Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

There are many places around the globe where the Church

struggles to be a visible sign of charity, but thankfully, the Holy

Father is the pilgrim of charity for Catholics everywhere. In poor

dioceses where many are dependent on the Church for social

and pastoral support; in regions where Catholics are persecuted

for their faith; and in nations overloaded with refugees and vic-

tims of war and natural disasters, the works done by the Holy

Father help the Church extend charity to those most in need.

The Peter's Pence Collection gives us the opportunity to be pilgrims

of charity around the world. Our gifts to this annual Collection help

the Holy Father strengthen dioceses, religious orders, and strug-

gling communities of faith when they need it most.

Many who struggle to survive rely on pilgrims of charity to assist

them through their difficulties. Please give generously to the Col-

lection and know that in doing so, you become a pilgrim of charity

around the globe.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo,

Alrededor del mundo existen muchos lugares en donde la Iglesia lucha por

ser una sefial visible de caridad pero, afortunadamente, el Santo Padre es

un peregrina de la caridad para todos los catolicos. En di6cesis pobres, en

donde muchos dependen de la Iglesia para recibir apoyo social y pastoral;

en regiones, en donde los cat6licos son persiguidos a causa de su fe; y en

naciones sobrecargadas de refugiados y de las victimas de guerra y de

desastres naturales, la labor que hace el Santo Padre ayuda ala Iglesia a

extender su caridad a aquellos que mas la necesitan.

La Colecta Peter's Pence nos brinda a cada uno la oportunidad de ser peregri-

nos de la caridad en el mundo. Lo que donamos a esta Colecta anual ayuda

al Santo Padre a fortalecer di6cesis, 6rdenes religiosas y comunidades de fe

que luchan por salir adelante cuando estas mas lo necesitan.

Muchos de los que luchan por sobrevivir dependen de los peregrinos de la

caridad para que los ayuden durante sus momentos dificiles. Por favor,

contribuya generosamente ala Colecta y sepa que, al hacerlo, usted se

convierte en un peregrina de la caridad en el mundo.

Snippets from the Catechism: The Gospel of Luke

The Gospel for this Sunday is Lk 9: 51 - 62

The gospel today reminds us that, despite full knowledge that the cross awaited Him in Jerusalem, Jesus “resolutely determined to jour-

ney to Jerusalem.” Luke makes it quite clear; the cross is not something that “happened” to Jesus. The cross is the essence of His mis-

sion. Paragraph 557 of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) discusses the nature of Jesus’ journey to Jerusalem (and the cross

that awaited Him) as Jesus’ own free choice, despite much opposition. Paragraph 569 sums it up nicely for us: “Jesus went up to Jerusa-

lem voluntarily, knowing well that there He would die a violent death because of the opposition of sinners (cf. Heb 12:3).” On His way

to Jerusalem, Jesus met much opposition from the strangers in the Samaritan town and from His own disciples. This gospel also asks us

to look at the elements of our own lives that impede our own discipleship.

El Evangelio de hoy nos recuerda que, a pesar de pleno conocimiento de que la cruz que le esperaba en Jerusalén, Jesús "decidido resuel-

tamente de ir a Jerusalén." Lucas deja claro, la cruz no es algo que "sucedió" a Jesús. La cruz es la esencia de su misión. El párrafo 557

del Catecismo de la Iglesia Católica (CIC) analiza la naturaleza del viaje de Jesús a Jerusalén (y la cruz que le esperaba) como la libre

elección de Jesús, a pesar de mucha oposición. El párrafo 569 lo resume muy bien para nosotros: "Jesús subió a Jerusalén voluntariamen-

te, sabiendo bien que allí moriría de muerte violenta a causa de la oposición de los pecadores (cf. Heb 12,03)." En su camino a Jerusalén,

Jesús encontró mucha oposición por parte de los extranjeros en la ciudad de Samaria y de sus propios discípulos. Este evangelio también

nos invita a mirar a los elementos de nuestra vida que impiden nuestro discipulado.

...”...Last year when I asked what financial matter we should focus on as a parish family the overwhelming response was to pay off the long-term debt. Since then we have increased our support of the debt reduction drive a little but really not significantly….I am inviting everyone to join me in signing up to pay $1,700 toward the debt reduction. Faith Direct gives us many ways to structure the automatic payments over time. I am going to pay with regular charges to my credit card and by next year at this time I will have paid off my $1,700 share of our debt. Please give serious consideration to joining me.
