Community and Family Catechesis — Catequésis Comunitaria y Familiar

Jesus, our cornerstone Fifth Sunday of Easter Week of May 10, 2020 Listen to the Word (John 14:1 – 12) In this lovely reading from John’s Gospel, what phrases or words or images catch your ear? What promise of Christ do you hear most clearly? Look into your life Question for children: What are some ways that you can act like Jesus would if he were in your situation? Question for youth: Jesus is “the way, the truth, the life” and he asks us to do as he does. How do you try to follow Jesus’ way? Question for adults: How are the promises of this Gospel passage made real in your own life? How do you experience yourself doing greater works than even Jesus did? Take these to further reflect: Talk to your family about someone who works for our par-ish or someone who voluntarily offers time and talent to serve those who are in need in our community, especially during these days of crisis because of COVID-19. Write a letter of support to this person thanking him or her for their service and for living the kind of way of life that Jesus calls us to fol-low. Provide each family member with construction paper to make road signs that lead to God. Discuss with your family how Jesus gives direction to our lives. Conclude with a family prayer expressing faith in Jesus as the way, the truth, and the life. Now that we are spending more time together, gather with your family at mealtime and talk about the troubles of these days. Remind each other that we need to place our troubles in the hands of the Lord. For the mealtime prayer, reread the Gospel reading for this Sunday (John 14:1-12) to your family. Play the game, “Follow the leader” as a family. Have a fa-mily discussion about what it means to follow the way of the Lord.

RELEASING THE HOLY One day God noticed a huge racket going on around a man in Italy. Day after day, this man ham-mered and chiseled away at stone; it was as if he had discovered something alive inside it and with determina-tion and passion he labored to set it free. From pieces of marble that he himself had chosen from the Carrara quarries, he set about “releasing” magnificent figures. Yet even God was surprised at what was emerging out of the stone this time. The mans was trying to set God free! God went to visit the sculptor. “Michelangelo,” God said, “what exactly are you doing?” “Lord,” he answered, “I am setting you free, so everyone will recognize you, not only in this stone, but in all those who suffer unjustly and die vio-lently at the hands of others and those who mourn for them. I don’t want people to forget what you did for us.” The Lord spoke again to Michelangelo: “Hmm. In times past I have stayed in rocks and mountains, wells and tombs, and in the Ark of mu Temple, but I don’t remember living in the stone you are working on now.” Michelangelo answered, “Lord, as I see it, since your Son came to us, you don’t have to pick and choose your places of rest. He left us your Holy Spirit everywhere; we just have to search it out, discover it, touch it, and reveal it to others.” The Lord was more than happy with what Michel-angelo had said and left him to get back to work. Michelangelo chipped away at the huge piece of marble and slowly, very slowly, the sculptor set free the figure of a woman holding the body of her dead son in her lap. DEJANDO SALIR LO SAGRADO Un día Dios se fijó en el gran ruido que hacía un hombre, esto fue en Italia. Todos los días este hombre martillaba y cincelaba una piedra, como si hubiese descubierto algo vivo dentro de ella, y se empeñara con determinación y passion a dejarlo salir. De los pedazos de mármol que él mismo había escogido de las canteras de Carrara se propuso a “sacar” fig-uras grandiosas. Pero aun Dios se sorprendió al ver lo que estaba emergiendo de la piedra esta vez. ¡El hombre estaba tratando de dejar salir a Dios! Dios fue a visitor al escultor y le dijo: “Miguel Angel, ¿qué es lo que estás hacienda?” Le respondió el

hombre: “Señor, estoy tratando de dejarte salir para que to-dos te reconozcan, no sólo en esta piedra, sino en todos los que sufren injustamente y mueren bajo la violencia de otros, y en aquellos que lloran esa pérdida. No quiero que la gente se olvide de lo que hiciste por nosotros”. El Señor volvió a dirigirse a Miguel Angel: “Mmm. En tiem-pos pasados me he quedado en roca y cerros, pozos y tum-bas, y en el arca de mi templo, pero no recuerdo vivir en la piedra que cincelas ahora.” Miguel Angel le contesta: “Señor, a mí me parece que desde que tu Hijo vino a vivir entre nosotros, tú no tienes que escoger los lugares para descansar, pues él dejó tu Espíritu Santo en todos los lugares; a nosotros solo nos queda bus-carlo, descubrirlo, tocarlo y revelárselo a los demás.” El Se-ñor se quedó bien content con lo que le dijo Miguel Angel y lo dejó dejó para que siguiera trabajando. Miguel Angel continúo cincelando en aquel pedazo enor-me de mármol y lentamente, muy lentamente, el escultor dejó salir la figura de una mujer con el cuerpo inerte de su Hijo en su regazo. María, nuestra intercesora y defensora, contigo elevamos nuestras oraciones por los enfermos y los que sufren, por los científicos, investigadores, médicos, enfermeras, personal de primeros auxilios, proveedores de atención médica, trabajadores esen-ciales, los pobres, los desplazados, los miembros marginados y los más vulnerables de la sociedad; intercede por ellos para que no abandonen nunca la esperanza, y para que confíen en el Dios que nos da la vida. También elevamos en oración a to-dos los que han muerto como resultado de la pandemia de COVID-19, y de actos de violencia, terrorismo, perse-cución religiosa y crímenes de odio; ayúdales con tu intercesión para que compartan la vida eterna con el autor de toda la vida.

Mary, our intercessor and advocate, with you we lift up our prayers for the sick and the suffe-ring, for scientists, researchers, doctors, nurses, first responders, healthcare providers, essential workers, the poor, the displaced, the marginalized and most vulnerable members of society; intercede for them to never abandon hope, but to place their trust in the God who gives us life. We also lift up in prayer all who have died as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and of random, senseless acts of violence, terrorism, religious persecution, and hate crimes; assist them with your intercession that they may share life eternal with the author of all life.

Loving God, as a mother gives life and nourishment to her children, so you watch over your Church. Bless all the women in our parish, that they may be strengthened by your grace. May the example of their faith and their love shine forth. Grant that we all may continue to honor them always with a spirit of profound respect. Through Christ our Lord.

Y como si te hubiese recibido, me abrazo y me uno del todo a ti; Señor, no permitas que me separe de ti. Amén.

My Jesus, I believe that you are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love you above all things, and I desire to receive you into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive you sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace you as if you were already there and unite myself wholly to you. Never permit me to be separated from you. Amen.
