January 27, 2019 • Third Sunday In Ordinary Time 3

“He came to Nazareth, where He had grown up.” Did you grow up in a small town? Whenever you see stories of "ght-knit communi"es, a common refrain is that everybody knows everybody, and that’s very difficult to change. If you leave and return, people expect you to be and act a certain way, and it’s strange for them if you do not. In today’s Gospel, we see that Jesus was already moving “in the power of the Spirit, and news of Him spread throughout the whole region. He...was praised by all.” His ministry has begun! News of His growing popularity must have proceeded Him to Nazareth.

Upon His arrival, He “went according to His custom into the synagogue on the Sabbath day.” For the first few moments, He is what they expect – their hometown boy returning to pay His respects. As was common of men at the "me, He takes a turn reading a passage of Sacred Scripture. It is a bold passage, one He selects inten"onally. “He unrolled the scroll and found the passage where it was wri!en: The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me.” A&er reading about holy anoin"ngs, libera"on for the poor and prisoners, and physical healings, Jesus does the unthinkable. “Today this Scripture passage is fulfilled in your hearing.” We are all called to imitate Christ wherever we are. This might mean doing the unexpected! All too o&en we’re content with the daily status quo, and so are the people around us. When we take a stand for Chris"an values, change our lifestyle to reflect the Gospel, and work for jus"ce in society, we may make others uncomfortable. But Jesus doesn’t call us to the same life we lived yesterday, or the year before that. He is calling all of us – each and every one of us – to deeper conversion of heart. No ma*er what other people expect, will you love in the Spirit of the Lord today? ©Liturgical Publica"ons Inc

Gospel Medita!on – Encourage Deeper Understanding Of Scripture January 27, 2019 – Third Sunday In Ordinary Time

Feast Of The Presenta!on Of The Lord There is something about children that makes people smile. Their innocence, hopefulness, and amazing and amusing things they say and do bring out good quali"es in people. Bring a child into a nursing home, and watch people light up. Or walk into a store with a 2 year old, and see people smile. Or watch when a dad carries a toddler on his shoulders, and even people driving by smile. Simeon must have smiled at Jesus. He saw more than just an infant smiling and proud parents. He knew he looked upon the hope and promise of Israel. He saw his “heir apparent,” the priest, prophet, and king who would bring the message of salva"on to the world. Simeon no doubt smiled as he gazed upon the infant so many had longed to see.

Joy is a very important part of faith. Knowing the Lord, and sharing in His life should bring us a sense of joyfulness and peace, if we really believe in the promises of Jesus. Too o&en people leave Church the same way they leave a root canal!! We know and have seen for ourselves the great work of love and hope that God has done. We are His heirs! ©2003 Liturgical Publica"ons Inc

Men And Women’s Bible Study Now Through

April 14th How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a "me. We do this by going over two chapters of the scripture with a Catholic commentary. Mee"ngs are on the Second and Fourth Sundays of the month in the Hayes Community Room at 7PM, and last about 90 minutes. Become a be*er version of yourself. Be generous with God, and spend some "me with Him. E-mail us any ques"ons, or if you want a copy of what we cover in a session at:

bible.study@ourladyo!umility.org.

Our next session is this Sunday, January 27th, we will be covering The Book of Judges Chapters 9 & 10.

Scholas!c “Dino-Mite” Book Fair Gree"ngs from the Library! Stomp on down to the “Dino-Mite” Book Fair during the OLH Open House in celebra"on of Catholic Schools Week.

We will be open in the School Library this Sunday, January 27th, from 8AM un"l 12:30PM. For your convenience, the Book Fair accepts Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and secured debit cards. As always, we appreciate your kind and generous support.

Hospitality How many of you sit in about the same pew at the same Mass every Sunday? I am willing to bet it is the majority of us. Now, how many people see the same people in the pews next to them, behind them, or

maybe in front of them each week? First of all, good job coming to Mass each week! The big ques"on is, how many of those people do you know by name? Unfortunately, for the majority of parishioners, the answer would be, “very few.” The OLH Evangeliza"on Commi*ee has begun a Hospitality Commi*ee to change that. We want people to get to know each other, along with making new parishioners and visitors feel welcome. We want to have Greeters at each Mass, form a Welcoming Team, and offer hospitality-related ac"vi"es, so that we may increase our Mass a*endance. To do this, we need help. We are looking for friendly, crea"ve people that can help us put these plans into ac"on. Your "me commitment could be as li*le as 15 minutes before Mass once a month as a Greeter, or maybe you are someone who loves to help organize events. For more informa"on, you can call Peggy Reid at the Rectory at (847) 872-8778.

Knights Of Columbus Blood Drive

The Knights of Columbus are sponsoring their Semi-Annual Blood Drive on Sunday, February 10th, from 8AM un"l 2PM in the Parish Center. There will be sign-up next weekend, February 2nd and 3rd. Please note the date change. There is a cri"cal shortage of blood in the Blood Bank serving Chicago and the surrounding areas. Every pint of blood that is donated, helps at least 3 people. Please donate YOUR blood on Sunday, February 10th.

Our Lady Of Humility Women’s Club Upcoming February Events – Bingo For The Residents At The Grove By The Lake Nursing Home In Zion

On Thursday, February 21st, from 1:30–3PM: We will host Bingo for the residents at The Grove By The Lake in Zion. Bingo at The Grove is an Annual Service Project that Our Lady of Humility Women’s Club host. The residents look forward to Bingo, and we enjoy hos"ng. Volunteers are to meet in the Lobby at 12:30PM at The Grove. Please encourage as many women as you can to par"cipate, as many are needed to assist the residents. Please bring purchased and packaged cookies, etc. (no homemade goods due to changes in state law). It is through the generosity of our Parishioners that we have sufficient prizes for the residents. Thank you! Also, the Women’s Club will be collec"ng items to donate to the residents. The residents always appreciate all we do for them. Items such as casual, everyday clothing (large), toiletries, books, shirts, sweaters, hats, gloves, scarves, lo"ons, sta"onery, jewelry, small boxes of purchased and packaged candy or cookies, and anything you feel would make a nice gi& for a nursing home resident are appreciated. Anything you would like to receive as a gi&, would truly make the residents happy. There is a box designated for the residents at The Grove By The Lake in the Ves"bule between the Church and Parish Center for items being donated for this cause. Thank you from the Ladies of Our Lady of Humility Women’s Club, and the residents at The Grove By The Lake, and thank you for helping to bring some cheer to those less fortunate.

Refreshments will be served following our mee"ng.

Catholic Tradi!ons The Feast of the Presenta"on, o&en called Candlemas, commemorates the purifica"on of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and the presenta"on of Christ in the temple, which occurred 40 days a&er His birth as prescribed by the Jewish law.

Luke tells us, quo"ng Exodus 13:2,12, that Mary and Joseph took Jesus to Jerusalem because every firstborn child was to be dedicated to the Lord. Once in the temple, Simeon, upon seeing the Messiah, gave thanks to the Lord, singing a hymn now called the Nunc Dimi+s:

Lord, now You let Your servant go in peace, Your word has been fulfilled:

My own eyes have seen the salva#on, which You have prepared in the sight of every people:

a light to reveal You to the na#ons and the glory of Your people Israel.

The name Candlemas is derived from the ac"vi"es associated with the feast. It came to be known as the Candle Mass. In the Western Church, a procession with lighted candles is the dis"nc"ve rite. According to post Va"can-II discipline, (if possible), the beeswax candles are to be blessed somewhere other than where the Mass is held. O&en your local parish will hand out candles, or you may bring your own, to be blessed before the procession. These may be saved for later use in your home. A&er an an"phon, during which the candles held by the people are lit, there is a procession into the Church. During the procession to the Church, the Nunc Dimi+s is sung, with the an"phon “Lumen ad revela#onem” (Luke 2:32). This procession into the Church for Mass commemorates Christ’s entrance into the temple. Since Va"can II, the Feast is reckoned a Feast of the Lord (as opposed to a Feast of Mary), and officially designated “The Presenta#on of The Lord”.

Uganda Seminarian Ministry We are running our semi-annual appeal for the Uganda Seminarian Ministry now through the end of February. A semester at the seminary costs $300 for tui"on, housing, and food for each Seminarian. This is a fortune in Uganda. If you would like to help the Seminarians, you can do it in one of two ways.

1. Contribute to the Fund for “Those in Greatest Need” 2. Sponsor a Seminarian ($600/Academic Year)

If you decide to Sponsor, then you must mark that op"on on the envelope, so that the OLH Business Manager will be able to let the seminary officials know. If it is not designated, it will go to “Those in Greatest Need”. If you Sponsor a Seminarian, you will then correspond with your Seminarian via E-mail. Checks are wri*en to “Our Lady of Humility” (this money will be on your year-end tax statement from OLH). Two "mes a year OLH will send a check from this Fund to the Chicago Archdiocese Mission Office, and that Office will transfer the funds electronically to the Kasana-Luweero Diocese in Uganda. There are colored envelopes at the Church doors. Please use these so that the money will not be misdirected. They can be put in the Collec"on Basket, or delivered to the Rectory by Thursday, February 28, 2019. For more informa"on, please contact: Linda Bugos-Noble at [email protected]; or Gloria Askew at [email protected].

OLH Teen Ministry Again this year, the teens will be par"cipa"ng in the Souper Bowl of Caring. This is a teen-led na"onal movement that raises money for local food-related chari"es. It is held every year on Super Bowl weekend (February 2nd–3rd this year – next weekend). Every year OLH parishioners have donated over $1,000 which goes to our OLH Food Pantry. This event challenges every person in a*endance at all of the Masses to donate one dollar (more is be*er) to the soup pots that will be held by teens at the doors of the Church a&er Mass. Let’s tackle hunger together.

Above are the six priests that were ordained by Bishop Ssemogerere.
