Dear Family,

“I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will not
enter the kingdom of heaven.”

How would you characterize a legitimate Christian? What boxes would he or she need to
“check” in order to live up to the title they bear? For some religious leaders in Jesus’ time, to be a
person of faith was to cover the basics of the law. The Pharisees followed all of the regulations to
a “T,” but Jesus saw that something was missing, the spirit of the law. As He continues His sermon
on the mount, Jesus makes it clear to all of us that he does not want simple rulefollowers as His
disciples. Instead, He wants us to incorporate the laws of God in our hearts and intentions so that
we may realize the full meaning of the law: to love fully. We would never want to be associated
with the likes of the Pharisees, but we must remain vigilant as it is always a temptation to do the
bare minimum without allowing our faith to take root in our heart. God wants all of us. So let us
pray that we may be always willing to put on the mind and heart of Christ so that others may see
Him reflected in us and nothing less.

In his joy, Fr Daniel
