OUR LADY OF MERCY PARISH MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady of Mercy Parish is a Catholic community that worships God the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, celebrating Mass, proclaiming the Gospel Message and uniting in prayer. We strive to welcome all and to educate ourselves and others in the Good News of Jesus Christ. We support one another in times of joy and sadness and attempt to serve each other by reaching out to those in need in our community and beyond. We are imperfect people on a journey. Our goal is that the life of each person leads to the Lord.

LET US PRAY In your love and kindness please pray for the sick of our parish, especially: Kathryn Petrides, Patricia Bilz, Marie Barrett, Louis Glayat, Jim Flynn, and for those intentions listed in the book of intentions in the Vestibule. Please also remember the deceased of our parish and their families, especially: Raymond Paquette, Frederick J. Beddiges II, Grace Cipriani, Elda DiVincenzo, Josephine Gilligan, Eileen Morra, and Therese Romanek. Please join with us in praying one OUR FATHER per day for all those who have no one to pray for them. THE SANCTUARY LAMPS IN CHURCH burn this week in memory of: Elise Venusti, Murillo Family, and for Patrick Bourke.

THE SANCTUARY LAMP IN THE CHAPEL burns this week in memory of Jackie R. Lyda.

If you would like more information about reserving a Sanctuary Lamp in memory of a loved one or for a Special Intention, please call the rectory office at 201-391-5315.

GOD’S PLAN FOR GIVING – Tithing

October 14th: $19,175 Same time last year: $15,220

Tithing is God’s plan to support His Church. Full tithing means 10% of gross income to God. We ask half of this, or 5%, for your Parish church. The other 5% goes to your favorite charities.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTION

“For the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many.” MARK 10:45 If you held a mirror up to your life, would it reflect God’s love and mercy? If you are struggling with this, try changing your attitude from “I want more” to thank you God for everything you have given me, I have enough to share.” This change in perspective will bring you joy through service to others.

There are consecrated low gluten hosts available at all our Sunday Liturgies. They are made available during the reception of Communion near the ramp.

SHARING GOD’S BLESSINGS — To date we have received $58,136 in pledges. Our goal is $99,592. Thank you to those parishioners who have already shown their support and generosity.

• I have never been baptized.

• I am married to a Catholic and attend Mass, but just don’t know what the next step may be.

• I have been baptized in another Christian denomination and wish to become Catholic.

• I have been baptized Catholic, but have not received any other sacraments.

Do you know someone who might be interested in being in full communion with the Catholic Church? Ask, encourage and invite them to this program. The journey begins with one small step! Upcoming session: October 28 at 10:30AM in the Parish Center. Call John Rokoszak at 201-391-3590 or email [email protected] for more information.

Please pray for vocations to the Priesthood

PRAYER GROUPS

Dear brothers and sisters in Christ,

Our gospel today finds two of Jesus’ closest disciples making a vain and self-serving request: that one will sit at Jesus’ left and the other on his right when He comes in His glory.

In their vanity, they have no clue what they are asking. When Jesus asks if they can drink from the same cup from which He will drink, they say, ”yes we can!” – all the while not understanding for a moment that this will not be something fun!

When the other disciples get wind of this they are very annoyed that these two might jump ahead of them in line to, so to speak, sneak in on the “ground floor” of greatness! Indeed, they are just as clueless and just as self-serving.

Are you and I so different? Isn’t greatness, recognition, being “ahead of the curve,” at the top of the class, a champion in the game … are not all of these things immensely attractive to us?

So Jesus gives His disciples the same remedy that He intends also for you and for me. He reminds them that worldly rulers make their power felt; those over whom they rule are made to feel weak beneath such power. But Jesus tells His disciples and us: “It shall not be so among you!”

Because Jesus’ “greatness” comes from His service to us in and through giving His life to save us, our great-ness can only derive from His. Our greatness can only be a function of our service; by humble service – “slavery,” if you will – we discover and manifest a great-ness that this world cannot even pretend to offer!

God bless you all!

SECOND COLLECTION THIS WEEKEND World Mission Sunday—Pope Francis invites the entire Church to support the mission dioceses in Africa, Asia, the Pacific Islands, and parts of Latin America and Europe, where priests, religious and lay leaders serve the world’s most vulnerable communities.

OCTOBER— RESPECT LIFE MONTH Please join us in praying this simple prayer:
