From The Pastor

On Oct. 15, 2019, the U.S. Supreme Court declined to review the case of Caleigh Wood, a Maryland pub-lic high school student who, despite threats of receiving a failing grade, refused to deny her Christian faith by making a written profession of the Muslim conversion prayer known the “Shahada”: “There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah.” She was also forced to watch pro-Islamic PowerPoint slides. The presentation included the statements: “Most Muslim’s faith is stronger than the average Christian. Men are the manag-ers of the affairs of women. Righteous women are therefore obedient.” The school’s content specialist testified that use of such materials was inappropriate, and he would have advised the teacher not to use it. Yet the 4th Circuit Court of Appeals ruled the teaching did not violate the Establishment Clause. Richard Thompson of The Thomas More Law Center represented Caleigh in the federal lawsuit against LaPlata High School and commented on the Supreme Court’s refusal to hear the case: “I’m not aware of any public school which has forced Muslim students to write the Lord’s Prayer or John 3:16: ‘For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believe in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.’ Yet, under the pretext of teaching history or social studies, public schools across America are promoting Islam in ways that would never be tolerated for Christianity or any other religion. It’s disappointing that the Supreme Court did not clarify the test which courts should use when ruling on free speech challenges to public school classes on religion.” The legal question was whether La Plata High School violated the First Amendment’s Establishment and Free Speech Clauses when it gave Caleigh an assignment she was unable to complete without violating her reli-gious conscience. She believes it is a sin to profess the existence of any other god but the Christian God. School officials refused her father’s request that she be allowed to opt-out or be given an alternative assignment. She stood firm in her beliefs and refused to complete her anti-Christian assignment and received a failing grade. Thompson said, “Teaching Islam in schools has gone far beyond a history lesson. Prompted by zealous Islamic activism and emboldened by confusing court decisions, schools are bending over backwards to promote Islam while at the same time denigrating Christianity. Although the Supreme Court passed an opportunity to provide clearer guidance on this im-portant issue, there will be other chances as this issue isn’t going away.” In New Jersey, Chatham Middle School 7th graders were taught “Islam is the true faith.” They were re-quired to memorize the Muslim creed, learn the “5 Pillars of Islam” and watch videos to convert them. Globally, according to the organization “Open Doors”, Christians are the most persecuted religious group. From Nov. 1, 2017 to Oct. 31, 2018, over 245 million Christians live in places where they experience high levels of persecution; 4,305 Christians were killed for their faith; 1,847 churches and Christian buildings were attacked; and 3,150 Christians were detained without trial, arrested, sentenced or imprisoned. In the face of this great suffering, we must pray for persecuted Christians here and worldwide remem-bering the words of James 1:2-4, “Consider it all joy, my brothers, when you encounter various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. And let perseverance be perfect, so that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.” Despite persecution, God always cares for His people, and He will never leave or forsake Christians who suffer because of their faith in Christ.

Respect Life: “Miracle “Micro-Preemie” Born at 24 Weeks Goes Home”

Chris & Jessica Hill brought their “micro-preemie” son Finn home after more than 3 months in neona-tal intensive care at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando. A “micro-preemie” is a baby born weighing less than 1 lb., 12 oz., or before 26 weeks’ gestation. Baby Finn was born at 24 weeks and weighed only 1 lb., 2 oz. After her water broke unexpectedly, Jessica was rushed to the hospital and gave birth to Finn via emer-gency C-section. At Finn’s gestational age of 24 weeks, 66% - 80% of the babies born survive. He needed a special breathing machine. Jessica said, “His entire hand fit around my fingernail. We hold life so precious and to watch a premature baby fight for their life is extremely inspiring. We’re extremely blessed he survived.” Finn weighed 5 lb., 7 oz. when he came home. (LifeSiteNews.com; Sept. 24, 2019)

Pope Francis’ Message for World Food Day 2019

“The yearly celebration of World Food Day makes us hear the dramatic plea of those of our brothers and sisters who suffer from hunger and malnutrition. We are in fact witnessing how food is ceasing to be a means of sub-sistence and turning into an avenue of personal destruction. 820 million of the world’s people suffer from hun-ger, while almost 700 million are overweight. Due to poor nutrition, pathologies arise not only from the imbal-ance caused by “excess”, often resulting in diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other forms of degenerative diseases but also by “deficiency”; as documented by an increasing number of deaths from anorexia and bulimia.

“This reality calls for a conversion in our way of living and acting, and nutrition represents an important starting point. Nutritional disorders can only be combatted by the cultivation of lifestyles inspired by gratitude for the gifts we have received and the adoption of a spirit of temperance, moderation, abstinence, self-control and soli-darity. These virtues, which have accompanied the history of humanity, summon us to a more simple and sober life, and unfailing concern for the needs of those around us. By adopting such a lifestyle, we will grow in a fra-ternal solidarity that seeks the common good and avoids the individualism and egocentrism that serve only to generate hunger and social inequality.” Suffolk Advocate Schedule for Seniors needing assistance for Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Medicare Savings Program (MSP) and HEAP.

Each year, we ask members of our parish family to adopt families in need by donat-ing a complete Thanksgiving basket. These turkeys and baskets will be distributed on Sunday, November 24th.
