Dear Friends:
I n the middle of these cold temperatures we are not thinking of heat and humidity. How-ever, we know what it is like when it is very hot. We look for something cold to drink. I have no doubt that Jesus was tempted to give Himself food and water when He was enduring the desert heat. I have no doubt that in His agony He might also have thought about seizing power for Himself. These are the things that tempt us when we are worn out and beaten down. Lent begins with the temptation of Jesus. Like us in all things but sin, He knew about being and feeling deprived and weak. In our times of weakness, evil can find a foothold in our lives. At those moments we find in Jesus an example of how to resist temptation - pa-tiently, humbly, with trust in God’s promise of salvation. Yours in Christ,
Very Rev. Michael A. Carrano

LENTEN REFLECTIONS
As part of our parish Lenten offerings and East-er preparation, we will once again offer on the
Tuesdays of Lent, February 16, 23, March 1, 8 ~ after the 9:00 A.M. Mass and 7:00 P.M. films which will not only entertain but be a source of inspiration and conver-sation. Come and see, it will be a great time The Story of Father Damien ~ Based on a true story, this drama focuses on Father on Fr. Damien, a Roman Catholic priest from Belgium who takes up a post at a Hawaiian lepro-sy settlement. Appalled by the conditions that he finds the lepers living in, Damien works tirelessly to aid the stricken people. In addition to making the colony more habitable, Da-mien tries to act as a spiritual guide for the beleaguered is-landers, always selflessly putting the well-being of others first. Romero ~The life and work of Archbishop Oscar Romero who opposed, at great personal risk, the tyrannical repression in El Salvador. Entertaining Angels ~ The phrase “entertaining angels” re-fers to the practice of treating all guests- - be they kings or peasants -- as if they were visiting angels. This film captures much of the real - life drama that took place on big city streets, and of the very personal trials which eventually led her to convert to Roman Catholicism, and a dedication to helping the poor. This movie is the challenge for all humble Christians. Nine Days That Changed The World ~ is a very timely, must see, well-made, emotional documentary about Pope John Paul II’s historic, world-changing nine-day pilgrimage to Poland in June 1979. Everyone should see this documentary. All movies will be shown in the rectory meeting room. Please call the rectory at 718-429-5438 to reserve your seat!
