SAINTS & FEASTS FOR THE WEEK …

Monday Saints Cosmas & Damian

They were brothers from Syria. Cosmas and Damian were mar-tyred during the persecution of Diocletian. Their names appear in the Roman Canon.

Tuesday Saint Vincent de Paul (1581-1660) St Vincent was born in France. He was a priest who dedicated himself to the evangelisation of the poor, the unfortu-nate, and the suffering. Together with Louis de Marillac, he founded the congregation of the Daughters of Charity. He also founded the Congregation of Priests of the Mission, known as Lazarists. His life remained deeply rooted in humility despite his worldwide fame.

Wednesday Saint Wenceslaw or of

Saints Lawrence Ruiz and

Companions

(907-930) St Wenceslaw was Duke of Bohemia. He assumed the leadership of his country in the year 925. After many trials in governing and evangelising his people, he suffered martyrdom at the hands of his brother. In the 17th century, Lorenzo Ruiz and his companions shed their blood for Christ in Nagasaki, Japan. These martys were members of the Order of Saint Dominic. There were 9 priests, 2 religious, 2 sisters, and 3 laymen. Among the latter was Lorenzo Ruiz, a family man from the Philippines. They abundantly sowed the seed of Christianity with the example of their life and faith.

Thursday Feast of Saint Michael, Gabriel

and Raphael, Archangels

Friday Saint Jerome

(340-420) St Jerome was born in Dalmatia (present day Croatia)He studied in Rome where he was baptised. He chose monastic life, and went to Syria where he was ordained a priest. He went back to Rome as secretary to Pope Damasus, who commissioned him to revise the Latin text of the Bible. He went to Bethlehem to work on this project. His work is known as the Vulgate which the Church has adopted as the official version. He also wrote many other works, mostly commentaries on the books of the Bible.

Saturday Saint Therese of the Child Jesus

St Teresa was born at Alencon, France in the year 1873. She personally petitioned the Holy See to enter the Carmelite monas-tery at Lisieux while still a teenager. She was outstanding for her humility, simplicity and confidence in God. She offered her life for the salvation of souls and for the Church. She died in 1897. She is the patron saint of France and the Missions.
