There Are Angels God Puts On This Earth
Who care for us and guide us. You can feel their love and gentleness
as they walk through life beside us.
They do great things for us every day, they whisper in our ears,
they even hold us in their hearts when we are filled with all our fears.
They are always there to give a hug, and try to make us smile.
They treat us with respect and love, they treat us like their child.
God blessed me with an Angel, I’m proud to call my own.
She’s been with me throughout my life, been with me as I’ve grown.
She’s guided me the best she can, she’s taught me like no other,
and I’m thankful I’m the lucky one who get’s to call her…

beauty and fragility of life. Roses will be available for the following suggested dona"ons: $2 for One

advocacy efforts of Lake County Right to Life. Please note that last year, we ran out of Roses at the 9AM
Mass; we have ordered addi"onal Roses for this year.
This weekend at all of the Masses we will have a very brief in-pew survey to gather some basic
informa"on. The survey will be anonymous. You may also fill out the survey online via a link on the OLH
website.

Ask A Priest Q: Why do (some) Non-Catholics claim that Catholics are not Chris"ans?
Part 3
A: Welcome to Part 3 of my bulle"n series trying to answer this ques"on. If you miss an ar"cle, or have any follow-up
ques"ons/clarifica"ons, or would like to propose another possible argument, please feel free to E-mail me.
******************************
Argument #2: Catholics pervert and contort Ma#hew 16:18; in fact, the “Rock” Jesus referred to was not Peter, but Himself.
Because of this perversion, Catholics then claim that the Pope is ‘infallible.’ The truth is that only God is infallible; all men are
born corrupt, because of our fallen ancestors.
******************************
This Argument almost looks good on the surface, but it betrays the fundamental problem of a worldview that iden"fies itself
through what it is not. Think about it; the very "tle ‘Protestant’ professes an ideology that we are protes!ng something! And
what is it that is being protested? This misconstrued idea of Papal and Magisterial authority.
Clearly, Ma#hew 16:17-19 is a very difficult pill to swallow for those who wish to reject Petrine authority, so it must be
minimized as much as possible.
“Blessed are you, Simon son of Jonah. For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. And so I say
to you, you are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church (ekklesia), and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail
against it. I will give you the keys to the kingdom of heaven. Whatever you bind on earth shall be bound in heaven; and
whatever you loose on earth shall be loosed in heaven.”
There is a play on words in Greek that Jesus uses in this passage. He calls Simon ‘Petros,’ a masculine noun meaning stone or
pebble. And He says on this ‘Petra’ I will build my Church; a feminine noun meaning bedrock, an unmovable object. The
argument goes that, because Jesus changed the word, Peter is not the ‘Petra’ that is being referenced; Jesus is actually
referring to Himself as the bedrock on which the Church is to be established.
Except…this is a play on words! It is a common literary device, that is used throughout the Gospels (examples: Mt 23:23,
Jn 3:8, Lk 3:8). In Verse 17, Jesus refers to him as Simon bar Jonah. This suggests that the passage was originally circulated in
Aramaic; that it is a pre-Ma#hean tradi"on which Ma#hew inserted into his Greek text. In Aramaic, Kepha refers to both
pebble and bedrock. The play on words is even more perfect; it actually is Peter upon whom Jesus intends to build His Church!
As for Verse 19, most Protestant commentaries either avoid it completely, or go to great lengths to downplay its significance.
Throughout the rest of the Gospels and the Acts of the Apostles, however, the priority of Peter is on full display. He is the
spokesman, he is the decision maker, and Tradi"on relates that he is the one who went to Rome, where his successor remains
today.
Let us briefly address papal infallibility, as it is another hot-bu#on issue about which people like to protest. I invite you to read
an outstanding ar"cle on the subject; Papal Infallibility, by Jeffrey Mirus, PhD (it is available online). Here is an abbreviated
version.
Christ promised to be with the Church always to the end of "me, and said that the powers of hell would not prevail against it.
Now, clearly Christ knew that Peter would not live un"l the end of "me, so He must have intended that the power He gave to
Peter would be carried on un"l His return. If these special and essen"al powers were to pass out of existence, it would be
proof that Christ was no longer with His Church, and that the powers of Hell had indeed prevailed. Therefore, again, Christ
must have intended successors to Peter.
Since the successors of Peter have the same Petrine authority, which comes ul"mately from Christ, to bind and loose, they
have the authority to bind the faithful in ma#ers pertaining to salva"on – that is, in faith or morals. Now, if a Pope could bind
the faithful to error, it would be a clear triumph of the powers of Hell, because the en"re Church would be bound to follow the
error under Christ’s own authority.
Infallibility does not mean that the Pope is sinless, it does not mean that he never makes mistakes (Peter himself is rebuked by
Christ in Mt 16:22, just a few lines a&er receiving the keys!). Infallibility means that when the Pope intends to teach by virtue
of his supreme authority on a ma#er of faith and morals to the whole Church, he is preserved by the Holy Spirit from error.
What an incredible gi& given to us by Jesus Christ to make sure that we never wander too far away from our Good Shepherd!
Peace,
Fr. Mike
