This Third Sunday of Lent we are invited to encounter Jesus at Jacob’s well, we are invited to join the woman of Samaria and ask for the living water the Lord offers. This encounter at the well offers Jesus the perfect opportuni-ty to demonstrate once the unbounded, unconditional and over-flowing love of God. His encounter is with a woman —a Samari-tan woman, who is the personification of all that the religious leaders of the time publicly condemned and cast out. Surely it is exactly because this was a passionate and spirited woman that Jesus saw in her a perfect model of the way we all must be in our own love-lives-for God and for each other. He does not condone her five marriages, he even points out that her present love is not her husband; but he sees in her an eagerness and a readiness, and a longing for a love which will finally satisfy her questing heart... "Look around you and see how the fields are ripe for harvesting!" he tells the disciples. Then he demonstrates what he means by showing that this woman was ready for the gospel, not in spite of her suspicious morality, but precisely because of it. Jesus as ever goes to the heart, and sees in the Samaritan woman a nobility of spirit and a greatness of heart capable of responding completely to the promised Spirit who comes to be "poured into our hearts." That is the same nobility of spirit and greatness of heart he sees in those seeking new life through baptism, the same nobili-ty of spirit and greatness of hearts he wants to restore in each one of us. This weekend I invite you to recognize Christ as the font of new life,

Este Tercer Domingo de Cuaresma somos invitados a encontrar a Jesús en el pozo de Jacob, estamos invitados a unirnos a la mujer de Samaria y a pedir el agua viva que el Señor ofrece. Este encuentro en el pozo le ofrece a Jesús la oportunidad perfecta para demostrar una vez más el amor ilimitado, incondicional y desbor-dante de Dios. Su encuentro es con una mujer —una mujer Samaritana, que es la personificación de todo lo que los líderes religiosos de la época condenaron y expulsaron públicamente. Seguramente es porque era una mujer apasionada y vivaz que Jesús vio en ella un modelo per-fecto de la forma en que todos debemos ser en nuestras propias vidas de amor hacia Dios y hacia los demás. El no aprueba sus cinco matrimonios, incluso le señala que su amante no es su esposo; pero él ve en ella un entusiasmo y una dis-posición, y el deseo de un amor que finalmente satisfaga su corazón anhelante... "¡Miren los campos, que ya están dorados para la cosecha!" le dice a los discípulos. Luego les demuestra lo que quiere decir mostrando que esta mujer estaba lista para el evangelio, no a pesar de su moralidad sospechosa, sino precisamente por ella. Jesús como siempre va al corazón y ve en la mujer Samaritana una nobleza de espíritu y una grandeza de corazón capaz de responder completamente al Espíritu prometido que viene a ser "derramado en nuestros corazones". This weekend we welcome the Reverend Alfred Lopez, O.P. who will be presiding and preaching at all the Masses this weekend. Fa-ther Lopez is with us on behalf of “Food for the poor,” a Catholic charity organization. He will share with us his personal experiences of work-ing with “Food for the Poor” and their mission to care of our poor brothers and sisters. El padre López fue ordenado para la Orden de Predicadores, los Dominicos en 1984. El p. Al fue capellán en la University of New Mexico y Consejero para el Departamento de Trabajo Social Clínico en la Unidad de Trauma de esa

universidad. El ha enseñado Historia Latinoamericana en la North-ern Michigan University y en el Dominican College de San Rafael. Además de trabajar para Alimentos para los pobres, él trabaja con comunidades Latinas en St. Louis y en Chicago.

Este fin de semana damos la bienvenida al Reverendo Alfred Lopez, O.P. quien presidirá y predicará en todas las Misas de este fin de sema-na. El padre Lopes está con nosotros represen-tando a “Alimentos para los pobres”, una organi-zación de Caridad católica. El compartirá con nosotros su experiencia personal de trabajar con “Alimentos para los pobres” y su mission de cuidar de nuestras hermanas y hermanos pobres. Father Lopez was ordained for the Order of Preachers, the Dominicans in 1984. Fr. Al has served at the campus of the University of New Mexico and as a Counselor for the Department of Clinical Social Work in the Trauma Unit there. He has taught Latin American History at Northern Michigan University and the Dominican College in San Rafael. Besides working for Food For the Poor, he works among the Latino community in St. Louis and Chicago.

Jesus is the Living Water Third Sunday of Lent Week of March 19, 2017 Listen to the Word (John 4:5 — 42) In this long story, what image or scene did you see in your mind’s eye? What phrase or word caught your ear? Look into Your Life Question for children: How do you experience Jesus helping and loving you? Question for youth: Jesus revealed himself to an outcast of so-ciety. How can you be “living water” to the outcasts of your school? Society? The world? Question for adults: When you are tempted to try to satisfy your “thirst for meaning” through some other means, what keeps you coming back to the living water of intimacy with Christ? Through what means do you experience Christ’s power in your life: Sacra-ments? Scripture? Prayer? Others? Activities for the week The Samaritan woman felt free to change because she felt that Jesus loved and accepted her. As a family, talk about how we feel when someone in the family wants us to change. Why does it help when you know that the one who is making the request loves you? Why is it important for us to affirm the good we see in one ano-ther? How does knowing Jesus help us to change for the better? Create a centerpiece for the dinner table on the theme of water. You may want to use a dish of water, a flower to float in the water, or a candle that floats in the water. Go around the table and have family members answer this question. How is Jesus satisfying a thirst of yours? Place a bowl of water in the center of a table in your home. Form a circle around the bowl of water. Remind the family of the story of Jesus and the Samaritan woman and of Jesus’ statement that he will give us living water that brings eternal life. Invite each family member to place his or her hand in the water and bless him or herself. When everyone has blessed themselves say: Let your Living Water refresh our lives. Use the story of the woman at the well to show how Jesus accepted the outcast. Discuss with your family: Who are the out-casts and strangers who live in our community? What does it mean to welcome them, and accept them for who they are?

Scrip-ture says her testimony drew many others to him as well. We, too, must be ready to respond whenever and wherever the Lord speaks to us and be prepared for it to change our lives!

Prayer for the Elect — Oración por los Elegidos We invite you to pray for our elect and catechumens during Lent and always!

God of love and power, it is your will to establish everything in Christ and to draw us into his all embracing love. Guide these elect of your Church in the days and weeks ahead: strengthen them in their vocation, build them into the kingdom of your Son, and seal them with the Spirit of your promise. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen. Padre de amor y poder, tu voluntad es establecer todo en Cristo y atraernos a su amor que abraza todo. Guía a estos elegidos de tu Iglesia en los próximos días y semanas: fotalécelos en su vocación, intégralos en el reino de tu Hijo, y séllalos con el Espíritu que nos prometiste. The scrutinies los escrutinios

El 5 de marzo, algunos de nuestros catecúmenos en el proceso de RICA celebraron el Rito de Elección con el Arzobispo Gregory, ex-presando así su deseo de ser plenamente iniciados en la Iglesia Católica mediante los sacramentos del Bautismo, la Confirmación y la Eucaristía. Uno de los próximos pasos en su caminar de fe es partici-par en el ritual de los Escrutinios. Estas celebraciones rituales en el Tercer, Cuarto y Quinto Domin-gos de Cuaresma son oraciones comunitarias celebradas alrededor de los Elegidos para fortalecerlos en preparación para su iniciación. La comunidad no examina los catecúmenos; los catecúmenos escudriñan sus propias vidas y permiten que Dios los escudriñe y los sane. Nosotros celebraremos el Primer Escrutinio de los Elegidos este miércoles 22 de marzo en la Misa de las 6:30 pm; el Segundo Escru-tinio será el domingo 26 de marzo en la Misa de las 5:30 pm. Las lecturas del evangelio para los Escrutinios son el de la mujer Samaritana, el ciego de nacimiento y el evangelio de Lázaro. A través de estas lecturas del evangelio, su espíritu se llena de Cristo, que es el agua viva (primer escrutinio), la luz del mundo (segundo escrutinio) y la resurrección y la vida (tercer escrutinio). Incluso si no se celebran los Escrutinios en la Misa a la que asisti-mos, o incluso si no se celebran en nuestra parroquia, siempre es maravilloso reflexionar sobre el caminar de fe de los Elegidos como inspiración y fuente de renovación para nosotros en nuestra propio caminar de fe.

On March 5, some of our catechumens in the RCIA process celebrated the Rite of Election with Archbishop Gregory, express-ing their desire to be fully initiated into the Catholic Church through the sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and the Eucha-rist. One of the next steps in their faith journey is to participate in the ritual of the Scrutinies. These ritual celebrations on the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sun-days of Lent are communal prayers celebrated around the Elect to strengthen them in preparation for initiation. The community does not scrutinize the catechumens; the catechumens scrutinize their own lives and allow God to scrutinize them and to heal them. We will celebrate the First Scrutiny for the Elect this Wednes-day, March 22 a the 6:30pm Mass; the Second Scrutiny will be on Sunday, March 26 at the 5:30pm Mass. The gospel readings for the Scrutinies are those of the Samari-tan woman, the man born blind and the gospel of Lazarus. Through these gospel readings their spirit is filled with Christ, who is the living water (first scrutiny), the light of the world (second scrutiny), and the resurrection and the life (third scrutiny). Even if the Scrutinies are not celebrated at the Mass we attend, or even if they are not celebrated in our parish at all, it is always wonderful to reflect upon the journey of faith of the Elect as an inspiration and source of renewal for us in our own journey of faith.

We are called to build a culture of encounter. Jesus made that clear from the way he lived, the message he preached. Pope Fran-cis makes that clear by his own daily example. And we have a host of holy men and women who have come before us, who have gone to the margins of society so that every member of our human family might know the love of God. Our faith calls us to build a culture of encounter. As we continue our Lenten journey, we are invited to reflect on how as people of faith we can contribute to this culture of encounter. Estamos llamados a construir una cultura de encuentro. Jesús lo hizo claramente con la manera como vivió el mensaje que predicó. El papa Francisco lo hace claro con su ejemplo diario. CHRIST, THE LIVING WATER There are three pivotal actions in this Sundays Gospel. Jesus begins this action by asking for a drink, the woman responds by asking for his water, and then he shares the Good News about the Messiah. In the Sacrament of Baptism, it is the Holy Spirit that comes through us through the symbol of water. The Spirit is called down upon the water in the font, which becomes the sign of our new birth in Christ. Just as we were born once at our natural birth, at Baptism we are born in to God’s life through the action of the Holy Spirit. Jesus Christ, who is the “Living Water” gives us rebirth in water and the Spirit. (Catechism of the Catholic Church, 694)

CRISTO, AGUA VIVA Hay tres acciones fundamentales en el Evangelio de este domingo. Jesús comienza pidiendo de beber, la mu-jer responde pidiéndole su agua, y el comparte las bue-nas nuevas acerca del Mesías. Job Opening at La Salette We seek to fill a part-time (20 hours per week) parish maintenance position. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: grounds keeping, minor repairs and upkeep, primary contact with vendors, running errands, and housekeeping of Church and Parish Center.
