives without lifting a finger. The Sisters argue they can’t be “complicit” in their employees obtaining the objectionable products or services, but don’t object to an employee using them. This case, and the related Trump v PA, (also heard May 6) should have decisions released in late June. Abortion Essential or Non-Essential? The status of which states have closed abortuaries as “non-essential” is ever changing and will become moot as states begin to reopen. Most likely, the ‘blue’ states will open last, but few have closed their abortion centers. Perhaps a future Court challenge of Roe will grow from a state that exercised its ‘emergency’ control of abortion. Children of God for Life has updated its list of ethical Corona vaccine developments. Sanofi Pasteur and partner GSK are not using aborted cells. Same for Inovio. But J&J and its partners, CanSino, Moderna, U of Pittburgh, and U of Oxford and its partners, all use unethical cells. The Charlotte Lozier Institute also has an Ethics Assessment of Covid-19 Vaccine Programs. See: https://cogforlife.org/wp-content/uploads/Covid-CompareMoralImmoral.pdf OR https://lozierinstitute.org/an-ethics-assessment-of-covid-19-vaccine-programs/ William Orrick, the judge in David Daleiden’s defamation suit vs Dr. Savita Ginde, released three (unredacted) 2012 invoic-es showing that Planned Parenthood Mar Monte billed Stem Express $55 per fetal organ and $10 per maternal blood sample.

Redacted invoices were released in 2016, after the House investi-gated David’s original Planned Parenthood videos. Daleiden et al appealed the $2M judgement against them in a prior RICO and trespass case vs. Planned Parenthood. Red Rose Rescue has rescheduled its first National Conference for Nov. 6 - 7, 2020, in St. Louis. The Reuters ‘style guide’ instructs reporters to use “aborted fetus”, not “aborted baby”. However, their April 27 story on disruptions and euthanasia in the meat supply-chain had no problem calling aborted pig fetuses “piglets”, “baby pigs” or “victims.”

NEW YORK STATE LEGISLATION New Yorkers for Constitutional Freedoms reported that Governor Cuomo’s Executive Order 202.23 canceled state leg-islative special elections (including LI’s 12th Assembly District) that were scheduled for June 23. Following this, the NYS Board of Elections canceled the June 23 NY Democratic presidential primary saying the primary was not necessary, especially given the health concerns due to the pandemic. After suspending his campaign, Bernie Sanders wanted to remain on the ballot in all remaining primaries to maximize his delegate count. A lawsuit filed by former candidate Andrew Yang claimed his rights were violated when his name was removed from the NY primary bal-lot. US District Court Judge Analisa Torres ruled all qualifying candidates had to be reinstated on the ballot. The decision stated that canceling the primary deprived candidates of “the opportu-nity to compete for delegate slots and shape the course of events at the Convention...The loss of these First Amendment rights is a heavy hardship.” All congressional and NYS Assembly and Senate prima-ry elections will be held on June 23. School Board elections have been postponed until June 9 and will be held by absentee ballot only, as well as public library elections. All village elections have been rescheduled until September 15. Executive Order 202.23 also required that all voters be mailed an absentee ballot for the primary. Executive Order 202.26 modified the requirement. Absentee ballots will be mailed upon request to any voter who is eligible to vote in the primary. The purpose is to allow NY voters the option of pro-tecting themselves from the coronavirus by not visiting the polls. In-person voting for the June 23 primary remains available as of this writing. The LICL sent Candidate Questionnaires to all June 23 House of Representative primary candidates. No replies were received as of May 7.

Sacred art is true and beautiful when its form corresponds to its particular vocation: evoking and glorifying, in faith and adoration, the transcendent mystery of God—the surpassing invisible beauty of truth and love visible in Christ, who "reflects the glory of God and bears the very stamp of his nature," in whom "the whole fullness of deity dwells bodily." This spiritual beauty of God is reflected in the most holy Virgin Mother of God, the angels, and saints. Genuine sacred art draws man to adoration, to prayer, and to the love of God, Creator and Savior, the Holy One and Sanctifier.”

CATHOLIC MINISTRIES APPEAL 2020

Letter to the Catholic Faithful of the Diocese of Rockville Centre

From Bishop John O. Barres Good Shepherd Sunday, May 3, 2020

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ:

On this Good Shepherd Sunday, we are reassured in the Gospel of Saint John (10:1-10) that Jesus Christ is our Good Shepherd and that He has come so we can "have life and have it more abundantly." During this uncertain time, I invite you to join me in meditating on this image of Jesus as the Good Shepherd caring for us and carrying us on his shoulders.

As we endure the cross of COVID-19, I want to thank you for your continued support of your parish and the Catholic Ministries Appeal. I know by virtue of the mail we continue to receive each day that so many of you are, in your own way, placing the vital ministries supported by the Appeal on your shoulders. On behalf of the countless people who have benefited from your support, I am most grateful. I also pray for those whose present circumstances prohibit ongoing support of the Appeal.

The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is an opportunity to support the ministries that help us as we build up the Body of Christ. Your support keeps the foundation of our Catholic Church alive as we evangelize and carry out the Gospel message. Your commitment, during these most difficult of times, is extraordinary and a blessing to our entire community of faith.

We are blessed that our parish outreach operations are robust and able to serve many additional families who find themselves, some for the first time, struggling in their respective communities. However, these outreach programs are straining to fulfill the growing demand and are in need ofadditional financial support. Catholic Charities continues to provide expanded homecare services, expanded Meals-On-Wheels programs and shopping services to those most vulnerable. They too are under great strain to meet the growing needs across the Diocese. If you or a family member is ever inneed of assistance, please contact the Catholic Charities helpline at (516) 733-7045.

We have also been working together with our Catholic schools to assist the underserved to get much needed internet service so that children can continue their education and parents can safely work from home.

During this unique time, there are so many ways to care for others and God's Church. One way, if you are able, is to provide assistance by making a special gift to the 2020 Catholic Ministries Appeal, if you have not already done so. Your continued support is critical at this time. Please visit https://www.drvc.org/donate/cma/ to make a secured online contribution. We are so grateful for your generosity and commitment.

On this Good Shepherd Sunday, I ask that you especially pray for a rich harvest of new vocations to the priesthood. Please know that you and your family are remembered in my daily prayers and Masses.

Sincerely in Christ,

Most Reverend John O. BarresBishop of Rockville Centre

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul.

Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally,

come at least spiritually into my heart.I embrace You as if You were already there and unite

myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.

Evangelization is our mission in the Church. It is the mission Jesus gave us when He said, “Go and make disciples of every nation…” (Matt. 28:19).

If we have been baptized into the Body of Christ, and given the Holy Spirit to share in Christ’s mission, we must do what He did: seek out the lost, gather people together, and share the good news of salvation. At the end of Mass, we are sent forth like the Apostles: “Go, and proclaim the Gospel with your life.”

The spiritual and corporal works of mercy also embody this call. The Catholic Ministries Appeal (CMA) is an opportunity to support the ministries that help us as we build up the Body of Christ.
