Transcript of Our Lady of Lourdes Church, 121 Mains Road, Sunnybank Our Lady … · 2016-05-20 · Our Lady, Help...
Dear Parishioners,
Today we celebrate the feast of the Most Holy Trinity. We begin and end our prayers with the Sign of the Cross which is the sign of the Trinity. The Trinity is a mystery to be celebrated with childlike love and trust. Let us pray that the Eucharist we celebrate today deepens our relationship with the Holy Trinity.
Next Sunday is the feast of Corpus Christi. When I was young there was a huge gathering of Catholics in the Exhibition Grounds where a procession and benediction was held. Archbishop Duhig would always be quoted as saying that it was “ a great demonstration of faith”. Corpus Christi will be celebrated in the Cathedral of St Stephen next Sunday at 2.00pm including a procession through the streets of Brisbane, rosary and benediction. The prayers will be led by Bishop Joseph Oudeman. Everyone is invited to attend from 2.00pm to 4.15pm.
The Church building at Our Lady of Lourdes Sunnybank is slowly getting underway. Fences have been put up around the site for safety. This has caused some problem with parking for weekday Mass and other activities during the week. We hope to resolve some of the parking problems for weekdays. On Saturday night and Sunday there will still be parking on the grassed area at the back of the Church.
Celebrating Mass in Paloma at Sunnybank has been a good experience so far. At the larger Masses at 10.30am and 6.00pm, there are some people standing. Instead of standing at the back of the hall there is plenty of room on the driveway beside Paloma. You will notice we have added extra speakers in the hall and outside to enhance the sound. I ask you that you move towards the centre of the hall to allow all the seats to be used during Mass.
You can access some photos of different works going on around the Church site on our website olol.com.au.
Over the last 3 weeks we have been counting the number of people attending Masses in both our churches. At Sunnybank the counting shows that over the 3 weeks including moving into the Paloma for Mass, the numbers have slightly increased. At Acacia Ridge since the last official count Saturday evening Mass has been celebrated. Numbers at Acacia Ridge on Sunday morning have grown slightly since the last official count.
During the week we buried Don Ayre, the husband of Peggy. Peggy was our long serving Sacristan at Sunnybank and she is now living at Opal Raffin Place, Algester. We pray for Peggy and her family as we remember Don.
During the week, I attended some meetings in the Clergy Support Office. I will have a few meetings next week and beginning on 1st June, I will take up my new role as Vicar for Clergy on a part-time basis. However talking to the Archbishop's office and the Vicar General, I will be spending most of the week in the Clergy Support Office supporting the Priests and the Deacons of the Archdiocese. Fr Ladu, Fr Dom and the Parish staff will continue the wonderful pastoral care that is offered in this Parish and I will be assisting them.
God bless, Fr Dan

The Most Holy Trinity Sunday: Year C
Introduction: We come together in the name of our God, who is Trinity. We are called to be ‘a people made one by the unity of the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit’.
First Reading: Proverbs 8: 22-31 In the personified Wisdom of this passage, we have an early faint foreshadowing of what will be revealed in Jesus, the Word and the Wisdom of God.
Second Reading: Romans 5: 1-5 These versus from St Paul’s Letter to the Romans are clearly Trinitarian. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son, we have peace with the Father, and the love of God has been poured into our hearts by the Holy Spirit.
Gospel: John 16: 12-15 Everything the Father has belongs to Jesus, and the Spirit of truth takes from what belongs to Jesus to lead us into the complete truth.
YEAR OF MERCY FROM POPE FRANCIS So many people, including the youth, are returning to the Sacrament of Reconciliation; through this experience they are rediscovering a path back to the Lord, living a moment of intense prayer and finding meaning in their lives. Let us place the Sacrament of Reconciliation at the centre once more in such a way that it will enable people to touch the grandeur of God’s mercy with their own hands. For every penitent, it will be a source of true interior peace. I will never tire of insisting that confessors be authentic signs of the Father’s mercy. We do not become good confessors automatically. We become good confessors when, above all, we allow ourselves to be penitents in search of his mercy. Let us never forget that to be confessors means to participate in the very mission of Jesus to be a concrete sign of the constancy of divine love that pardons and saves. We priests have received the gift of the Holy Spirit for the forgiveness of sins, and we are responsible for this. None of us wields power over this Sacrament; rather, we are faithful servants of God’s mercy through it. [Misericordiae Vultus, No.17]
VOCATION VIEW: Human beings establish lasting loving bonds. But the Trinity shows us perfect love: you, God and neighbour. There’s nothing more than love. Love is the Trinity’s vocation.

SUNNYBANK SOCIAL JUSTICE COMMUNITY A NATION’S SHAME – WHAT NEXT?
We now have a total stalemate as regards the future of asylum seekers on Nauru and Manus. There is no future for them except to resettle in New Guinea, Nauru or Cambodia. The bishops have spoken out about the intransigence of both the major parties to provide a humane solution to the problem. Prominent Catholic social justice lawyer and priest, Father Frank Brennan SJ has proposed a solution which would prevent the asylum seekers who have committed no crime from spending their lives in prison. ‘The Turnbull government should move the asylum seekers to Christmas Island for processing. The government should guarantee that all refugee claims for this cohort would then be determined within 12 months, ie. by 12 May 2017. The government should also guarantee that all those proved to be refugees will be resettled within 18 months, ie. 12 November 2017. For many of these people, that will have meant a five year delay between initial detention and resettlement. The Labor Party should endorse the plan so that there is bi-partisan commitment to it. Both parties need to accept that the initial Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Government of PNG was posited on illegal, unconstitutional activity. If resettlement places cannot be provided for any proven refugees in this cohort by 12 November 2017, there will be no option but to resettle them in Australia.’ What do you think? The next meeting of the social justice community will be held in Paloma on 2nd June commencing at 7.00pm. All are very welcome to attend.
Thank You for the Keen & Lively Interest in the History of Our Lady of Lourdes Church
We wish to express our sincere thanks to all our Parishioners who shared such invaluable facts and
anecdotes at our PowerPoint presentation on "The History of Our Lady of Lourdes Church" last Saturday, 8th May.
We are quietly overwhelmed by the numbers who attended and the depth of interest in the history of our Church.
The Sunnybank District History Group which organised the event, have conveyed their deep appreciation to our
Parishioners for their rich and important contribution to the local Sunnybank history. We thank you for the free flowing exchange of information based on personal experiences.
We will definitely incorporate all the information for an updated edition of our PowerPoint presentation.
