PARISH STAFF

What does it mean to be an active Catholic? Those seeking to celebrate Marriage, have children baptized, or have a letter signed to serve as sponsors for Confirmation or Baptism should be parishioners and active, practicing Catholics. To be considered active, one must have been registered in the parish for at least three months, attend Mass regularly, and be committed to a stewardship of time, talent, and treasure. We encourage all parishioners to become active in one of the parish organizations.

In a community as large as Our Lady of Hope, our most effective means of verifying active participation is through the use of parish offertory envelopes or electronic giving, such as Faith Direct. If you choose not to participate in the support of the parish, or are unable to contribute at this time, please note your prayerful support on your envelope and place it in the weekly offertory. We will then be aware of your continued participation, and you will not be noted as "inactive" on our parish roster.

PARISH INFORMATION

Baptism & Baptism Class: Baptisms are held on Sundays at 1:30 p.m. The baptism class for parents is held one Saturday a month at 11:00 a.m. Please call the Parish Secretary to pre-register for the next available class. Sacrament of Matrimony: In accordance with the regulations of the Bishop of Arlington, couples must contact a priest and begin preparation at least six months prior to the wedding. Parish registration and active participation for a minimum of three months is required before preparation may begin. Couples who are living together will be asked to live separately during the preparation time as living together before marriage is sinful and harmful to the future marriage.

First Communion: For Children: Generally, First Communion is received when a child is in second grade. Preparation for First Communion is a two year process, and students must complete both first and second grade classes before receiving Holy Communion. Please contact the Religious Education Office with questions. Sacramental Preparation for Adults (RCIA): Adults who wish to receive Baptism, First Communion, and/or Confirmation are invited to attend the Inquiry Class on Thursday evenings. Please contact the Parish Secretary or visit the website to register.

Sunday Mass If at all possible, assuming the Priest can make it to the church, regularly scheduled Mass will take place as sched-uled.

Please Note: The upper parking lot between the church and the school is supposed to be plowed first. When at-tending Mass during snow, please park on the upper lot first, so that the rest of the parking lot can be plowed ef-fectively.

Daily Mass When Loudoun County Schools are delayed or close be-cause of inclement weather, the 8:30 a.m. Mass will be cancelled.

Parish Office, Religious Education, and Parish Activities If Loudoun County Public Schools are closed for the day, close early, or cancel nighttime activities due to inclement weather (snow, ice, storm, etc.), then the Parish Office is closed. All parish activities, including Religious Education Classes, Eucharistic Adoration, and confession are can-celed and the building is closed.

Check the Cancellation Status Online The WTOP website is generally quick to post weather-related cancellations. Look for the Closings & Delays sec-tion. As mentioned above, Our Lady of Hope follows Loudoun County Public Schools.

Dear Parishioners of Our Lady of Hope,

I send each of you heartfelt and joyful greetings on our par-ish feast day! Although not on the calendar of the Church in the United States, today is the memorial of Our Lady of Hope. How blessed are we to honor our Blessed Mother with this special title.

The memorial derives from an apparition of Our Lady in Pontmain, France, which took place 150 years ago on this day during the Franco-Prussian war. The town of Pontmain was in danger of being overrun by the Prussian army. Our Lady appeared to a group of six children with the simple message, “But pray my children” and “my Son allows Himself to be moved with compassion.” Meanwhile, a crowd who had formed but could not see Our Lady nevertheless sang a hymn in praise. The hymn included the words, “Mother of Hope, of name so sweet, protect our country, pray for us, pray for us!” That very day, the Prussian army received or-ders to halt their advance, and ten days later an armistice was signed. The Blessed Mother’s intercession had saved the town.

Dear brothers and sisters, Our Lady of Hope continues to intercede for her children who have confidence in her. We live in an age that is in need of hope. Let us remember that all of us who have been baptized were given the theological virtue of hope. It is the virtue by which we firmly trust that God, who is all-powerful and faithful to his promises, will in his mercy give us eternal happiness and the means to obtain it. Hope inspires confidence in God and in his goodness, power, and fidelity – and compassion. This confidence sweetens and makes bearable the hardships of life.

My friends, every age has its challenges. Ours is not charac-terized by the threat of invasion, thanks be to God. However, we are challenged by the continuing scourge of the corona-virus pandemic as well as deep divisions in our nation’s poli-tics. How are we, members of Our Lady of Hope, to re-spond? We must listen to Our Lady’s exhortation: “Pray my children.” We must also grow in confidence in God’s love for us. As members of the Church, the body of Christ, our hope is rooted in the Gospel and its message of salvation. When we remember, each one of us, that we are beloved of God, then we have nothing to fear. But let us share our hope with others through mutual respect and charity. In this way, we honor our Blessed Mother and give glory to God.

Today is also the anniversary of the dedication of Our Church. Almost everything in this church was donated by parishioners – many of whom are still with us. May we renew our gratitude to all who had a part in building this beautiful house of worship. To all of you, I express deepest thanks together with an assurance of a remembrance in my pray-ers.

Sincerely yours in Christ,

Father Killian

There was a wedding at Cana in Galilee, and the mother of Je-

sus was there. Jesus and his disciples were also invited to the

wedding. When the wine ran short, the mother of Jesus said to

him, “They have no wine.” And Jesus said to her, “Woman, how

does your concern affect me? My hour has not yet come.” His mother said to the servers, “Do whatever he tells you.” Now

there were six stone water jars there for Jewish ceremonial

washings, each holding twenty to thirty gallons. Jesus told them,

“Fill the jars with water.” So they filled them to the brim. Then he

told them, “Draw some out now and take it to the headwaiter.”

So they took it. And when the headwaiter tasted the water that

had become wine, without knowing where it came from— alt-

hough the servers who had drawn the water knew —the head-waiter called the bridegroom and said to him, “Everyone serves

good wine first, and then when people have drunk freely, an

inferior one; but you have kept the good wine until now.” Jesus

did this as the beginning of his signs at Cana in Galilee and so

revealed his glory, and his disciples began to believe in him.

JOHN 2:1-11

Luke 1:46-55

R./ Hail, Virgin Mary, hope of God’s people.

RESPONSORIAL VERSE

Before all ages, in the beginning, God created me,

and through all ages I shall not cease to be.

In the holy tent I ministered before him,

and in Zion I fixed my abode.

Thus in the chosen city God has given me rest,

in Jerusalem is my domain.

I have struck root among the glorious people,

in the portion of the Lord, his heritage.

Come to me, all you that yearn for me,

and be filled with my fruits.

You will remember me as sweeter than honey, better to have than the honeycomb.

Whoever eats of me will hunger still,

whoever drinks of me will thirst for more;

whoever obeys me will not be put to shame,

whoever serves me will never fail.

SIRACH 24:9-12, 18-21

After Jesus had been taken up to heaven the apos-

tles returned to Jerusalem from the mount called

Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day’s

journey away.

When they entered the city they went to the upper

room where they were staying, Peter and John and

James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholo-

mew and Matthew, James son of Alphaeus, Simon

the Zealot, and Judas son of James. All these devot-

ed themselves with one accord to prayer, together

with some women, and Mary the mother of Jesus, and his brothers.

ACTS 1:12-14
