Our Lady of Fatima School Newsletter Our Vision
Our Lady of Fatima Palmyra is a Catholic School that aspires to provide a respectful, secure and caring learning environment where our community is committed to following the teachings of Jesus.
FROM THE PRINCIPAL
Dear Parents,
Easter is almost upon us. I continue to be amazed at how quickly time is moving,
it does not seem that long ago that we were welcoming everyone back for the
start of the new year, and next week is the beginning of April. It has been a very
busy term with the busyness of the classroom teaching and learning in the
classroom being complemented by a range of extra-curricula activities to provide
the children with a very full and well-rounded curriculum.
Harmony Day
As a school, we spent some time reflecting on a range of different cultures and
the multi-cultural nature of our society last Friday. The Year 3’s led us through
an interesting and informative assembly to begin our day, followed by our
Harmony Day parade on the grassed area at the front of our school. The children
also enjoyed the Sausage Sizzle as a whole school lunch as a special part of our
celebration for the day. Huge thanks to the ladies on our P&F who facilitated the
Sausage Sizzle for the children and the staff.
Holy Week
The children have been preparing for the Easter season by participating in some
Holy Week reflections this week. Our Year 1’s and 2’s re-enacted Palm Sunday
for us and this morning the Year 3’s and 4’s led the focus by re-enacting the Last
Supper before we move into the Stations of the Cross with our Year 5’s and 6’s
this morning. The Year 5’s and 6’s drew a parallel between the Stations of the
Cross and how that translates to every day life for all of us. This time of the year
it is very important that the children in our community reflect on the Easter Story
and that there is an appropriate balance between the Easter Story and the more
commercial Easter messages portrayed this time of the year.
Easter Egg Raffle
This afternoon, we came together as a school community to draw the Easter
Raffle Prizes. It is always a real highlight for the children and a great way for the
children to celebrate the Easter long weekend. Thanks again to a group of parents
who have coordinated all the prizes which were drawn today and thank you also
to all the families for the small donation made so that these prizes were available
for the children. The gold coin donation from each child will go towards Caritas,
a Catholic Support Agency we like to support this time of the year.
Caritas
Speaking of Caritas, we have had a group of Year 4 girls coordinate a special
fundraiser for Caritas by making Jelly Cups and selling them at lunch time over
the past couple of days. Congratulations to Shaia, Ellie, Kendall and Eve for their
generosity in providing a treat for children from Years 2-6. The Jelly Cups were
sold for 50c each and the girls raised $63. We added this to the money raised at
our recent whole school sausage sizzle, thanks to our P&F, which will also go to
Caritas, a focus that we incorporate in our Lenten season.

From the Principal—(Continued) Parent Teacher Interviews (PP-6)
We will have our annual Parent Teacher interviews at the end of Term 1. The interviews are held at this time
to focus the discussion around how each child has settled into the new routines and structures within the
classroom setting since the start of the year. A number of parents and classroom teachers have already initi-
ated meetings to discuss children’s progress and testing results to address how individual’s are progressing
academically and socially. If you are one of these parents, you may not need to have another meeting on the
scheduled afternoon of Tuesday 10th April.
To facilitate the meetings, the school will close at 12 noon, before the meetings start at 12:30pm and
continue until 5:30pm. If you would like to utilise the Camp Australia Programme, please let them know
before the Easter long weekend. Again, they require a minimum of 18 to run the Programme.
It is crucial that parents and teachers adhere to the 10 minute time frame, to ensure the timetable runs on
time throughout the afternoon. Our support teachers and specialist teachers will also be available for
interviews throughout the afternoon.
Parents will be provided with access to a link to book a time for their interview/s immediately after the
Easter long weekend. The families with more than one child at our school will be sent the information on
Wednesday 4th April, to enable them to schedule meetings with different teachers and 24 hours later, the
same information will be provided to the families with one child in the school. Our hope is that all the
interviews will be booked by the end of next week in preparation for the Parent Teacher Interviews on
Tuesday 10th April.
Open Afternoon (PP-6)
The following day, Wednesday 11th April, we have an Open Afternoon where parents are invited to come
into the classrooms where their children can take them on a “tour” of the room and show the parents some
work that they are very proud of. This afternoon is not designed for parents to have any in depth conversa-
tions with teachers, that was the focus the previous afternoon, this is more about the children explaining
some of their learning to their parents and/or grandparents.
Our Swimming Programme
Our School Swimming Carnival held a week and a half ago was an event where our children in Years 4-6
were able to challenge themselves in a competitive environment which had an emphasis on participation.
The rate of participation was fantastic and the standard of swimming throughout the school was very strong
which is a credit to the parents in the community for fostering the value of children being able to swim
strongly and vigilantly supporting their children to develop this important life skill. Our Interschool
Swimming Team has been announced and they completed their last training session last Tuesday morning
before the Interschool Swimming Carnival next Friday 6th April. Come and join us at the carnival at
Fremantle Pool if you are able to, it should be a great event. My thanks again to Oz Celenza for coordinating
the programme and all the parents who assisted us at training, providing breakfast and at our school carnival,
particularly Rebecca Dreverman for her valuable assistance and expertise.
Problem Solving/Creative Thinking
As you may remember from my Parent Information Night Presentation a couple of months ago, the
development of the children’s problem solving and creative thinking skills is a defined curriculum focus for
us. I am enjoying facilitating some maths extension classes for a group of very capable children in Years 3
and 4 and at the same time, we have been adding another teacher to Years 5 and 6 and allowing those 2 clas-
ses to be split between 3 teachers to reduce the number of children in each group to enable problem solving
strategies to be explicitly taught.
From the Principal—(Continued)
We also have the director of Opti-Minds WA here at our school on Thursday 5th April working with a group
of 25 children in Years 5 and 6 between 9am and 12noon. Opti-Minds WA is an organisation that teaches
children how to think “outside the square” in a very creative and lateral thinking manner. These are the types
of skills that will hold children in good stead, as they grow up in an ever-changing world. Also related to this
focus is the development of our Robotics Programme where all the children from Years 4-6 will spend time
immersed in the Programme. Our Year 6 class is currently working through a Robotics Programme which
will conclude at the end of Term 2, before the Year 5’s spend Term 3 in the programme and the Year 4’s
will get their turn in Term 4.

A Note from the Community Health Nurse
Welcome to the new school year. My name is Judy Sullivan and I am the Community Health Nurse who visits your school. Community Health Nurses work in schools to promote healthy development and wellbeing so students may reach their full potential. A major part of my work is focused on early intervention and the School Entry Health Assessment program. Community Health Nurses serve as a health contact point for children and their families, providing infor-mation, assessment, health counselling and referral. The services provided are free and confidential. If you have a concern about your child’s health or development, please contact me via your school office or at my Community Health Base on 9314 0100. Communicable Diseases and Immunisations We have been notified of current cases of chicken pox in WA Primary Schools. This is a timely reminder to ensure your child’s immunisations are up to date. Maintaining a high level of immunisation within our community is very important to control the spread of communicable diseases and to keep everyone well, especially those who are most at risk such as; babies, pregnant mothers, the elderly and those who are unwell or immunocompromised. Your child can have their 4 year old / Kindy age immunisations from 3 ½ years of age. If your child has missed any of their vaccinations or is old enough to receive their next booster vaccines please visit your Doctor or Immunisation clinic to enhance their protection from communicable diseases such as chicken pox. If your child becomes unwell please consult your Doctor. Parents/Guardians Year 6 Students A Health Information letter, Scoliosis and Colour Blindness Pamphlet has been distributed to Year 6 students. Please see below information and look out for the brochures as now is the time to follow up on this important information. Scoliosis Scoliosis is an abnormal sideways curvature of the spine. It can be detected by a simple examination of the back.
The normal spine has three curves – one in the neck, one in the upper back and one in the lower back. These curves can be seen from the side, but when you look from behind the spine should appear straight. If the spine has a sideways curve, this is scoliosis.
An information leaflet about Scoliosis has been distributed to all Year 6 students. Please read through the information provided and check your child for scoliosis as described in the leaflet.
If you have any concerns, please contact your General Practitioner.
Colour Blindness
Colour blindness means that a person cannot distinguish some colours or see the colours differently to other people. Very few people who are colour blind are ‘blind’ to all colours. Commonly, the colours seen differently are greens, yellows, oranges and reds.
An information leaflet on colour blindness has been distributed to all Year 6 students.
For more information and see the Colour Blind Awareness and Support Group on
http://www.members.optusnet.com.au/~doverton/
If you have any concerns, colour vision testing can be performed by some General Practitioners, Eye specialists or Optometrists.
