2016 ELECTIONS

The Presiden al General Elec on is already here.

“Some people question whether it is appropriate for the Church to play a role in political life. However, the obli-gation to teach about moral values that should shape our lives, including our public lives, is central to the mission given to the Church by Jesus Christ… The Catholic community brings important assets to the political dialogue about our nation’s future.” (U. S. Cath-olic Bishops)

Catholics are told to 'vote your conscience'. This doesn't mean 'vote for what makes you feel good' or 'vote for the candidate you like more'. It means that you need to have a well formed conscience that takes into account the Word of God and the sacred Tradi on and teachings of the Church. There are five current issues concern actions that are in-trinsically evil and must never be promoted by the law. Intrinsically evil actions are those that fundamentally con-flict with the moral law and can never be deliberately per-formed under any circumstances. It is a serious sin to de-liberately endorse or promote any of these actions, and no candidate who really wants to advance the common good will support any action contrary to the non-negotiable principles involved in these issues. They are abortion, eu-thanasia, embryonic stem cell research (not adult cell lines), human cloning, and homosexual marriage. Some things are always wrong, and no one may deliber-ately vote in favor of them. Citizens support these evils indirectly if they vote in favor of candidates who propose to advance them. Thus, to the greatest extent possible, Catholics must avoid voting for any candidate who intends to support programs or laws that are intrinsically evil. When all of the candidates endorse morally harmful poli-cies, citizens must vote in a way that will limit the harm likely to be done.

More in depth informa on on this topic can be found on h p://www.catholic.com/sites/default/files/voters_guide_for_serious_catholics.pdf

This year our parish hall is one of the official polling sta-ons and will be open on Elec on Day, November 8th be-

tween 7:00am and 8:00pm. Before you go to vote, you need to check on the back cov-er of the “Voter Informa on Pamphlet” you received some me ago to determine the loca on of your assigned polling sta on. Is it Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish Hall or some other place?

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION In the seventeenth century, English Catholics, many of them wealthy and well educated, looked to the American colonies as a place to regain a measure of religious freedom. In Ireland, the so-called penal laws were even harsher than in England, as a minority Parliament tried to force the conversion of the population by denying the majority politi-cal and economic power. Beginning in 1691, laws were passed that punished dissenters, principally Catholics, but also causing hardship for Jews, Quakers, and others. There were acts forbidding “mixed mar-riage” or sending children “beyond the seas” for schooling. Catholics were taxed at double the common rate, barred from the legal profes-sions and from university, and not allowed to build churches or own a decent horse. In 1793 the situation began to change, as it became clear that the economic persecution would not drive the majority away from Catholicism. Gradually, laws were repealed until by 1829 freedom was won, although Catholics at university were ineligible for honors, and until the 1920s and the Republic, the Church of Ireland was the state church, funded by the taxes of all citizens.

Our Lady of Good Counsel Church would like to invite you to participate in the pro-gram entitled “Divine Mercy Evangelization Program”. Its goal is to bring awareness to all the faithful of the value of the devotion to Divine Mercy. We wish to fulfill the desire of Jesus that He be known as King of Mercy before He comes as the just Judge in His final coming by means of bringing the Im-age of the Divine Mercy in every home. As

St. Pope John Paul II said “Divine Mercy is the only hope of mankind.”

Mechanics of the Program:

The Image of Divine Mercy stays in your home f eight (8) days.

The recipient will be given a handbook on how and what to do while the image is at their home. After eight (8) days, the family who have the Image will transfer the Image to the next recipient listed in the schedule, (the name, phone number and address will be given prior to transfer). NO serving of food or donation from recipient is required. Sign up sheet is available at our Church in the vesti-bule for those who wants to participate and want the Image of the Divine Mercy be brought to their home. You have enough time next year to prepare and welcome the Image into your home and chose a date when you want the Image to visit you. You will receive a reminder a week prior to the date you have chosen.

For further questions, please don’t hesitate to call Nellie Casanas at (510) 913-9777.
