Man of Many Talents When you think of Jesus, what do you think was his job? Healer of the sick, the lame and the blind, as in today's gospel? Preacher? Teacher? Leader of men? Messiah? The second reading from Hebrews reminds us of his main duty: Priest. It calls him a High Priest, referring to the Jewish priesthood in which one priest was chosen each year to offer the most important sacri-fices and so appeal to God for forgiveness of the peo-ples' sins. Now this may sound like primitive religion, but it actually lets us understand Jesus even better. The high priest offered sacrifice for his own sins, as well as the peoples'. While Jesus did not sin, he experi-enced temptations just as we do and so can intercede for us as one who knows what it is like to be tempted. He also knows suffering, from his passion and death on the cross. If you ever wonder if you deserve to be for-given, remember that Jesus died for all sinners, deserv-ing or not. The High Priest was the one to bring the Israelites prayers to God and God's blessings to the people. Jesus also brings our prayers to his Father and shows us the Father's love. Our baptism gives us a share in that priesthood. You don't have to be ordained to pray for your friends and family. You don't have to be a bishop to bring God's love to those around you. When you listen to a friend who is hurting, or forgive someone who hurts you, you are blessing them with God's love. When you encour-age them to have faith and trust in the Lord, you are bringing them to God. You are sharing in the priest-hood of Christ. Tom Schmidt, Copyright (c) J. S. Paluch Co.

Hard to believe but Thanksgiving will soon be upon us. For many in our community with stressed budgets and financial challenges, a Thanksgiving dinner just isn’t possible. Your sup-port of our annual Food Drive will help make a fulfilling holiday possible for many families this season and also con-tinue to help throughout the year.

Our annual Thanksgiving Drive benefits Our Lady of Mercy and also St. John Neumann Food Pantry. Our ministry to the needy is combined with St. John Neumann to better assist our neighbors in need. Many families have benefit-ted from your support of this program.

GOSPEL OF LUKE

Soon a new liturgical year will begin. Can you believe it? In the new liturgical year the gospel readings will be drawn from the Gospel of Luke. Luke is an amazing Gos-pel; it is the only gospel with a Greek/Gentile au-thor. There are many things unique to this gospel and it reveals many aspects of Jesus and his ministry that are not found in the other gospels. On Tuesday, Nov 13 at 9:15 AM in the Church Hall and on Thursday, Nov 15 at 7 PM in the Parish Center we will have a teaching about this gos-pel. Like the gospel which it explores, this teaching will be presented in a new way. Please join us.

BLOOD DRIVE

A decision to donate your blood can save a life, or even several if your blood is separated into its components — red cells, platelets and plasma — which can be used individual-ly for patients with specific conditions.

A Blood Drive will be held here at Our Lady of Mercy on Thursday, November 15th from 2:00 pm to 7:00 pm in the Church Hall. Helping others in need just feels good. Please call 1-800-733-2767 or visit redcrossblood.org to schedule an appointment. Appointments are encouraged, but walk ins are always welcome.

Profession of Faith into Catholicism

If you were baptized in another faith but would like to become part of the Catholic faith community, please call Marie Dancy at 424-3757 and get started on the road to making a profession of faith into Ca-tholicism.

All Saint’s Day—November 1, 2018: all Saints’ Day is a solemn holy day of the Catho-lic Church celebrated annually on November 1st. The day is dedicated to the saints of the Church, that is, all those who have attained heaven. Mass times for this Holy Day are Thursday, November 1st at 8:30 am and 7:00 pm. There will be no anticipated Mass on October 31st.

During the month of November we take time to remember our loved ones who have passed away. Again this year you are asked to bring photos (framed or unframed) of a loved one who has died. Beginning on the weekend of October 27th and 28th, a table will be set up in the main entrance of the church to leave your photos. The photos will remain for the month of November. Make sure to put your name and phone number on the back of the pictures.

On November 2nd we celebrate All Souls Day. At the 7:00 pm Mass we will r ead aloud the names of those whose funeral Mass was celebrated in our parish during the past 12 months and a candle will be lit for each one. All parishion-ers are invited to attend this Mass and remember these and all of our beloved dead.

WOULD YOU LIKE TO DONATE A MISSAL IN MEMORY OF A LOVED ONE…..

A $25.00 donation can be made by an individual, a family or in memory of a loved one. The front cover of the missal will have a label with the name of the donor or deceased loved one. This can be a very meaningful way to express sympathy to a bereaved family or to honor someone who has passed away. To make a donation, please call the par-ish office at 424-3757.

PARISH BREAKFAST

Join us for another parish breakfast sponsored by the Knights of Columbus on Sunday, November 11, 2018 after the 8:30 and 10:30 masses. A blood pressure clinic spon-sored by our parish nurses will also take place at the same time .
