INFANT BAPTISMS For children under 7 years of age, the sacrament is celebrated the FIRST Sunday of the month at 2:00 pm. The parents must register in the parish office at least 4 weeks prior to the baptism. Both parents and godparents are expected to attend one catechetical session in advance, on the Wednesday before the baptism, at 7:00 pm.

SACRAMENTS OF CHRISTIAN INITIATION Before being fully initiated into the sacramental life of the Church, children over the age of 7 will need catechetical prepa-ration through the RCIC process. Teenagers and adults will par-ticipate in separate RCIA processes. CONFIRMATION and COMMUNION For those already baptized, preparation for these Sacraments will take place according to the person’s age and knowledge of the Catholic Faith. For further information contact the Office of Faith Formation Program.

MARRIAGES Couples should contact the parish office at least six months in advance to make the proper ar rangements for the Sacrament of Matrimony.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK

Dear Parishioners, I enjoy the summer months. It is a time when you can open up your windows, go outside and see God’s creation flourishing. We only have three months of summer and the first full month of summer is ending this week. The ra-pidly passing season that I like makes me feel like Philip and Andrew in our gospel today who looked at the appetite of the large crowd and thought they did not have enough to satisfy their hunger. The response we have to the li-mitations we find in life is in the scriptures to-day. Jesus is enough for us. The lesson that Philip and Andrew learned when they obeyed Jesus and distributed the five barley loaves and two fish to feed so many, was a lesson I learned as well begin-ning on May 19th. I had the responsibility to provide an experience in parish life for the se-minarian sent to us from St. John XXIII Semi-nary. The formation of a future priest is so im-portant. There are so many parts of develop-ment that need attention in order to help a se-minarian prepare to serve the many needs of the people that they will be sent to as priests. It seemed to me that ten weeks was a very long time and I would run out of things to show El-vin Torres, our seminarian. I am happy to say that after speaking with Elvin, he has found these ten weeks to be an experience that was more than expected. The lesson that I learned was from his good attitu-de. Elvin was open and willing to let Jesus work in the different experiences that he had. It is not how much we have that is important but that we let Jesus use what we have to mul-tiply his blessings in life. Jesus used you the parishioners of Our Lady of Fatima to show Elvin his powerful presence in parish life. Thank you for being people of faith. Let us continue to share our faith in and outside our parish. Let us also pray for Elvin as he conti-nues his preparation to be a priest for Christ.

DEL ESCRITORIO DEL PARROCO

Queridos Feligreses: Disfruto los meses de verano. Es un momento en que puedes abrir tus ventanas, salir y ver flo-recer la creación de Dios. Tenemos solo tres meses de verano y el primer mes de verano ya termina esta semana. La temporada que me gusta pasa rápido y me hace sentir como Felipe y Andrés en el evangelio de hoy que vieron el apetito de la gran multitud y pensaron que no tenían lo suficiente para satisfacer su hambre. La respuesta que tenemos a las limitaciones que encontramos en la vida están en las escritu-ras de hoy. Jesús es suficiente para nosotros. La lección que Felipe y Andrés aprendieron cu-ando obedecieron a Jesús y distribuyeron los cinco panes de cebada y dos pescados para alimentar a tantos, fue una lección que aprendí también comenzando el 19 de mayo. Tuve la responsabilidad de proporcionar una experiencia en la vida parroquial al seminarista que nos en-viarón desde el Seminario de San. Juan XXIII. La formación de un futuro sacerdote es tan im-portante. Hay tantas partes del desarrollo que necesitan atención para ayudar a un seminarista a prepararse para servir las muchas necesida- des de las personas a las cuales se les enviará como sacerdotes para servir. Me pareció que diez semanas era mucho tiempo y me quedaría sin cosas para mostrarle a Elvin Torres, nuestro seminarista. Me complace decirles que después de hablar con Elvin, el descubrió que estas diez semanas fueron una experiencia más de lo esperado. La lección que aprendí fue de su buena actitud. Elvin estaba abierto y dispuesto a dejar que Jesús trabajara en las diferentes experiencias que tuvo. No es tanto lo que tenemos que es importante sino que le permitimos a Jesús usar lo que tenemos para multiplicar sus bendiciones en la vida. Jesús los usó a ustedes los feligreses de Nuestra Señora de Fátima para mostrarle a Elvin su poderosa presencia en la vida parroqui-al. Gracias por ser personas de fe. Continuemos compartiendo nuestra fe dentro y fuera de nues-tra parroquia. Oremos también por Elvin mien-tras continúa su preparación para ser un sacer-dote para Cristo.

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION

Last Wednesday, the greatest pilgrimage in our tradition ended with the feast of Saint James at his shrine in Compostela, Spain. Every year, as many as a hundred thousand persons walk a portion of the medieval way of the pilgrim, earning the right to wear the scallop shell symbol of this journey of faith. In legend, this city on the northern coast of Spain is the final resting place of the apostle, and the full name of the cathedral is “Saint James of the Field of Stars.” There is a tradition that Saint James the Great preached there.

In the Roman Catholic tradition, the pilgrimage, like any procession, is a symbol, life’s jour-ney distilled, a powerful sign of our journey toward a certain goal. The perils of the road, the sup-port of companions, the contemplative slower pace of life, have the potential to transform and re-new the pilgrims in ways that last a lifetime. Along the way, the distinctions between rich and poor fall away, and everyone shares humble rustic food and stops for the night in hostels or under the stars. After a long walk, the experience of entering through the great doors into the vast cathedral filled with incense, light, and song is a foretaste of heaven. The pilgrims often say that their whole lives are redirected toward that moment of entry into the heavenly Jerusalem. The most memorable feature of the cathedral is called the botofumeiro, an incense burner on pulleys and chains that sweeps through the cathedral in immense circles, swirling clouds of sweet-smelling incense around the vast nave.

TRADICIONES DE NUESTRA FE

El día 2 de agosto es la fiesta de Santa María de los Ángeles, patrona de Costa Rica y de los franciscanos. En 1635 la mestiza Juana Pereira descubrió una pequeña imagen de María con el Niño Dios. Varias veces la imagen se le perdió y regresaba al sitio donde la había encontrado el día 2 de agosto. Por esta razón el lugar a donde regresaba se convirtió en su santuario y se le dio el título de Nuestra Señora de los Ángeles en honor de la capilla dedicada a Santa María de los Ángeles afuera del pueblito de Asís en Italia.

Esta capillita reconocida como la Porciúncula (pedacito de tierra) fue restaurada por san Francisco. Allí nació la familia franciscana y Francisco insistió que los frailes nunca abando-naran ese lugar porque era consagrado a Dios. Allí María y los ángeles alababan a Dios cuando los seres humanos habían dejado de hacerlo.

Según parece, la imagen costarricense también insistió en quedarse en un pedacito de tie-rra consagrado a Dios donde sus hijos e hijas pueden recurrir a ella y adorar al Dios eterno.
