I n Sunday's Gospel, the apostles ask, "Increase our faith".
Is one Sunday hour out of 168 hours in the week really enough to grow in faith? God loves you. God sees your actions every moment. God hears the prayers of the suffering and persecuted (the cries of the poor). God loves you and is calling you to spend more time with Him, to know Him, to recognize His voice when he guides you through your daily challenges. Like the Psalm response on Sunday, "If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts." To join a faith-sharing group, contact Nick Rawe at [email protected] or David da Rosa, MA, at 714-788-8648.

Unfortunately, politics in our country often can be a contest of powerful inter-ests, partisan attacks, sound bites, and media hype. The Church calls for a different kind of political engagement: one shaped by the moral convictions of well-formed consciences and focused on the dignity of every human being,
the pursuit of the common good, and the protection of the weak and the vulnerable. As Pope Francis reminds us, “Politics, though often denigrated, remains a lofty voca-tion and one of the highest forms of charity, inasmuch as it seeks the common good. . . . I beg the Lord to grant us more politicians who are genuinely disturbed by the state of society, the people, the lives of the poor!” (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 205). The Catholic call to faithful citizenship affirms the im-portance of political participation and insists that public service is a worthy vocation. As citizens, we should be guided more by our moral convictions than by our attach-ment to a political party or interest group. When neces-sary, our participation should help transform the party to which we belong; we should not let the party transform us in such a way that we neglect or deny fundamental moral truths or approve intrinsically evil acts. We are called to bring together our principles and our political choices, our values and our votes, to help build a civilization of truth and love. Reflections from the Gloria Dei Choir The 27th Sunday in Ordinary Time coincides this year with Rosh Hashanah, the cele-bration of the Jewish New Year, which begins at sunset tonight. Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur (the Day of Atonement) mark the chief celebrations of the Jewish High Holy Days. Today’s special music from the Gloria Dei Choir reflects our Hebrew heritage with the singing of Michael Isaacson’s “Sim Shalom.” The Sim Shalom is a traditional prayer for peace that is sung towards the end of the weekly Shabbat (Sabbath) service. I will sing the solo assigned to the hazzan (cantor) with my wife Neda conducting; the choir and I sing the text in the original Hebrew. Of this text, composer Samuel Adler wrote, “This text has a more universal connotation for me…it is intended to be a meditation on peace and on the ecstasy of the vision of all people living together in harmony:”
Sim shalom tovah uv’rachah, chein vachesed v’rachamim, aleinu v’al kol Yisrael amecha. Bar’cheinu, yotzreinu, kulanu k’echad b’or panecha, ki v’or panecha natata lanu, Adonai Eloheinu, Torat chayim v’ahavat chesed, utz’dakah uv’rachah v’rachamimv’chayim v’shalom. V’tov b’einecha l’vareich et am-cha Yisrael b’chol eit uv’chol shaah bish’lomecha. B’sefer cha-yim, b’rachah v’shalom, ufarnasah tovah, nizacheir v’nikateiv l’fanecha, anachnu v’chol amcha beit Yisrael, l’chayim tovim ul’shalom. Baruch atah, Adonai, oseih hashalom. Amein.
Grant peace, goodness and blessing, grace, kindness and mercy, to us and to all Your people Israel. Bless us, our Creator, all of us together, through the light of Your Presence. Truly through the light of Your Presence, Adonai our God, You gave us a Torah of life — the love of kindness, justice and blessing, mercy, life, and peace. May You see fit to bless Your people Israel at all times, at every hour, with Your peace. Inscribe us for life, blessing, peace, and prosperity, re-membering all Your people Israel for life and peace. Blessed are You, Adonai, Source of peace. Amen.
During Communion, the choir sings Felix Men-delsshon’s “Verleih uns Frieden,” also a prayer for peace from a Jewish composer (though Mendelssohn and his family converted to Christianity). Originally sung in Ger-man, the choir sings this piece in English translation. In order to continue to sing music of this exceptional quality, the Gloria Dei Choir needs for you to join our ranks. In recent years, the choir has experienced a signif-icant reduction in its numbers, especially amongst the men. This is making it difficult for us to meet the de-mands of the repertoire we present in worship. Voices of all types are welcome to join us Thursday nights from 7–9 p.m. and at the 9:30 a.m. Sunday Mass. Please feel free to contact me or to speak to a choir member for fur-ther information about how you can be of service to God's people through music ministry.
—Kevin St. Clair, Director, Gloria Dei Choir
From the California Catholic Bishops “In November , the concluding month of the Year of Mer-cy, Californians have the opportunity to embrace both justice and mercy (cf. Ps. 85 11) in their voting. We strongly urge all voters to prayerfully consider support for Proposition 62 and opposition to Proposition 66.” The Golden Rule also reminds us of our responsibility to protect and defend human life at every stage of its devel-opment . . . This conviction has led me from the beginning of my ministry to advocate at different levels the global abolition of the death penalty. I am convinced that this way is the best, since every life is sacred, every human person is endowed with an inalienable dignity, and socie-ty can only benefit from the rehabilitation of those convict-ed of crimes. —Pope Francis before US Congress, 2015
