SUPPORTING

“THE CATHOLIC VOICE”

The Catholic Voice is the official newspaper of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Oakland. As a public communication between bishop, clergy and laity of Alameda and Contra Costa counties, it shares in the Church’s mission to tell the good news of Jesus Christ in the context of today’s world. Its purpose is to help Catholics reach a clearer understanding of the Church’s mission in the world through objective reporting, insightful col-umns and comment, challenging editorials and emphasizing news about events in the local church community. By providing a forum for the exchange of views it can also foster lay participa-tion in the life of the Church. It seeks to do this by informing, educating and in-spiring its readers and inviting their response. By reflecting the great diversity within the local Cath-olic community it reinforces Christian respect for the dignity and human rights of all people. Next weekend, October 14-15, our second col-lection will be totally dedicated to The Catho-lic Voice. Even though this special collection is meant to cover 100% (about $2,500) of our parish annual support for The Voice, usually it helps to offset 30-35% only. Let’s make a significant differ-ence this year. We thank you in advance for your generous sup-port. Special envelopes are inserted in today’s bulletin for your convenience. Please make your check payable to OLGC with “The Catholic Voice” on the memo line. All registered members of our par-ish are entitled to a subscrip-tion to The Catholic Voice. If you are not receiving it and would like to, please contact our parish office or The Voice at 510-893-5339 or via email at [email protected].

Q. Remarriage and receiving sacraments after ex is deceased? I was confirmed in the church as a divorced person at the age of 50. I was a single mother of a ten year old at the time and could not afford an annulment. I did not initiate the divorce. Twenty years after my di-vorce I remarried which made me ineligible to partake in the sacraments. (This is a first time marriage for my current husband) This year my ex hus-band died. Since he is no longer living can I now take the sacraments?

A. In order to receive the sacraments you would need to have your marriage "blessed by the Church" which is called a validation. Its a relatively simple process.
